"Darksome night, and shining Moon . . . โย The woman, muttering beneath her breath, strolled with faithful pendulum in hand as she circled Jasmine Cottage. Gently swinging back and forth as she paced, the witch was well tuned in with her inner intuition, or third eye, or whatever people were calling it these days -- to her, it was just a Tuesday. Third Tuesday of the month, and the house was due for some recasting of protective spells that have faded. Anathema never thought anything dangerous would try to breach their homestead ( though, her boyfriend may disagree ), but her mother always taught her that it always pays to be extra cautious.
"East by South, by West by southwest . . . west-southwest . . . got you . . ."ย The witch continued, only for a few moments more, before realizing that someone had set foot on the property. Now sheโs going to have to start the ritual all over again . . .
@belladonnicxhazeโ for crowley !
Anathema grew up hearing the name, reading the name, Agnes Nutter. often ringing in her ears within the Device household -- she could go on for hours discussing the little facts about Agnesโ life, and the impact of her words that rippled through her family generationally. Though, sheโll tend to lose that sense of interest once the fact that most of her prophecies donโt really make sense, or seem to apply to anything come to light. Nobody wants to hearย โ Open thine eyes and rede, I do say, foolish principalitee, for thy cocoa doth grow cold. โย when it most certainly does not apply to them, or seem to make any sort of sense. Still, the concept of an entirely correct prophetic work was practically unheard of.
โ You see, Agnes was the worst prophet that's ever existed. Because she was always right. That's why the book never sold. โ

might be coming back with 2 characters off my multi (anathema included) so stay tuned
sometimes making tea is less about drinking it and more ab it keeping you company
also i really like the fact that in the book, anathemaโs referred to asย โ...about as close to being Agnes as genetic drift would allow...โ
sheโs so close to being agnes that her familyโs life and legacy basically come full circle
i keep thinking about thatย โwoodcarverโ witch in brave, and that anathemaโs ancestors probably tried to hide the fact that theyโre witches that way. like they have a ton of family heirlooms from anathemaโs great-great-great grandmother who could make cuckoo clocks that never break as a front for spell making

ย ย ย NEWT HAD BEEN TOO INVESTEDย in a bookย labeled supernatural phenomena to really pay attention to anything else around him. and โ itโs not as he would, either. respectfully, when anathema spoke to her mother, newt always justย ( rightfully ) left her alone. but he closes the book, becoming bored with the contents ( heโll say, at least. the supernatural had fucked up shit, )ย newt .. canโt imagine the conversation taking place literal feet behind him. they averted the apocalypse, for now, and anathema still hasnโt returned home. though, he couldnโt imagine it was worseย than his own mother, worried as she is, calling. ( though, why should people complain about someone caring ? )
ย newt hopes it doesnโt appear like heโs waiting on her. instead, he removes his glasses and sets them aside on the nightstand. newt has sometimes, often wondered why he hasnโt returned home , either. suppose it had subconsciously been a shared thought between the two of them. Newt asks questions when he has thoughts like such, but this time, heโs unsure of the answer.
anathema exhales, almost a relieved sigh. worse turmoil than having stopped the apocalypse, it seems staying in tadfield and not returning home was a far more risky feat. never mind the fact that they had burned agnes nutterโs second book of predictions, and anathema still hasnโt had the heart to tell her about it. she and newt had already decided, together, that the future wonโt be commanded by some book. doesnโt mean it still wonโt be commanded by her mother.ย
thoughts, worry, stress melt away when she remembers isolating herself on the roof. thereโs a warm glow from the bedroom window, still. sheโs already forgotten how long sheโs been outside. the young woman slides herself down, descends slowly and back through their bedroom window. sheโs not surprised to find newt still awake, probably having buried himself in a book the entire timeย anyway. either way, itโs a relief, admittedly, to simply see his face.
she practically melts into the bed, and rests her head on his shoulder.

โUhโ yeah.โ He scratches his head as he wracks his brain, trying to remember her. Though, to be completely fair, if she recognizes him from the pub, the chances of him recalling any meaningful interactions are slim to none. Still, even if he canโt quite place this woman, he canโt shake the feeling that thereโs something a bit peculiar about her. Not in a threatening sense, just in the my gut feels funky around you and I havenโt even eaten today so something is definitely up sort of sense. Sheโs not the one heโs looking for, at least heโs 75% sure of it, but sheโs definitelyโฆsomeone.
โOh, Iโm not moving in. Justโฆvisiting.โ He flashes a small smile.ย โWhyโdโyou wanna know? Doesnโt sound like youโre from around these parts either, you donโt have their funny accent.โ
in reality, anathema is simply very nosy, by nature. it was once her great-great-great-great-great grandmotherโs best feature, simply knowing everything even though she didnโt understand it. anathema in every sense remains the closest replica of agnes nutter to date, so it puts her mind at ease to just know things.
โ iโm from california. iโve recently moved here myself, thatโs why i was wondering. โย well, itโs certainly one of the reasons.ย ย โ i um, didnโt get much of a warm welcome so . . . figured i might try to pay something forward. โย that sounds like a completely tangible reason, right? anathema quickly remembers to smile, honestly trying not to find something suspicious about a man who doesnโt quite fit into their almost cookie-cutter setting.ย ย โ iโm anathema device. โ
โFatty spliffersโ?
โ i know, mom . . . โย tone soft and low, sheโs trying to keep quiet even though sheโs camped out on the roof of jasmine cottage, well out of earshot of the bedroom. of course, bickering with her mother in the middle of the night wasnโt an ideal scenario, but even her overbearing mother can give good advice. she always knew what to do, but anathema begins to wonder if it was only because of the book.ย โ i wouldnโt have stayed if i didnโt โ โย anathemaโs fingers tighten around her phone; sometimes itโs difficult to keep the conversation on subject.
โ just โย listen! i need you to send me the rest of my books . . . no, the spell books. i knowย โย โ halts abruptly, certain sheโs heard something over the peaceful silence, and anathema attempts to cut the conversation short.ย ย โ i have to go, mom. let me know when youโve mailed them. love you. โ
