❛ well , i hardly serve as a fitting example . ❜ he expressed himself quietly in light of joshua's praise . people often perceived perfection in others through their feats , their acts of heroism even , when they themselves served as the very foundation allowing such divine miracles to transpire ; clive approached his loved one & leaned 'pon one of many wood railings in the hideaway , reminiscing on their past together & joshua's constant turmoil on feeling as if his value were lesser.

they have always been on equal terms he'd have liked to believe but . . . not anymore , such a verdict had certainly been buried in the past . joshua had grown into a fine man , one whose lofty ideals carried hope & burdens perhaps far too heavy for his benevolent shoulders at times. ❛ listen to me , joshua , ❜ our outlaw's sharp yet weary gaze burrowed into the phoenix's image , never growing tired of his mesmerizing countenance.

❛ you have come far on your own . fought countless battles & saved many without my aid , i am proud of you . ❜ clive bestowed a tender & genuine smile , all whilst reaching over with an open palm in order to deliver a gentle squeeze to the phoenix's shoulder . ❛ when this is all over , you & I shall have a lot of things to catch up with , that is a promise. ❜ a promise in order to patch up the ache of his failure in his duties as both brother & first shield to the flame.

as much an arduous journey it may have been , joshua's new shield truly felt home at long last . ❛ what are you doing here? ❜ he expressed as the heart became swollen with a profound sense of joy . lordling or not , clive's dutybound soul sought to give rosaria's upcoming lord a fierce embrace with more love than any other feeling .

it mattered little what prying eyes cared to witness , or what gossip would soon brew within the towering castle walls for they were together again ; clive playfully ran each finger 'pon joshua's auburn kissed locks , birthing a momentary mess which magically fixed itself when left alone . ❛ you shouldn't be dressed so lightly outdoors , it won't do good for your health. ❜

an eternity could come to pass & not a moment would ever feel dull , much was ascertained , for the longer clive remained influenced by joshua's infectious happiness , the wider his grin became . ❛ well , you are here now . is mother aware of your whereabouts? there are many tales from my travels that i want to share with you . ❜ thus our proud shield raised from his seat whilst ever so carefully aiding the beaming phoenix up too .

clever was he whose keen eyes sought their surroundings , finding naught but careless postmen who paid little heed to possible mischief these two would probably commit into , all that remained was for joshua to agree .

𝐉𝐎𝐒𝐇𝐔𝐀 𝐒𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐒 𝐔𝐏 𝐀𝐓 𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑. he has a gust of butterflies in his chest, but dutiful words of responsibility do not come. he'd spent weeks confined in the castle, trying to disregard own selfish thoughts in order to learn & refine all necessary teachings, but now that he's facing clive again, joshua realizes how standing here, together, camouflaged by the shadows of the great apple tree, he is simply unable to forget about the other half of his soul.

❝ the light of dawn has not reached mother yet, ❞ so he smiles a little wider, giving a warm, sincere gaze that wishes to explore everything, to understand everything. ❝ will you... share them with me? please? ❞ the gentle hands come to cradle clive's gloved one, squeezing tight, almost, pleading; ❝ if you grant me this one wish, i promise i will not skip any of my meal today. ❞

a subtle barter, yet one that cannot be helped. clive's presence is like a spark, rekindling those silly childish hopes & dreams which one day will disappear, but that day is not today, & joshua isn't ready to let them go just yet.

sweet as honey , joshua's tender voice rekindled his burdened heart . to be able to see him move once anew , hear him breathe freely past those rosey parted lips , these were motives enough to summon a rather loving contour from our warrior's expression . ❛ thank the founder , i feared the worst . . . ❜ unusual as the embrace might have been , the phoenix felt a fair level of struggle 'till he'd been able to pry free , even then clive sought only to assist.

❛ come , take my hand for we have much ground to cover still . ❜ his hand clad in plate revealed its soft palm wrapped in leather , an offer kindly given in order to help his phoenix raise up to his feet . not long to go 'till they were to reach the hideaway where tarja's salves could tend to any stubborn aches . what joshua failed to see , or perceive despite their victorious conclusion , was that perhaps his perilous journey was at long last closely to an end ; on that dreary moment , unheard by any , clive made a quiet vow to bring him harm no more .

