Aster chooses a hysterectomy to get out of a eugenic breeding program, and crossdresses to gain more freedom of movement. Theo’s non-manhood and obsessive pursuit of ‘goodness’ are connected. they each, very badly, want to meet each other on neutral ground, without an unwanted power dynamic between them, whether it is gendered or racialized.
