The leitmotif that underscores the ‘hug-gate’ scene is a slight variation of the musical figure that appears in some form or another throughout the series, most notably as Han Solo and Princess Leia first kiss while on board the Millennium Falcon in The Empire Strikes Back. The track itself is titled 'Han and Leia’ because it is the principal musical figure that signifies their ongoing romance in both episodes V and VI. But everything changes when Leia and Rey meet. In this moment, the presence of the leitmotif creates what we might call 'a disturbance in the force.’ It becomes unmoored from its original pairing (i.e., the Leia/Han romance) and associates itself with an entirely new referent (the mysterious bond between Leia and Rey). In the first and perhaps most obvious sense, the leitmotif that plays during the Leia-Rey hug functions in a purely semiotic or linguistic manner, It clearly implicates Rey in Leia and Han’s romantic relationship, and thus holds out the possibility that she may very well be their child (i.e., the product of their love). Second, by detaching from what was formerly a strict adherence to Han and Leia, the leitmotif identifies Leia and Rey as central to the workings of the Force. They are the protagonists, the real heroines of the story. After all, most of the men have either gone missing (Luke), or been murdered (Han), or turned to the dark side (Ben). Thus, the music makes the somewhat progressive suggestion that the entire fate of the galaxy hinges upon these two women.