𝐒𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐓 𝐄𝐍𝐕𝐄𝐋𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐌 𝐈𝐍 𝐀 𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐀𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐒𝐋𝐎𝐖𝐋𝐘 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐔𝐈𝐍𝐒. the sandstorm is finally receding, now barely an echo of hot wind. joshua wishes to retract & carry own weight, but clive's steely eyes & firm hold say otherwise. therefore they stroll together, walking through the boundless mounds of sand, not daring to turn their thoughts into words until they reach the oasis where their chocobos are stationed.... or rather, just one.

joshua stops for a moment, his sapphire eyes glimpsing at the harsh scenery around. ❝ where's.... the other? ❞ muttering in a low, clearly baffled tone, the young archduke looks back at the snow-white chocobo & then at clive. the firmness of his hold seemingly diminishing with every bad news they take, but that's expected, considering everything they've endured on this long, perilous journey, making joshua's resolve burn all the brighter. ❝ there are fresh imprints in the sand, ❞ so he points out, giving a subtle glint of hope in shape of a nod towards that general direction; ❝ if we make haste, perhaps we can still find it before the winds best us. what say you, brother? ❞

𝐀𝐒 𝐋𝐔𝐋𝐔 𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐃, 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇𝐃𝐔𝐊𝐄 𝐒𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐒 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐋𝐘 & 𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒 𝐈𝐓. his touch is lukewarm, appreciative, & his pale face has a delicate, chiseled look that comes from having grown up in a doll-like world. even his regal attire is nothing short of exquisite, much like those found in old stately novels, yet the expression itself couldn't be anymore sincere; missing that certain air of noble arrogance.

❝ the honor is all mine, my lady, ❞ joshua murmurs, & slowly leans to place a chaste kiss at the back of her hand. a brief brush of lips against tender flesh, followed by an equally tender pull as the archduke guides lulu through the moving crowd, slipping by the sea of twirling dresses & busy servants. he does not halt within their busy spotlight. in fact, he just keeps moving until the music hushes to a mere lullaby, & the blue shadows of night envelop them like a cashmere veil, at long last, entering a moonlit balcony.

joshua gracefully steps to its center, & turning around, looks back at lulu with that same, ardent smile. ❝ do forgive my pluck, but i simply could not help but notice your discontent, & truth to be told, soirées were never much to my taste either. ❞ he chuckles, ❝ shall we? ❞

stepping closer, closing the already small distance between them, the archduke takes lulu by the waist & with their hands intertwined, begins to sway along to the distant melody of violins ──── the pale light of the moon being the only witness to their slow, private dance.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐌𝐒𝐎𝐍 𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐃𝐀𝐖𝐍 ──── like a burning flame ──── had always seemed to joshua like one of those precious things in life for which was worth living another day. when he first opened the window, instead of a sigh, the little prince couldn't help but to become lost in its warm, heavenly glow. he'd stay like that for a while, just watching the sun slowly rise over the horizon of stone walls & iron banners, only to lower his sapphire gaze onto the lavish garden down below. much to joshua's surprise, however, instead of shadows, he saw only clive sitting beneath a tree.

he cannot tell when it happened, or how he even managed to pass by all the guards, but the little prince finds himself now running through the long castle halls, the petite feet tapping as quietly as those of a mouse; the sickness withheld by a mere thread. it's all so terribly foolish, so terribly, terribly irresponsible & reckless, yet joshua for once doesn't care. he slams his delicate hands into the last wooden door & pushes it open, just to run down the marbled steps & straight towards clive.... wearing nothing more than a snowy nightshirt.

it flows like a white river as he quickly approaches, nigh tackling the older sibling from the sudden impact. ❝ my brother ! ❞ he exclaims, smiling oh so brightly within the hug; ❝ you're finally back... ! ❞ squeezing clive tight, the little prince simply refuses to pull away. after all, it's been a whole month since they last saw each other, but even more so in his radiant heart.

once again, he had failed him. once again, he had allowed harm to blemish the phoenix's blinding flames, and each passing breath became almost too laborious to inhale due to the crushing guilt ruminating unchecked. as the aftermath of a prolonged battle left naught but ruin behind, clive desperately rushed amidst its chaotic atmosphere and crumbling wreckage.

there he was. bruised, marred, left to dream if simply for a moment. clive wasted no time on mannerisms, he dashed with reckless abandon. weary knees crashed at joshua's side, whilst loving arms cradled his head protectively, instinctively — desperately fearing the worst.

❝ are you alright, joshua?! ❞ his voice called out in anguish, each word warned to crack. if fate were to be so kind, clive would swear 'pon its benevolence that no harm would ever dare to befall his beloved brother ever again.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐘 𝐒𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐎𝐅 𝐅𝐎𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐏𝐒 𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐄𝐒 𝐇𝐈𝐌. they are quick, loud, & heavy, like raging thunder surging along the earth. joshua opens his tired eyes & sees needles of golden light filtering through the cracks within a broken ceiling, only for darkness to suddenly swoop in & overlap everything in sight. he coughs a little just then, becoming partially suffocated by the rather constricting cage of arms but, that's alright. he doesn't mind. in fact, the younger prince cracks a smile & slowly, ever so slowly reaching around, returns the ever-loving embrace.

❝ c-clive... i... ❞ he whispers, patting the older sibling 'pon the back, ❝ i'm so glad... you are safe. ❞ a moment of silence passes, followed by a gentle squeeze & equally gentle push, albeit somewhat quivering now. after all, as much as joshua would love nothing more than reconcile, laughing & rejoicing over their fleeting moment of victory... he'd also appreciate some air.
