Did you know that giving a damn is deeply exhausting?

Even more so when you have severe chronic health problems? (I was assassinated by a comedy-actor, among other more present issues.)

I’m damn tired, and lucky that I’m grown immune to suicidal ideation and the sensation of impending doom/angor animi, as both have been present for 20+ months.

They’re not absent. I just do not let them dictate the course of my actions. It’s just, however, deeply exhausting to dedicate so much of one’s emotional and mental energy discarding the piled up thoughts from a pitching machine that launches at a million miles an hour a “you’re dying this very second,” at you every half second, pursued by a follow-up launch of “you should speed that process up so you’re free of your problems sooner,” 24/7, for nearly two years.

ok im going to #seriouspost for a second here. I don't think Harry Potter is a manifesto. I think it was a flawed passion project that millennials latched onto because of the fantasy of sticking it to their mean teachers and arbitrarily categorizing themselves (hogwarts houses; it's the thinking millennial's astrology). I think the fact that the series got popular when and how it did was very much a product of its time.

I don't think Harry Potter is the biggest symbol of JKR's bigotry. I think the most flagrant sign of that was how she responded to critics. I watched her become radicalized in real time. I watched how she doubled down on her racism when she was called out for the ways she promoted her tragically mid fantastic beasts movies. I watched her chase marginalized teenagers with a double digit follower count off of twitter for daring to criticize her thought process, and no one with any kind of power standing against her because she was the one who was paying them. This isn't to say Harry Potter is without flaws. This is to say she really didn't give a shit about that. Getting rich and powerful is a hell of a drug, and she had enough sycophants that she had no reason to care about what her critics were saying.

She was convinced that she was a martyr; a voice for the unheard; a leader for the ages, so of course her detractors were the bad guys. And I think we should take this to heart. We should see this as an example of how easy it is to get radicalized; if you think of yourself as a paragon of virtue, you are going to think that whatever you see as good and right is an objective fact. Most people don't know this, but the majority of terfs start out as trans allies. You are not immune to propaganda! You are not immune to falling into dangerous ideologies!!!

This is why the most important thing you can do as an activist is to listen. Do NOT think you're above being wrong; do NOT develop a god complex; do NOT form an identity out of being right all the time. Involve yourselves in the groups you claim to speak for. Listen to trans women; share resources that help trans women; familiarize yourself with the diversity of experiences that trans people have and the struggles they face.

No, none of you are as bad as JKR because you don't have her money or her power. You will likely never have the capacity for harm she does. But check yourselves. Do not affirm yourselves into thinking you always have the moral high ground. Watch yourselves; humble yourselves; check yourselves for signs of cult behavior and internalized prejudice. You are always learning. You will always be learning. Do not allow yourselves to get a power trip from brushing off marginalized voices.

I tore my eyebrow open falling into a flight of shitty stairs at a bar when I was 22 and I completely ignored the bill and stopped being on my credit record a long time ago. University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

Don't know if the above info is the exact reason, but a whole lot of other bullshit from that time in my life did have to be dealt with and this particular incident ultimately never caught up with me 🤞

Medical debt can only be kept on file for a maximum of six years, and so yeah if you dodge it for long enough you're in the clear lol

It may have affected your credit during that time period, but as of fairly recently medical debt can no longer affect your credit. I don't know how long that may be in effect for on the federal level (fuck this administration, that seems like exactly the kind of thing they'd repeal) but more and more states were getting on board before it took effect federally so it may remain true where you (general) live anyways.

The point of this is to say, even if they send you to collections there are no repercussions to ignoring medical debt beyond that facility maybe not allowing you back. And a lot of facilities are required to see you regardless of how much money you owe! It's worth asking.

Currently even though medical debt cannot under (most case) be reported to credit bureaus, they can still sue you, garnish wages, benefits, etc, and also if you’re in an area where a specific hospital owns all the doctors offices, potentially deny you any service that isn’t emergency services.

So, if you do not apply for aid, and ignore your medical bill they can still:

•sue

•garnish your wages or other benefits

•start refusing you service at anyplace other than an emergency room, which notably:

•can make it very hard for you to get medication refills.

I appreciate the intent, @roosterwhale, but denial of service is a big repercussion for people especially with chronic health issues or complicated health problems. Imagine even not being able to get a doctor’s note for work because they refuse service. More places can refuse service than you think, and more than reasonably should be allowed to. And indeed, the collections agency or hospital can choose to sue you for lost debt as well.

