in some ways I think the whole "the sub is really the one in control" thing that goes around on here sometimes is like. just another way of being uncomfortable with someone desiring and finding pleasure in having power over someone else (or, in the case of sadism/masochism, causing someone pain).

because if the sub is really in control then, well. the dom is still just in service of the sub. it's not about the control/power that they want.

One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.

The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.

And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.

And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.

i was messing with a local LLM and we seemed to be having a relatively cogent conversation about Project Hail Mary and i'm just like, "i don't think it [gemma4] can encode this much detail in 26b parameters. it's gotta have room for the whole internet in there."

so i asked it in a new chat about Poul Anderson's Brain Wave and it tried to pull the same thing, so I asked it: do you remember how the plot to 'revert' intelligence to the baseline was stopped?

and it said it did.

it said, in fact, that the "counter-pulse" failed because the strength of the "brain wave field" was increasing and became too strong. the inevitability of physics crushed human agency and resistance.

😂 that is so not what happened. the actual scene is where the entire coherence of the book was ripped apart for me.

but whatever. why not try again in a new chat?

i asked if it remembered how A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick ended. of course it does: Bob Arctur and Donna/Linda recognize each other, briefly, in rehab, before slipping away again.

And it even added:

The title comes from Coleridge's Frost at Midnight: "The eye, made by the levelling power of sleep, sees / The world in a scanner darkly."

That's Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and that's the title of a poem he wrote. But that's not where the quote actually comes from. It just mashed up some things.

So yeah. It's annoyingly convincing, and even more annoying that while it is so easy to shatter the illusion, it takes actual effort to do so. Otherwise, the battle will be on the territory of its choosing.

found out about the red button/blue button poll thing. if you push the red button, you live. if a majority of people push the blue button, everyone lives, but if only a minority choose blue, everyone who chose blue dies.

i think it says something about culture (probably american culture; i am interacting with Anglonet here) that people see "choosing red" as a null choice, and not a "murder the blues" choice.

the events that happen at Tau Ceti are structured a lot like a romance novel. forced proximity, vulnerability, misunderstandings, etc. the emphasis is different but the bones are similar, right? i talked to my partner about it, who responded, "it sounded like a buddy story." and i'm not sure i can articulate the difference, other than the lack of sex, except that romance novels can do that too (for instance, Amish romances.)

this distinction between 'buddy story' and 'romance' is yet another case where 'everyone' knows what romance is, except aromantics. me in particular.

i agree that the text supports Dr. Grace being aroace, too, so I don't want to paint it too hard with a romance brush.

i ran a local llm (z-image-turbo) on normal hardware i already had (apple silicon) just to play with the politics of the model a bit.

the "guidance" on writing a prompt says to carefully feed it exact clothing and ages, along with vibes, to get it to not generate sexualized/possibly illegal content; indeed, without such care, sometimes things are sexualized unexpectedly. and yet, it is reticent to generate kink. even operating under other keywords, i have not seen it generate any gag. (it's also fuzzy on how a leash works, but at least it generates one.)

sometimes it can't generate an anime version of a subject and falls back to photorealism, like with ATVs or a male cat furry. asking for a cat furry with no gender specified produces a nekomimi.

it doesn't seem to know what "butch" is at all. that gave me the same body type and clothing choice as other prompts. it seems really incapable of doing non-thin bodies. and it has a decided preference for woman-shaped bodies when asked for nonbinary. big hips, big boobs, skimpy clothing. it really does get treated as 'woman lite.'

You know as an American born in the late 90s I’ve watched my country blow up foreigners on tv supposedly in the interest of national security since I was a toddler but quite frankly we live on a natural fortress of a continent with friendly nations to our north and south and have been attacked on our own soil literally two times in the past hundred years and we have military bases on every inhabited continent on earth. It’s never made sense to do these things for “national security”. It never will make sense unless you value the shareholders of weapons companies over the lives of children. And apparently a concerning amount of people do.
