Most often associated with the infamous League of Assassins and their leader, infamous semi immortal ecoterrorist Ras Al Ghul and his clan. Lazarus Pits are mysterious pools of thick, bright green and glowing liquid with the seemingly miraculous ability to raise the dead. Or at least rejuvenate and revivify those who are close to death's door. Though at the cost that the time spent in the pit healing one's maladies is directly linked to a period of violent insanity that follows AND that the pools become less effective each time the same individual uses the same pit. It is the functional ingredient that has kept Al Ghul and his kin vital and active over lifespans that measure somewhere in the centuries.
They seem most often to congregate at intersections along the Earth's leylines in placing lacking prolonged human construction, most often in the world's highest and harshest mountain ranges. The most well attributed pools existing in lonely mountain caves in the Alps and the Himalayas although none of that is conclusively proven and may just be a pattern of where those using the pools like to set up shop rather than ironclad evidence of a natural factor of their occurance.
As for what they ARE...that's a tough one

The actual materials of the Lazarus Pits have never been scientifically studied, though not for lack of trying. As you can imagine the ability to return vitality to the mortally injured or lethally sick has been one of the great goals of human endeavor basically since human beings became self aware enough to recognize death ahead of time. The fact is that the pits are rare and well monopolized by Al Ghul and a few scant other semi-immortals who have had lifetimes to make sure they are secreted away and under guard. We're only aware of them as more than whispers and myth in the modern day because Ras Al Ghul and men like him have been dragged into the light by their conflicts with Batman and other heroes.
The scientific hypothesis, one of many at least, posits that the Lazarus Pits are most likely an alien material (dubbed, tentatively, as Dionesium) that were brought to Earth in the distant past by a heavy meteor shower. The main proponent of this theory, pop historian Scott Snyder also theorizes that this Dionesium might have been that material contained within the meteorite that granted immortality to Vandal Savage. Though how believable you find that is going to depend on what you think of Snyder's work and lord knows that I've been critical in the past.
This Dionesium would be the functional chemical within the pits able to return some energy to damaged cells or biological systems. While the temporary insanity after the fact could be explained as a side effect, like the loss of mental cohesion that comes from a strong cold medicine. And the fact that the Pits become less effective the more often a single person uses a single Pit is exactly the way most other medications or chemicals work. The body builds up an immunity to its effects as the user's personal biochemistry becomes used to its presence.

Gwen: The fact that the Pits seem to collect along Earth's leylines and in isolated, natural spaces far from regular human habitation is in line with the general behavior of wild magic. The returning of a human body from death or near death, unlike you would expect of magic, is MUCH harder than it sounds. Healing magic is a very deep bank of knowledge and people can, have and will dedicate CENTURIES just to be able to use it effectively. There is no over the counter potion that will cure your case of the deaths, if there was more wizards would be using it.
The scuttlebutt *I* have heard is that the Lazarus Pits are upward drippings from the Underworld, whatever evil aligned afterlife you would associate that with. A demonic essence of some hellish realm able to leak through our world and therefore pervert and reverse the age and decay that are so integral to nature's grand design. It would explain how the pits are able to overcome the power requirements of returning someone to life from near death if their power was literally infernal, the insanity caused by the aftereffects of the bath matches up with what we know sometimes happens when you make the VERY poor choice of re-delivering a soul to its body from Places Beyond, and the fact that the pits stop working for people over time is EXACTLY how the forces of darkness like to play these things.
String free immortality is NOT a deal that Those Below are willing to give, basically ever. What they will do most often is offer a pretense of vitality that is either fleeting or comes with some terrible price attached. It's how they collect from you. By making you dependent on the pits for immortality and then slowly making it work less and less they are setting someone up to get desperate, coincidentally RIGHT as an agent for the Darker Powers shows up at your doorstep with a deal you might be interested in. Until we get a scientific (and sorcerous) research team to do a deep dive on one of the god forsaken things there's no perfectly logical diagram I can show you of what a Lazarus Pit IS or what it isn't. and so long as Ras Al Ghul and his League of Assassins continue to be some of the most wanted men and women on the planet by normal law enforcement and superheroes alike that doesn't seem to be in the cards.

I'd suggest that the human habitation of Gotham is anything but regular.
I'd also like to point out that huge swaths of the northeastern US aren't actually natural. Significant portions of Boston and Manhattan are built on land that was created via landfills and bringing in material from somewhere else. I'm not familiar with Gotham's geographical history, so I can't say whether it also has some kind of feature like this, but it's possible the site was disturbed in some way that would negate the whole "near humans" thing.
Ive heard something to that effect over the years. Yes, though rarely outright. Usually its more of: a place with this many dark(magically speaking) deals, outright curses, and other similar occurences simply has to be extra cursed or that wouldnt happen.

