Can't stop thinking about how much trouble custas and tartah are in
Like, custas isnt a Brimmed Cap really- he played the role when it was just him and ininia but that was
A). When he had an actual goal to achieve
B). When he wasnt catatonic with grief
C). When he didnt know he was hosting a life-threatening parasite
From custas' perspective he has once again been betrayed by people who claimed they wanted to help him, once again witches have lied to him; he is going to absolutely lose his mind
From the perspective of the Brimmed Caps... restys has brought them a new silverwood experiment. They are not going to treat him as an equal, as a member of the team. he will be lucky if they treat him as a person
And then there is tartah
Tartah who made an impulsive decision (an understandable one! but still!) and barely has a plan for his next steps
let's not forget, tartah still doesn't know magic! nolnoa mentioned still looking for a master to learn from at silver eve!
he knows how to distill water and reconstitute powders but... as far as we know that's it! and i highly doubt the Brimmed Caps are going to let him run around, grabbing arms and asking questions with his truth seal
at best, they'll treat him as a curiosity and agree to teach him some forbidden spells but like?? he is completely defenceless against powerful adults who have no reason to not hurt him
what will be interesting is maybe getting more of an insight into the Brimmed Cap organisation now that the two of them are there
it seems pretty loosey-goosey structurally, is iguin the defacto leader? or is this more a like-minded individuals meeting up for casual coffee and child torture?
either way
^ kids that are NOT going to be okay ^
Maybe if I explain it more and better and more and better, people will finally understand and just stop
So hey, you know sentiments like "There's no platonic/straight explanation for this", "Ugh they're dating and they don't even realize it", "They're too close to just be friends", "Obviously A is in love with B, look at all the things A does for B"?
What do they all have in common?
That's right, every single one of them says that there's a strict limit to non-romantic relationships and if you go over that limit, it's automatically romantic.
"There's no platonic/straight explanation for this" = "This is beyond the limit of what a platonic or otherwise non-romantic bond can be. They can't be straight, because they are exhibiting a kind of closeness that must be romantic and they're the same gender."
"Ugh they're dating and they don't even realize it" = "The way they are acting is beyond the bounds of a non-romantic relationship, so it has to be romantic no matter how they view it"
"They're too close to just be friends" = "There is a limit to how close friends can be and they've moved beyond it"
"Obviously A is in love with B, look at all the things A does for B" = "Nobody would do these things for somebody they are not in love with, there's a limit to what people would do for somebody they don't have romantic feelings for"
So let's follow that idea to its logical conclusion, shall we?
If there's a strict limit to how close and intimate non-romantic relationships can be, if there's a limit to the depth of non-romantic feelings, then that puts a limit on what people who don't get into romantic relationships and don't catch romantic feelings can experience.
"There's no platonic/straight explanation for this" = "This is beyond the limit of what a platonic or otherwise non-romantic bond can be. They can't be straight, because they are exhibiting a kind of closeness that must be romantic and they're the same gender" = "You are incapable of ever having this close of a bond"
"Ugh they're dating and they don't even realize it" = "The way they are acting is beyond the bounds of a non-romantic relationship, so it has to be romantic no matter how they view it" = "Your relationships can never be this intimate"
"They're too close to just be friends" = "There is a limit to how close friends can be and they've moved beyond it" = "You will never have this kind of closeness with another person"
"Obviously A is in love with B, look at all the things A does for B" = "Nobody would do these things for somebody they are not in love with, there's a limit to what people would do for somebody they don't have romantic feelings for" = "You would never go to such lengths for someone. You are incapable of the depth of feeling that would require."
All of it says "Your relationships and feelings are inherently shallower than other people's because they are not romantic in nature".
Do you understand how incredibly fucked up that is? How dehumanizing?
susie both hates sans and thinks sans is fucking funny lol
loved the very specific fuckery with "gendered" terms this chapter
reminder that gendered terms should be fucked with as often as possible and aren't cages you need to lock yourself or anyone else in
In the tale of Beren and Luthien parallels Frodo is Beren and Sam is Luthien
BUT despite Beren being Orpheus and Luthien being Erydice, in the parallels with the myth Sam is Orpheus and Frodo is Eurydice. Does it make sense to anyone but me.
