I swear, why does everyone and their mother think a live-action adaptation of an animated series is a good idea? Almost every time they adapt an animated series to live-action for the sake of a movie, it suffers.
The Last Airbender, Death Note, Dragon Ball: Evolution, Ghost in the Shell, the Garfield movies, the live-action Scooby Doo movies, and so many more were all complete flops, because they refused to stay faithful to the original, and as such lost all the appeal of the originals. Or because they were horribly executed, with awful actors and directing.
Now, there have been ones done very right, such as Space Jam, some Superhero movies, and the TMNT movies; that’s because these series stay faithful to the originals, and as such retain the same audience and appeal as the originals.
Rugrats is ultimately a wacky look at the daily lives of infants, and as such has some promise; the TV show had actual plots (unlike Garfield), and they’re using CGI instead of child actors (unlike The Last Airbender); we’ll see whether they’re going to make another The Rugrats Movie (with a very dark plot, and not much humor or fantasy), another Rugrats in Paris (with plenty of humor and fantasy against a background of darker themes), another Rugrats Go Wild (a mediocre film with neither darker themes nor decent humor), or just a complete pile of garbage.
