I've reached the age at which #FamilySkateNight really means Jo stands around talking to some little boy on the outside of the rink while saying "Mother! Stop dancing, you're embarrassing me!" As I skate/dance for 2.5 straight hours, and Xan sits punished pretending to play arcade games. I usually keep the professional stuff away from all autumnanniase properties, but the 2016 #HBCUMediaWeek schedule has been released. A little hard to read, but you can do it. A number of folks on the timeline will be sharing their expertise as panelists, and since there are so many HBCU alumni and supporters on my personal networks, wanted to share with you all here as well. The best thing about what I do is that it instills such a premium value on education in my children. When your mom writes about higher Ed for a living, you're constantly exposed to the idea of college and college culture. Not only that, but mom gets all of the first-hand info on pipeline issues so you, in theory, have a leg up (tbd). Plus, people give you college swag items when you're sick and have to tag along with mom for the day. #HeCheersForLSUButHesMorehouseBound lol
To be completely honest, pretty much everyone and everything around me is excellent. Because I was raised to associate with excellence. So I struggled with what to post today. If you know me, you had no doubt who was coming up for the "MJ" post on Day 23. If you know me well, you know I've waited all month to grace your timelines with Michael Jeffrey Jordan. "MJ's story is a black power story, not the black power of protest and politics, but the black power of economics." -- Roland Lazenby, author of "Michael Jordan: The Life." Only black principal/majority owner of an NBA team. First Black superstar athlete in the modern era. A man who, as CEO of the Jordan Brand and as owner of the Charlotte Hornets, has been dedicated to promoting the advancement of other Black business leaders. AND the best to ever do it. All of it. Day 21: Books. So, we're pretty big readers in our house. This is just a quick smattering of titles I gathered in a quick sweep -- plus four titles in my current queue. (Both of my children also have books where a little Black boy and older Black girl, respectively, run for president.) Representation matters. How can your children be what they can't see? Malcolm X dropped out of school when a teacher told him niggers couldn't practice law. (today is the anniversary of his assassination and I've been working on a school project about him with Jo all day). One ("Blood Brothers") was not written by a Black author. But one ("Baby Bison's First Homecoming") was illustrated by my brother. #yebiespc #blackhistorymonth #representationmatters

Day 20: "Bob." This was random, @yebies. But I went with Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. Because baseball is my paramour and the work this particular Bob is putting in to preserve the contributions of African-Americans to my second favorite sport should be recognized. #blackhistorymonth #yebiespc @hhbcunines @nlbmprez
Day 19: Children (and dad). I could've done something on the children's civil rights movements. And I could've posted on the dozens of children slain, by police officers or otherwise. But I'm posting my children. Because soon enough, they'll be a critical part of making Black History happen. #yebiespc #blackhistorymonth #XanJo
Day 18: President. Bishop Daniel Payne is the first Black president of an American university. He led Wilberforce University, the first institution owned and operated by African-Americans. (Lincoln was the first school created FOR black people, but Wilberforce was the first school for Blacks actually run by Blacks.) #hbcu #yebiespc #blackhistorymonth
Day 17: Faith. People now seem to conflate "faith" with positive thinking. Like "believe and you shall receive." But that's not really how it works, you know? There's got to be some substance. When we're singing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us (y'all are singing the song right? At least in February? You know all the verses? Lol), it is having faith that God will keep us and see us through. Like he has done for our people for generations, centuries. When you call yourself having faith that God will send you a husband or a car or your dream home, you are trivializing Him. Oh, and also, Faith without works is dead (James 2:20). Day 16: Heroes. My Popi (and some cute little girl with a bad attitude). I was going to do a pic stitch that combined my Popi with my two dads. I decided to go with just Popi, because of what he has meant to generations of people at this point. But in reality, all three of them should be up here. For being the backbones of the family, for setting a positive example of what a man should be, for offering guidance and unconditional love through their quiet strength. For stepping up and being there when my world could have easily otherwise crumbled. The three of them made me who I am. And For Popi, that sentiment extends to lots of other people through the generations. The patriarch of our family in a world in which many families are now headed by women. #yebiespc #blackhistorymonth
Day 15: Power. Election season is upon us and I thought It'd be appropriate to use today to talk about the power of voting. You know how we know it's powerful? Because throughout the entire history of this country -- from slavery's recording Blacks as 3/5 human and thus ineligible to vote to poll taxes and other deterrents during Jim Crow to today's voter ID laws -- efforts have been made to keep Black people in this country from exercising their voting power. We are watching candidates pander for Black votes daily. A generation or two ago, we saw people being killed for registering Blacks to vote around the country. Know your value. Exercise your power, right, responsibility to vote. And not just in presidential elections 🙃. #yebiespc #blackhistorymonth