I wish it wasn’t a hot take that a story in which two characters of any gender prioritize their purely platonic relationship over any other romantic or sexual interests they might have is a textually queer story
Please stop foreshadowing I think we get it
John stop chasing after women you just met and just appreciate the deep emotional relationships you already have challenge
On the topic of Tartah being one of the funniest characters in WHA-- When Coco is in the hospital in the early manga, he tells her he "doesn't really draw".
Now, Coco not drawing much in the past? Valid
But Tartah, you actively wanted to be a witch??? and you haven't tried drawing much?? you make wands on your freetime and you don't??? draw??? much??? And yes, when we meet Tartah he's withdrawn, to himself, hopeless... but if you still have that desire to learn magic, you didn't put the effort into the skill? And yes, he does make his slyph shoes and begins studying soon after (without a master mind you so he really could have been just practicing or studying before because Tartah can also be a bit stubborn (not a Lot stubborn but a little-)) and yes this is lowkey a callout post on Tartah you little Shit but its Also a post about passion.
Tartah grew up with the belief he'd never become a witch, yes, but he also grew up with the support of his grandpa and all the tools at his disposal should he use them. The fact that he takes to medicinal needs more and actively pursues that with more interest (imo) than magic shows he was never going to be satisfied or happy as a witch as they are (pacthoes).
I don't know, seeing that scene again from the anime made me pause cuz like... what do you mean son? it makes me remember how blinded we can be when led to believe in one certainty/one path, so much so that it's our Identity before we even become it, but then if say silverwash eyes come into play? You've already lost who you were and who you'd become. In a way, I think that arc is just Tartah believing he can be something again/believe in himself, and it really had little to do with his love of magic even if he did start learning it afterward. NOT SAYING HE WONT CONTINUE TO LEARN MAGIC but I will say its not his passion and is something he Thinks he should do. Idk. The vibes of this child make me chuckle like a rich man at a golf course, politely clapping and saying "oh yes, oh how swell"
I've always interpreted Tartah saying he "doesn't really draw" as him avoiding those parts of being a witch due to how inaccessible it felt.
Even if you do have the passion for something, being told your "not good at it" or that you can't become good at it, like Tartah was, can really kill your motivation to even try. Even if he has the supplies, the passion and the ability to draw, if it's already been hammered into him by the adults in his life that his silverwash will keep him from being a good witch, then what's the point of even trying? Why put in the effort to practice if it's never going to amount to anything? He'd be better off spending his time doing things that he's been taught that he can do well, like carving pens.
👀
This is a take I actually didn't see-- You put in your tags that this interpretation could be from personal experience with similar feelings: I also based mine on personal struggles and it's so interesting how we both drew completely different conclusions ! Human experience and sharing is a gift aaa.
I genuinely didn't even consider he'd just Not do it if it mattered to him. When passion calls, no matter how fruitless the endeavor or how "useful/good" it might be, I just figured it was second instinct? Like it might depress you, beat you down, remind you of what you can't do, but in the end you'll keep going back to it and doing it anyways because even if others don't see it, it's you?
I'm not suggesting I disagree tho, I love your idea but Im also like processing this thought wave and its delicious haha suffer little boy >:D
I need to go sit in a quiet room for now because genuinely was ruminating the past day like "dude how would he not be drawing regardless of Insert Here". I need to dip into a new perspective. Thank you!
Imagine Tartah using his carving knife to cut Custas' apples back at the hospital because they made his friend happy. Custas also rates them and how they taste based on how nice they turn out (he never scores them below an 8).
also I don't know if ive seen anyone else point this out yet but. during the hot spring scene, there is a very conspicuous moment where Ralsei's makeup is depicted running/washing off.