Unfortunately the question of Gotham being cursed or not is a bit of a chicken and egg problem.
Bruce Wayne is a multibillionaire who keeps actively trying to not be a multibillionaire and like, actually paying his taxes and stuff. Maybe the universe can't figure out how to handle a billionaire who isn't totally fucking evil and had a stroke that resulted in a Gotham Lazarus Pit.
...you know, that started as a joke, but I do kind of have to wonder if him going so far out of the way of expected billionaire behavior does have some effect on everything.
The only reason Bruce Wayne campaigns for higher taxes on the 1% is because he'd be able to offload the bureaucracy of getting rid of as much of his money as possible to the federal government.
The true irony here is that he absolutely has enough money to buy all the politicians necessary to make that happen and not even feel it in his pocket, but he's either too dumb or too honest or both to actually do it.

Gotham is a series of islands off the coast of Jersey. They are VERY rocky with an intricate series of tunnels underneath the landscape that crisscross basically the entire area. It's why the city is so TALL because building OUTWARD is too much of a pain when even most of the Gotham side of the channel is standing on a tunnel network that goes down for miles.
So "could be who knows how far below the surface" could be an answer after all. Not that I'd imagine anyone should go looking, that's the kind of place that will kill you even without supernatural intervention.

I can't remember where I read it last week, but the person discussed how when we think of chattel slavery in the US, we tend to think of massive plantations of cotton or tobacco, with one very rich white master or mistress with lots of land and lots of enslaved people. But we very rarely think of the many families that had just one or two slaves, in smaller homes.
Because it's not like you had to pay them, so once your family owned someone, they owned them and their descendants indefinitely. Could you pay and eventually free em- sure! You could also send them anywhere you want for any labor you want, could have an enslaved woman bred for more children, or maybe save up and buy new slaves and sell the old. Like cattle (thus, chattel slavery).
So it's interesting that many people go "oh well it's not like my family owned slaves!" Because like, one, how do you know that? Have you ever actually asked your grandmas about their grandmas? How many of your family members grew up with mammies? Have you ever asked? I wonder how many people have actually done the digging for the truth (or was it easier to just benefit). Because I've talked to my grandma, who picked cotton in the sea islands. She had to have been doing that for someone in the 1930s and 40s!
And two, it's easy to think that because your family (or someone else's) didn't own sprawling stolen land and generational blood money like a plantation owner, that it wasn't as important. But... It was. That was still someone's entire life. That was a person, whose labor benefitted and saved a family money that could be used in other ventures. How often do we think of them?

I've been using Google as my main mail service since 2006, and every single account or service I've ever signed up for was made with that address. For a long time I thought it'd be impossible to divorce myself from Google.
It took less than 5 minutes to switch to a ProtonMail account, less than 2 hours to download and/or offload every byte of data from my Google account, and less than 3 days to change every single account or service I've ever signed up for to the new address.
As of today, the only single one I have that's still tied to it is YouTube. It's the only thing I'd lose access to if I deleted my Google acount entirely.
They really, really want you to believe that it's a hassle to switch to a different email system. But it's not. Most websites and/or services allow you to change the email address associated with it.
I've been using Google for almost 2 decades and it only took a few days to move everything. It's not a painful sacrifice; it's an easy change that, frankly, has absolutely been worth it.
You can and should switch to a free, encrypted Proton email account. You also get all of the below perks. For free. There is no trick. It is paid for by the people with paying plans. I am one of them. The (completely functional) free tier is there to entice you into getting a paid account with even more perks. (It worked on me.) But there's no penalty or pressure for staying with the free account.
Also get your stuff off the google drive and put it on Proton's drive. It is encrypted. Only you with your password can access it. Not even Proton can see what you put in there.

