Richie only ever told "I fucked your mom" jokes to Eddie as his shield - which really translated to "I'm in love with you."

Eddie's final words to Richie are "Hey Richie...I fucked your mom..."

In true poetic cinema fashion, Eddie is also saying "I'm in love with you" since we have established that every time Richie made one of those jokes, he was really saying that he was in love with Eddie.
