the moment between lightning and thunder
happy belated birthday to my stupid babel sons robin and ramy :’)
really is bizarre the way fandoms largely do not like women at ALL. it’s been happening for ages but when you see people straight up just hating on women characters more often now (+ the general rise in misogyny) and then you come on here and everyone’s just pretending women don’t even EXIST in any media ever. it’s like that’s not much better. fandom isn’t activism but it does reveal people’s internal biases. like women being excluded, sidelined and erased in everythingggg. people will take characteristics that are compelling in a female character and give it to a man in fan content just so they don’t have to engage with a woman ever. fics, fan art, ships, etc. a hollywood produced movie/tv show won’t even sideline a woman as much as the average fandom blogger will
friendships end. relationships end. fictional man whos doing even worse than you is forever
You are a fan of internationally-acclaimed K-pop group Huntrix. They drop a new single to wild success and its debut performance is canceled without clear explanation. Huntrix's management says something about a medical condition with the lead singer.
At the same time a new boyband debuts with a song that tops all the charts. The boyband doesn't seem to have a management company. Or names. Maybe that doesn't matter because their sound IS catchy. Huntrix is completely out of the public eye except for two appearances alongside this new boyband where they are there exclusively to beef. It's maybe a PR stunt. It's maybe because Rumi is exes with one of the only two named members of the Saja Boys.
People start going missing at a rate 4x the national average. You probably wouldn't even know about this except that 3 of the missing people were big names on Stan Twitter so it's kind of a big deal. There are four different high-traction posts claiming all the recent missing people were Saja Boy fans. But that's like claiming all the recent missing people drank water and breathed air.
Rumi is still on medical leave but Huntrix management is saying Huntrix WILL be at the K-pop Awards. Someone on Twitter's uncle's friend works in a recording studio and he says Huntrix is debuting a song which tells the Saja Boys to die. The exes theory gets a lot of traction. Twitter tries to doxx Jinu to confirm the theory but no one can figure out who he is. Twitter tries to doxx the other Saja Boys to the same lack of success. One account said she had "a lead" but her Twitter has been silent for 72 hours since.
Rumi is back from medical leave for the K-pop Awards just in time to have a massive falling-out and break-up on stage. This probably devastated you but you don't really remember it. The Saja Boys invite everyone to a concert. A lot of people who went don't remember going, and you'd call that suspicious except you also went and don't remember going.
Somehow no one in the crowd of 10,000 thought to record the concert on their phone. Maybe there was a "no phones" rule but usually there are still leaks. No one has any video or photo evidence of this concert happening. However you all collectively remember hearing "What It Sounds Like" at the concert (before it debuted 4 days later from Huntrix's label.) This does not make a lot of sense because this was a Saja Boys concert, supposedly. Someone says they saw Zoey impale at least one of the Saja Boys. You would brush this off as a stupid rumor but 2-dozen other people are saying the same thing and you a little bit remember it too.
There's a lot of people saying "Let's wait for an official statement from the Saja Boys" on Twitter but they've been saying that for 2 weeks now and no one has seen or heard from them since the concert. There's a lot of people saying "Zoey killed them fr" which was a joke at first and now, is not not a joke, but it hits a little different.
Most of you are kinda over SB Twitter at this point so you kind of don't care anymore but there are a few remaining fans who've doubled down on the doxxing effort to figure out if they're okay. It's not going well. One person claims to have found Jinu's identity but everyone thinks she's stupid because that guy died literally 400 years ago. YES the royal court's painting of him looks identical and yes that guy was a singer too, but come on, the K-pop look is 90% make-up anyway.
I think a good takeaway here's that you can read as much and cite as many sources and speak on all the political topics you want but if you can't answer the basic question of "should we care that people are dying" without some variation of "it's complicated" that's what's gonna show how much merit your perspective on anything has. Same goes for how much that bothers you.