But... Stochastic Parrots.
Timnit Gebru was fired from Google in December 2020 for refusing to retract a research paper, and every single warning that paper made about large language models has now happened at a scale the industry spent 4 years trying to make people forget about.
Her name is Timnit Gebru.
She co-led the Ethical AI team at Google. She co-wrote a paper called "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots" with Emily Bender at the University of Washington and two other researchers. The paper was 14 pages long. It was submitted to a top AI ethics conference. And it was the reason Google decided that one of the most senior Black women in AI research could no longer work there.
The story Google told publicly was that she resigned. The story she told, confirmed by 2,695 of her colleagues in an open letter, was that she was fired by email while on vacation because she refused to either retract the paper or remove her name from it.
The paper had not even been published yet.
Here is what she actually wrote, and why every prediction inside it has now come true.
The first warning was about scale itself. Bender and Gebru argued that training ever-larger models on ever-larger scrapes of the internet would produce systems that appeared fluent but had no actual understanding of language. They called these systems stochastic parrots because they would repeat patterns from training data with statistical confidence and zero comprehension. The paper predicted that this apparent intelligence would fool both users and developers into trusting outputs that were structurally incapable of being reliable.
This was 2020. GPT-3 had just come out. The paper predicted the hallucination problem before anyone had a word for it.
The second warning was about bias amplification. The paper documented in detail that internet-scale training data contains systematic overrepresentation of dominant viewpoints and underrepresentation of marginalized ones. The models would not just absorb this bias. They would amplify it, because the optimization process rewards confident outputs, and confidence in language patterns tracks frequency in the training set.
The prediction was that hiring tools built on these models would discriminate against women. That healthcare triage tools would underperform on Black patients. That loan approval systems would entrench inequality while presenting their decisions as neutral algorithmic judgment.
Every one of those things has now been documented in deployment.
Amazon's hiring algorithm penalized resumes that contained the word "women" in any context. Healthcare risk scoring algorithms used by major US hospitals were found to systematically underestimate the medical needs of Black patients. Apple Card's credit algorithm gave wives credit lines 10x lower than their husbands for the same financial profile.
The third warning was about environmental cost. The paper calculated that training a single large language model produced emissions equivalent to the lifetime output of 5 cars. The prediction was that the race to scale would create an environmental footprint that would eventually rival entire industries.
In 2024, Google's emissions were up 48% from 2019, and the company explicitly blamed AI infrastructure. Microsoft's were up 29%, same reason. Both companies have now quietly abandoned the climate commitments they were publicly celebrating the year Gebru was fired.
The fourth warning was about documentation. The paper argued that the training datasets being assembled were too large for anyone to actually audit. Nobody at Google, OpenAI, Meta, or any other lab could tell you with confidence what was in the data their models were trained on. This was not a temporary problem to be solved later. It was a permanent feature of the approach.
In 2023, researchers discovered that the LAION-5B dataset, used to train Stable Diffusion and other major image models, contained thousands of images of child sexual abuse material. The companies that had trained on the dataset had no way of knowing. The paper predicted that category of failure 3 years before it was found.
The fifth warning was the one Google cared about most.
Bender and Gebru argued that the deployment of these systems would centralize linguistic and cultural power in the hands of the small number of companies that could afford to train them. The internet would become a place where the dominant voice was a statistical average of dominant voices, presented as a neutral assistant. Languages underrepresented in the training data would degrade over time as more web content was generated by these systems and fed back into the next training run.
This is now happening in real time. A 2024 study found that 57% of new web content in English is AI-generated or AI-assisted. Researchers studying low-resource languages have documented active degradation in translation quality, because the synthetic content fed back into training is itself worse in those languages.
The paper Google fired her for predicted the model collapse problem before model collapse had a name.
The mechanism behind why this all happened is the part of her work that nobody quotes.
Gebru's argument was not that AI is dangerous in some abstract sci-fi sense. Her argument was that AI is dangerous in a very specific structural sense. The technology was being built by a small group of researchers who shared similar backgrounds, worked at similar companies, and were rewarded for shipping products faster than competitors. The incentive structure made it impossible for safety, ethics, and bias concerns to slow anything down. Anyone inside the system who raised those concerns was either ignored, sidelined, or removed.
She was making that argument from inside Google.
Then Google proved her right by removing her.
The team Google had built to make sure their AI was safe was dismantled in 90 days because they did the job they had been hired to do. Margaret Mitchell, the other co-lead of the Ethical AI team, was fired two months after Gebru for searching through her own emails for evidence of how Gebru had been treated.
Gebru did not stop. She founded DAIR, the Distributed AI Research Institute, in 2021. The mission is to do AI research outside the control of the companies that have a financial interest in not hearing the answers.
Every prediction in the Stochastic Parrots paper has now been validated by deployment. Hallucinations are an industry-wide problem the largest labs cannot solve. Bias amplification has been documented in hiring, healthcare, lending, and criminal justice. Environmental costs are larger than entire small countries. Training data audits remain impossible. Model collapse is an active research crisis at every major lab.
The question worth sitting with is the one almost no one in the industry will say out loud.
Every researcher with the technical credibility to call out these problems watched what happened to her in December 2020 and made a calculation about their own career. The number of people willing to speak publicly about safety and ethics issues inside the major AI labs collapsed after that firing and has not recovered.
The researcher Google fired for warning about exactly what is now happening was right.
The company that fired her is now the second-largest deployer of the technology she warned about.
And the people inside that company who agree with her are not allowed to say so.

Yes, fascism is something to absolutely oppose. But there is always a question you must ask yourself-âAm I opposing fascists because I really want to hurt someone and be justified for it or am I opposing fascists because I care about Jewish people, Roma people and others considered undesirable?â
You HAVE to care about other people or youâre just going to be a hammer looking for a nail and it is so *very* easy to convince supposed antifascists to harm Jewish people and others if said the âcorrectâ way.
