Emet-Selch could have so easily be just another Dead Wife Guy, but they made the extremely good decision to make what he’s mourning not a person but a civilization. The easier and more obvious route would have been to, say, have his moment of keen nostalgia and homesickness be brought on by seeing some reminder of Dead Wife: instead, it comes from seeing a bunch of people work together on a municipal project. This is a weary, bitter man who could be moved by a well-organized chore wheel, and I love that for him.
