the reason harry never used avada kadavra was because he doesn’t need magic to murder people on the spot

The only favor the Dursleys ever did for Harry...
Make no mistake, the Dursleys are terrible people and unquestionably abusers.
But the one favor they did for Harry was never pretend as though they loved him. Vernon and Petunia made it very clear: You are not a part of this family. We don’t like you and never will.
They didn’t try to frame their abuse as “for Harry’s own good.” They didn’t try to make Harry believe that he could earn their love through good behavior. They didn’t tell him they loved him just as much as they loved Dudley, then subtly treat him like shit.
They were honest. And that honesty allowed Harry to put some emotional distance between himself and the Dursleys, even before Hogwarts. Because if the Dursleys don’t like him, then he didn’t have to like them.
Instead of vying for the Dursleys’ affection, Harry basically snarks his way through childhood, relishing in his status as an outsider. His early descriptions of the Dursleys are practically dripping with razor-sharp snark about their appearances and foibles. He finds comfort in the knowledge that a) he dislikes the Dursleys as much as they dislike him, and b) he alone sees these cartoonishly awful people for who they are.
this is an interesting way of looking at it!
harry’s experience with bullying, rejection, and abuse is very intriguing to me because it’s relatable in a way i wasn’t quite able to put into words before. i also experienced bullying and rejection (though i did not come from an abusive home, far from it), but like harry, i never really doubted my own personal worth to myself. harry doesn’t hate himself at all. but he does doubt that he will be loved and validated by other people.
he definitely knows the dursleys are awful people; no doubt about it. but even so, they were still his first experience with people that he can remember. they are his metric for interacting with the world. so when people come into his life like ron, hermione, the other weasleys, and his other friends, and they don’t just tolerate or put up with him but love him and genuinely want to be with him and care for his wellbeing…it’s not that he doesn’t believe it’s real or that they’re faking it, but he is genuinely amazed by it.
fact is, he’s harry potter and he’s gonna be harry potter regardless of what anyone tells him about himself. he’ll stick up for himself, for his friends, and for what’s right in the face of bullying in rejection because hey, it’s happened before and i got used to it, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t also desperately lonely and in need of true companionship and love and family. and the fact that the story ends with him receiving all of that in spite of everything is so inspiring and beautiful.
Really good points!
Totally agree with you regarding Harry’s sense of his own personal worth. Harry is a nice and down-to-earth guy, but humble isn’t a word I’d use to describe him.
Once again, it comes back to the Dursleys. He learned from a young age that he had to be self-reliant, that no one was going to look out for him but him. He knows who he is and frankly a lifetime of self-sufficiency has made him feel pretty damn competent. It takes a certain amount of conceit to believe that you and you alone can rescue the stone or kill a basilisk or what have you.
But when it comes to other people, you’re right about them being somewhat irrelevant to his self esteem. When the Slytherins insult him or other students turn on him, his reaction is anger, not hurt or self-doubt. Even with Ron and Hermione, he values their friendship but when they criticize him, his reaction is usually more annoyed than hurt. For example, he didn’t dwell on Hermione’s “saving people thing” criticism.
Harry’s a particularly odd case, because he straight from being the weirdo freak that always got picked last for teams to a popular celebrity slash star athlete. And maybe it’s the experience of popularity (and the way it can change at the drop of the hat) that hammered home the idea that other people’s support didn’t really matter.