“Do it scared” “do it badly” it’s time to drop the guide for do it alone
Doing it scared and doing it badly is one thing, but no one seems to talk about doing it alone. When you feel so isolated from your friends and your family but you have shit to do and you have to get it done no matter what. When your support system really is only you. For any myriad of reasons. We do not talk enough about doing it alone.
I don’t think I can stress enough how many people on here need a hobby like 95% of what people refer to as jobless behavior is actually just hobbyless behavior. Take up watercolors or tabletop or join a hiking group or something you probably won’t feel as much of an incessant need to freak out on the internet every day
Sketchin’ Starfire
Reading DC comics from back in the day and having other characters casually call up Oracle on the regular when they needed information is just making me sad man. Barbara Gordon used to be at the center of the goddamn universe. She used to be the go-to gal for everybody in the cape and cowl community. She was the glue that held the world together. The freaking JSA went to her whenever they were in a jam for christ's sake. Now what the hell does she have? She lost just as much as Cass and Stephanie did in the N52 if we're being honest.
Do you ever think about Doggerland?
Like how fucked up is it that it’s just….. gone.
I tend to forget about it and then when I remember it again I’m like “Oh yeah! There’s like an entire country sized stretch of land that’s just fucking GONE.
well…. “gone”….
Things I have learned since making this post;
The running theory (I can’t remember if it was definitive proof or not but I try not to make concrete statements on history any more) is that what caused the sinking of Doggerland was not the slow heating up of the Earth leading to a gradual melting of ice and snow causing the rise of the ocean….
What flooded Doggerland was a massive fucking CHUNK of Norway FELL INTO THE OCEAN and it caused the largest tsunami we have physical evidence for on earth and it fucking flooded Doggerland IN ONE SINGULAR DAY with a rush of water so strong, large and powerful it literally had the force to rip people to shreds when it hit them
Doggerland on Wikipedia
I do think about Doggerland, fairly frequently! And I feel it’s important to point out that its disappearance absolutely was because of “the slow heating up of the Earth leading to a gradual melting of ice and snow causing the rise of the ocean”. By the time of the tsunami, the land area would already have been reduced to a handful of small islands.
In general, a true tsunami (caused by displaced water) is never going to permanently submerge an area of land, because the water displacement is temporary and it will return to where it came from (causing huge damage on the way, of course). However, with islands that were already barely above sea-level, it’s definitely possible that such a huge inundation just obliterated their topsoil and left them below water level.
It’s hard to say, though, because the end of the last Ice Age was a wild time for water moving around and getting into places it shouldn’t. In particular, as the glaciers melted you’d often get huge meltwater lakes forming behind dams of ice and rubble which might then burst, suddenly dumping nearly inconceivable amounts of water all over the downstream terrain. One of these bodies of water, Lake Agassiz in North America, was so huge that it covered multiple states, and it’s thought that it drained very suddenly into the Atlantic ocean about 8000 years ago (i.e. contemporary with the flooding of Doggerland), dumping so much water into the ocean that global sea levels rose 1-2m over the course of a couple of years.
And if you’re wondering - yes, it’s theorised that this event, or the combination of the others like it, was responsible for the flood myths that exist in so many cultures. Coastal and lowland settlements around the world would have found themselves in a period of time where the sea just kept rising - not overnight, but inexorably and seemingly without any end in sight. Many, many cultures would have retreated to higher ground, only to find a few months later that the water was once more lapping at their doors. In some ways I find that even more profoundly terrifying than the idea of a wall of water sweeping everything away.
Has everyone seen xkcd Time?
You should probably see xkcd Time

xkcd Time - at your own pace
That’s not the only case!
That region had tropical climate, even at the peak of the last glaciation. There could have been a thriving agricultural civilization in those bygone river valleys 10,000 years before it started all over again in the Near East, and we wouldn’t know.
Oh, dude, the amount of outburst floods that happened at the end of or during the Pleistocene is OBSCENE. The Altai Floods, which created giant ripple currents like sixty feet tall. The Black Sea Deluge Hypothesis, which could explain the lack of Paleolithic sites on Turkey’s northern coast because they all drowned. The Missoula Floods. The Missoula Floods. Floods with the height of skyscrapers that would hit you like a truck going down the highway. Floods that were 50x more river flow than the Amazon and happened in an area 38x smaller. Floods that happened SO often and were SO strong that they literally created the Channeled Scablands and is partially why the area isn’t very forested because all the topsoil got scrubbed away.
And don’t even get me started on the Zanclean Flood, because WOW
Someone else might have already mentioned Some Facts About Doggerland, a piece of writing that gives me huge emotions every time I read it, but if not please enjoy!
To fellow Doggerland fans, I also want to shout out Julia Blackburn’s Time Songs: Journeys in Search of a Submerged Land.
In honor of this post coming back around on my dashboard, here are more maps of Doggerland through the ages, from Barry Cunliffe’s Europe Between the Oceans.

Re: xkcd Time mentioned above: xkcd 1190 was a story that updated with a new frame first every 30 minutes and then every hour for over 120 days back in 2013. For people who can’t or don’t want to log into GitLab (which is where the provided link above sends you), explainxkcd has the full comic as a gif animation as well a plot summary and links to other resources, if you want to check it out.
Explain xkcd is a wiki dedicated to explaining the webcomic xkcd. Go figure.
This site lets you play the full comic and allows you to pause on whatever frame you want, which can make for an easier viewing experience than the very fast-moving gif.

Dunno how to put it properly into words but lately I find myself thinking more about that particular innocence of fairy tales, for lack of better word. Where a traveller in the middle of a field comes across an old woman with a scythe who is very clearly Death, but he treats her as any other auntie from the village. Or meeting a strange green-skinned man by the lake and sharing your loaf of bread with him when he asks because even though he's clearly not human, your mother's last words before you left home were to be kind to everyone. Where the old man in the forest rewards you for your help with nothing but a dove feather, and when you accept even such a seemingly useless reward with gratitude, on your way home you learn that it's turned to solid gold. Where supernatural beings never harm a person directly and every action against humans is a test of character, and every supernatural punishment is the result of a person bringing on their own demise through their own actions they could have avoided had they changed their ways. Where the hero wins for no other reason than that they were a good person. I don't have the braincells to describe this better right now but I wish modern fairy tales did this more instead of trying to be fantasy action movies.
"In [fairy tales], power is rarely the right tool for survival anyway. Rather the powerless thrive on alliances, often in the form of reciprocated acts of kindness - from beehives that were not raided, birds that were not killed but set free or fed, old women who were saluted with respect. Kindness sown among the meek is harvested in crisis."
