My LEAST favorite characterization of Simon is when people make him stoic. Markiplier did not act his ass off for ppl to portray him as aloof and having no external emotion.

This man is NOT quiet and non-emotional and I’m really tired of seeing bloodymary fics that make it seem like he’d keep everything inside. The guy who blurted “I think I died.” And “I’m seeing things” and “what? I can’t ask a question?”. In a non-life threatening situation he would be talkative and snarky and emotional and awkward.

I’ve read a lot of bloodymary fics and I’m just getting tired of seeing this specific characterization. He can appear aloof and standoffish sure, but I really don’t think he’d stay that way the second someone engages with him. Anyway, he’s not just the angry grumpy reserved trope to Graces sunshine trope.

I will die on the hill of “Grace would rather internalize and repress everything until the day he dies and simply cope by being as self-destructive as possible” (see the deleted scene of his entire drunken spiral) and Simon is constantly fighting between saying the Correct Thing vs the Really Fucking Funny Thing (and often times the later is what wins out because this man loves to get under someone’s skin, ESPECIALLY if they’ve been an asshole to him already)

The only time we see Simon reserved is about Filament Station. He’s not forthcoming about things he knows others have used against him.

That’s not the same as being stoic or aloof and even then, when pushed enough, he WILL begrudgingly talk about it (ie the voice pressuring him into revealing what happened to Filament Station).

As for Grace being the sunshine trope…the sun is also a giant ball of fire. Grace is the kind of person who is trying to be the epitome of soft, and gentle and sunshine-y in the traditional sense because it’s the only thing keeping him from possibly killing a man. He does NOT want to talk about how he’s really feeling, he’ll deny it as long as he can and cope with as many distractions as he can possibly find.

DO

celebrate other people’s good news (tell them that what happened was great, they earned/deserve it, you’re happy for them, elaborate on how it’s a good thing and why they deserve to be happy about it)

sympathize with other people’s troubles (tell them what they’re going through sucks, they did their best, point out that not all is lost (use examples of what they still have going for them) but it can still fucking suck)

react and ask questions related to what people say to you (ask for elaborations or explanations, ask about future plans, ask how things went before, relate the things they’ve said now to things they’ve said in the past, use their name sometimes, add your own (positive or neutral) perspective on the events, share related experiences)

if someone is instigating a fight or pissing you off, just walk away – or, if it’s all online, block them (it’ll make you look better, i promise)

ask about their day/state and pay attention to what they say, and apply the first three as needed

snark or make jokes/puns, if you have them, and be willing to laugh at other people’s jokes/snark/puns

share good events, interesting things, and the things that make you happy/excited (try not to ‘qualify’ these, i.e. add on reasons why you should be sad about the news, or why the news wasn’t actually that great – it’s not the end of the world if you do, but it does defeat the purpose a bit)

share bad events or things you’re unhappy about (it’s important to open up, and it’s unreasonable to expect yourself to be happy all the time; just make sure it’s balanced out by the positives as well)

remember that nobody does things that are senseless, and the sooner you can figure out why someone is doing what they’re doing, the easier it’ll be to deal with and negotiate (common reasons for baffling or harmful actions are: distress, self-interest, misguided altruism, unquestioned biases, peer pressure, thoughtlessness)

keep in mind that everyone (including you) is doing their best at any given time, and sometimes that ‘best’ just isn’t that good

TRY NOT TO

be harsh about or insult yourself (keeping in mind that that is taking side swipes at other people who have those traits, regardless of how you mean it)

point out why people should feel bad about the things they’re happy about

ignore all the specifics of what the person you’re speaking with is saying

spend a significant amount of time mocking other people (we all need to vent and we all have our moments; the operative word here is significant – don’t make it your personality)

put down to malice what can adequately be explained by stupidity (don’t assume someone is being cruel when they could just as well be doing it because they’re dumb/oblivious)

dismiss or belittle other people’s distress (it’s not a competition, and their distress is real regardless)

dismiss or belittle other people’s happiness or interest (it’s not a competition, and their happiness is something you want in order to Not Be Mean)

(this is both non-exhaustive and not ironclad, simply a list of general things to aim for and skills to practice)

basically, ‘people will largely stick by you through pretty dark shit if you make their lives brighter the rest of the time’ is super legit and something to lean into

Okay well y'all got me thinking about a Tattoo Artist/Florist AU for BloodyMary so here's what me and @leebeearts came up with!

Putting it under the cut but I've decided to name it Ink and Florals

⭐ After getting fired post-conference debacle , Ryland decides to get FAR far away from academia as a whole. It's too stressful, cost him a bunch of relationships and his livelihood because he couldn't keep it together.