It is much better to at minimum apply for aid, as often the application process will at least put your bill on hold.

While there may be no repercussions for you specifically if you were to ignore a bill, that is not true for everyone. I would encourage you to delete your original response so it doesn’t show up in the replies and mislead people.

I can't delete replies on mobile, but I do appreciate your addition. I work in a city so it slipped my mind that some people dont have the luxury of multiple facilities they can move between.

While it is possible that they can sue/garnish wages, and it is good to be aware that that is a possibility, I've literally never worked for or even heard of somewhere that has actually done this. It's generally way more trouble/money than it's worth. This is also something you can ask their billing department about in regards to their policies.

I should have reiterated it in my reblog, but in my other replies I did strongly advocate for attempting to get financial aid.

Much appreciated. It’s likely you’ve not heard of it happening because there are some cities, counties and states that have specifically banned that as being an option, but that number is relatively small, and you may happen to be in one of the places where they’ve made garnishing based on medical bills illegal.

The city I live in, we have two hospitals, and during the pandemic most doctors offices were going under, so the two local hospitals purchased like 90% of medical providers. Which does mean they’re mostly all nonprofits now (good) but wildly expensive and able to unilaterally deny someone service with their system. (Bad)

But still interested in feeding yourself? What if I told you that there’s a woman with a blog who had to feed both herself and her young son…on 10 British pounds ($15/14 Euro) per week?

Let me tell you a thing.

This woman saved my life last year. Actually saved my life. I had a piggy bank full of change and that’s it. Many people in my fandom might remember that dark time as when I had to hock my writing skills in exchange for donations. I cried a lot then.

This is real talk, people: I marked down exactly what I needed to buy, totaled it, counted out that exact change, and then went to three different stores to buy what I needed so I didn’t have to dump a load of change on just one person. I was already embarrassed, but to feel people staring? Utter shame suffused me. The reasons behind that are another post all together.

AgirlcalledJack.com is run by a British woman who was on benefits for years. Things got desperate. She had to find a way to feed herself and her son using just the basics that could be found at the supermarket. But the recipes she came up with are amazing.

You have to consider the differing costs of things between countries, but if you just have three ingredients in your cupboard, this woman will tell you what to do with it. Check what you already have. Chances are you have the basics of a filling meal already.

Here’s her list of kitchen basics.

Bake your own bread. It’s easier than you think. Here’s a list of many recipes, each using some variation of just plain flour, yeast, some oil, maybe water or lemon juice. And kneading bread is therapeutic.

Make your own pasta–gluten free.

She gets it. She really does. This is the article that started it all. It’s called “Hunger Hurts”.

She has vegan recipes.

A carrot, a can of kidney beans, and some cumin will get you a really filling soup…or throw in some flour for binding and you’ve got yourself a burger.

Don’t have an oven or the stove isn’t available? She covers that in her Microwave Cooking section.

She has a book, but many recipes can be found on her blog for free. She prices her recipes down to the cent, and every year she participates in a project called “Living Below the Line” where she has to live on 1 BP per day of food for five days.

Things improved for me a little, but her website is my go to. I learned how to bake bread (using my crockpot, but that was my own twist), and I have a little cart full of things that saved me back then, just in case I need them again. She gives you the tools to feed yourself, for very little money, and that’s a fabulous feeling.

Tip: Whenever you have a little extra money, buy a 10 dollar/pound/euro giftcard from your discount grocer. Stash it. That’s your super emergency money. Make sure they don’t charge by the month for lack of use, though.

I don’t care if it sounds like an advertisement–you won’t be buying anything from the site. What I DO care about is your mental, emotional, and physical health–and dammit, food’s right in the center of that.

Financial Aid Policy

Did you know that most hospitals and some doctor’s offices are what is known as a 501r, or “medical non-profit”?

This means they are legally required to have a “financial aid policy” or “charity care policy”

What is means, is that they are LEGALLY REQUIRED under United States Law to provide FREE OR DISCOUNTED healthcare, and also to FORGIVE EXISTING MEDICAL DEBT to individuals with financial difficulty.

Basically, every household making und $100K a year is eligible for a reduction in their medical costs.

Billing departments often try to push people to get on a “payment plan” if someone asks, but don’t accept it!

Ask if they have a Charity Care or Financial Aid policy “Based On Income.”

If it looks like you might not qualify?

Apply anyway. They try to scare people away with scary processes.

YOU QUALIFY. EVEN IF YOU ARE ALREADY IN COLLECTIONS.
