the project hail mary fandom is great because it’s almost two separate fandoms. one is people who really love the film and/or the book and are very passionate about them. they have their eridian OCs and headcanons about the world after the beetles return to earth, they probably also get the EWC as well

and then part of it is building an intricate interconnected crossover world that links several movies that have almost nothing in common, which, almost akin to goncherov, has collectively constructed lore and plot points that are widely accepted and discussed identically to canon

obviously some people cross over between both sides but occasionally there’ll be people who are unaware of the other group and they’ll interact, and every time it is beautiful. both of these types of people are correct btw.

You know, I forget I'm disabled sometimes.

Example; I'm having my first flare up with my legs since at least a year ago

Walking is hard but just standing is even harder?? The fact that I am ill definitely doesn't help at all. I'm gonna have to leave work early to just sleep the rest of the day bc like

I'm sweating? A LOT? At the type of exertion that would normally not affect me in the slightest???

If I wasn't myself I'd have a better mentality abt it for sure but like maaaan this shit ssuuuuucks why can't I be "normal"

My fiance just ranted at me about eyes and photoreceptors and electroreceptors for the last 20ish mins and he only stopped cuz I gotta leave for work but holy shit dude!! What if eridians HAD PHOTORECEPTORS!! Like UEAH they don't have eyes, and yeah they echolocate but what if it was like an appendix situation!! Useless organ body things that don't do anything in their natural environment but also aren't actively working against them, just kinda there.

Bc DUDE you could get some real freaky situations with that shit!! Rocky just sitting there in the dark doing whatever and like flinching when grace turns the Mary's lights on in that room!

If I were a smarter man id be able to come up with better little situations as examples but I'm SURE somebody could go somewhere with this!!!

oooh this is fun!

so two things, first this reminded me that humans actually have retinal cells sensitive to UV light, but the lenses in our eyes actually filter the UV so we cant see it. this was discovered when the first artificial lenses were implanted and suddenly people could see shit that was brand new! They now put a UV filter in the artificial lenses. This is probably a holdover from an ancestor somewhere down the line that did need to see UV, but our genome is just chockers full of stuff like that, little bits of code that never got deleted because there was nothing damaging about it that would get filtered out by natural selection.

Secondly, and this is just a personal example but I've never heard of anyone else getting this and my radiologist says it shouldn’t happen, but I have to get CT scans on my skull every few months* and I can actually see it when the xray passes through either my eyeballs or my optic nerve. I'm always face down with my eyes closed, but when it goes through this particular spot on my skull I see a really clear band of opaque blueish grey on the top 1/3 of my vision, with a very clean cutoff, while the remaining vision is just normal eyes closed vague blackness.

* (I have occipital neuralgia and get CT guided nerve blocks, they use the CT like a camera to make sure the needles are perfectly inside the nerves before injecting them with shut the fuck up juice)

I have no idea why it happens but it happens almost every time, and obviously its extremely unlikely that there’s any junk DNA that lets you perceive strong xrays, but its clearly tickling a nerve somewhere in an unexpected way that nobody has ever bothered checking for.

all this is to say that theres so many ways that Rocky could sense light without seeing! especially if there is any kind of evolutionary ancestor that spent time in the upper atmosphere where the photosynthesising bacteria are! it would benefit them to be able to perceive light in some way, and they may have left raggedy bits of dna just waiting for an Eridian to get flashbanged by a weird leaky space blob!

Getting a little sidetracked, but this reminds me of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells! Basically, the cells in the eye that are responsible for vision (rods and cones) are sensitive to light (duh). But there are other cells in the retina (ganglion cells) that relatively recently been discovered to ALSO be sensitive to light, but not in a way that contributes to our regular vision. These intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (or ipRGC for short) have been shown to contribute to regulation of the circadian rhythm and also pupil constriction in response to light in mice (and likely also humans). Idk, i just think it's neat that there are cells in the retina that sense light but have these other jobs.

Not gonna tag this how I usually would but I don't wanna blow up my friends phone with my yapping .. soo, a lot of personal rambling about plurality beneath the cut

So! I learned the other day (yesterday?) that p-did is a thing! And jesus, it would explain a LOT. I've made friends with/ interacted with ~6(?) systems in the last 6 years and I'm pretty sure ALL of them had made comments being surprised when I explained that I didn't think I was plural, cuz, I had A LOT of experiences that would fit with me being a system/ having did

And I've been wondering myself since I first met a system irl because hey, I do that! Those behaviors? Experiences? That's me! But I couldn't get any head mates to respond to me for the longest time, and I didn't experience the same type of amnesia or memory gaps that "normal" systems would, which didn't help the confusion.

But partial did? Especially with one to two front stuck for years? That explains all of it. Literally all of it. So I'm certainly plural. Been kinda busy processing that during work today, rambling about it to my friend who's basically another me (INCLUDING HAVJNG DID MIND YOU) to get over it

So I'm plural. Downloaded an app for logging shit with it. Was gonna use simply plural but apparently it shut down a while ago (I am unbothered) so I downloaded prism plural instead and quite like it! We were figuring it out a bit and another member came to front and actually said some stuff!

I essentially summoned him it was kinda funny. I could feel him hovering, so I made him a little profile and from that he immediately joined me in front. We're currently calling him red! Since I'm shit at naming and most other members aren't super solid I've just been making numbered profiles so far.

4 was fronting with me a bit ago, but I didn't realize he left oops

Hmm, Eridians do have photoreceptors in their nervous system, especially the hot blood half iirc. Possibly there could be Eridians with minor disorders of development that make their joints a little bit clear, or something, and the right wavelength of light would like make their limb contract or their claws grasp. That said their nerves are surely sheathed in blackout material… but maybe not THAT opaque. Maybe shining a powerful flashlight around down their vents or all up in their abdominal cavity could give them some weird inadvertent nerve sensations!

OH OH OOH. What if Rocky’s shattered scar is light sensitive!! Because some of his optical nerve endings are (or healed up) exposed! It would be fine in the dark on Erid (it quiets right down, if he ever has cause to be in total darkness again) but when he’s around Grace, he gets prickles or author-free-space-consequences in/because of it.

I've been playing around with this idea for a while but i never posted about it because it felt a little too sci fi... but i was wondering if, for example, he had nerve crystals internally that were visible when he opens up to eat or otherwise. if they would be affected by the lights in grace's ship. would only certain wavelengths trigger it? intensities? would it be a bad or a good feeling.... weird misinput light that means nothing... or something. possibly even good things. ykwim