⭐ unclear on if he met Rocky before or after this event. Maybe they were college roommates for a bit? Who knows. But Rocky and Adrian are both tattoo artists and Ryland decides he might as well give it a shot because he's got some artsy experience doing his scientific drawings for his research.

⭐ He starts going by Ry and apprenticing under Rocky. Around this time Rocky makes it clear that no one wants to get tattooed by someone who doesn't have any themself, but Ry is nervous so they start with piercings. He learns how to do it by watching Rocky pierce his ears and tongue in a hand-mirror before he starts properly shadowing.

⭐ Ry gets his tongue pierced as well as his ears because Rocky insists that just doing his ears is boring as hell and makes him pick something else too, so he picks something that hopefully won't get noticed

⭐ Rocky's style is v particular to him but at its basics, it's mix of geometric and tribal that he developed himself and he can get really deep into the details if he wants to/if it's requested

⭐ Adrian's style is more of a painterly/watercolor vibe, loves loves loves working with colors

⭐ Ry develops a style of realism but specifically leans into scientific drawings as tattoos. A bit niche but he loves it

⭐ Eventually as he does this for a couple years, he starts not only tattooing himself but he ends up with sleeves from both Adrian and Rocky.

⭐ Adrian's sleeve is space themed with Adrian the planet in there coincidentally (and maybe an artistic rendering of the petrova line even though it probably doesn't exist in this AU because I think it's neat!!!)

⭐ Rocky's sleeve is on his entire left arm, shoulder, and a bit of his chest and back. Dude went ham on it but Grace loves it despite how long it took (also aaaye representation of his burn scars).

⭐ once he's established as no longer an apprentice this is probably where a fic would actually start.

⭐ Coltland twins moment: Colt comes back into Ry's life after he's out of his apprenticeship and Ry has a bunch of tattoos and stuff now, and Colt gets mad his nerdy ass brother is somehow cooler than him now

⭐ Adrian used to be the one to go but they start sending Ry instead, going to the florist every week or so to pick up fresh flowers for the shop, which is how he meets Simon!

⭐ Simon is an ex-convict, one arm with a prosthesis, a couple of really neat prison tattoos but nothing professionally done.

⭐ Classic Simon falls first but Ry falls harder vibe

⭐ I don't have an exact path of how it starts but Simon starts leaving little messages in the flowers he gives Ry based on their meanings like "good luck" when he knows he has a big session planned with a client or daffodils for when he's coming in after a bad day/week previous

⭐ eventually he starts sneaking Gardenias in there (secret love, deep admiration)

⭐ Adrian is the one to point it out because Grace has never looked up the "meaning" of a flower in his gd life so he just assumes Simon likes whatever he's putting together for the shop

⭐ at some point In here Simon ends up coming in spontaneously to get his nipples pierced (a mystery tool that will help us later 😈) and Adrian and Rocky are out at a tattoo expo, leaving Ry to run the shop by himself. He's done piercings before but never nipples specifically

⭐ he gets Simon the forms and stuff and leaves to get what he needs, come back and almost drops his tools because WHOA SIMONS BARE CHEST (He took off his shirt while Ryland was out of the room)

⭐ insert the meme: "huh I think Ryland's autistic or very focused on his job because he's not making eye contact at all" meanwhile Ry is just in his head "WHOA WHAT A RACK!!!!"

⭐ Ry confronts Simon about the flowers and Simon panics and lies just saying he thinks they're pretty/smell nice, and Ryland believes him because he's always prepared to assume no one's into him and thats normal to him. So he doesn't question it (and Simon gets a bit sad and frustrated over it)

⭐ eventually Simon sends him w a bouquet of MOSTLY gardenias and Rocky and Adrian are shaking Ryland's shoulders like ASK HIM ON A DATE ALREADY HES INTO YOU

⭐ so Ry goes back to the shop. Asks for a bouquet of flowers meaning things like "I'm sorry" and "new love" and "optimism" and Simon IMMEDIATELY thinks "damn of course he has someone"

⭐ Simon asks him when the flowers are for, wanting to pry despite the fact he's bummed as hell. Ryland says something like "oh uhh I mean they're for you"

⭐ Simon drops the flowers and kisses him over the counter

Really enjoying the idea that Grace's angry outburst in Denmark became a meme. The Angry Scientist. It shows up in discussions of egregiously bad sci-fi movies and arguments with antivaxxers and astrophage deniers, in forms ranging from pristine screencap to super-crunchy jpeg. There's an animated parody in the style of Ace Attorney. His students use it without realizing it's him.

In his first week on the Gansu six different people asked him about it and four asked Stratt why she hired Angry Scientist Meme guy.
