"Ultimately what kills me about Heated Rivalry is not just its dazzling, galvanic love story, nor its commitment to both narrative and erotic caretaking, but how it makes me feel about the not [yet] here of Melville’s imaginaries. I recently talked about the show and the novel with Rachel O’Connell, a literature scholar and new friend. She cracked open what I’ve been scrabbling at in my HR/MD monomania: the literary genre of contemporary MM romance provides one structural realization of an imagined world that Melville was trying to write into being in Moby-Dick. The messy, unfinished architecture of the novel cannot, as Ishmael confesses, 'be here, and at once, perfected.'

And not just in the novel: After all, Melville had asked Nathaniel Hawthorne to his cottage. In 1851, while composing Moby-Dick, he wrote Hawthorne a series of letters as heated by mid-19th-century standards as any scene in Heated Rivalry. In inviting his own possible situationship to come to his home—in his first known letter to Hawthorne—Melville, like a doped-up, concussed Shane, affects a lightness that doesn’t disguise its own feverishness: 'I am not to be charmed out of my promised pleasure […]. Your bed is already made, & the wood marked for your fire. […] I keep the word ‘Welcome’ all the time in my mouth, so as to be ready on the instant when you cross the threshold.' This 'welcome,' pleasurably effervescent on the tongue but freighted with the unsaid, is Melville’s version of the Canada Dry ginger ale and Coca-Cola that Ilya and Shane stock for each other."

one time I went over to a friend's house and their housemate was making paper in the living room, and we saw this big tub full of water they were using to dissolve old scrap paper into a slurry, and everyone was immediately like "oh, you need scrap paper?" and started turning out their jacket pockets and producing expired coupons and bus tickets and crumpled receipts and old shopping lists and whatever else they'd been carrying round with them for no good reason, and passing it all to the paper-making housemate to make sure it was suitable before it got torn up and dropped into the tub, while people took turns stirring the slurry with a big wooden stick. it was strangely ritualistic, like presenting an offering to some kind of temple elder for inspection before placing it in a watery shrine to be devoured and reformed. pulp for the pulp god.

loved tenet (2020), but core criticisms:

1. treatment of women/female characters. self explanatorily bad, boring, unsubverting

2. uncritical presentation of cia lmao genuinely it is kinda funny that a core premise is protagonist is cia and protagonist is honorable. i get that there's a meta textual level here, a self awareness, but its just not engaged with in a way that actually persuades me of its self awareness

3. lack of explicit gay sex between protagonist and neil. they should have had backwards/forwards time travel sex idefc

4. Too many toys. needed a lot more focus for something with only 3 hours to play with. The final set piece Absolutely should have been back at the opera, but there were clearly too many things nolan wanted to get in. the plot should have been way more streamlined e.g. he should have just stuck with the inverted people, not also had the inverted objects imo. the final note of the thing should have been the strings tuning in reverse

5. very old school cold war plot. i get that thats the point, its meta textual, but it still felt a bit done tbqh, i had hoped for a subversion of the trope somewhere

6. villain's aims were kind of boringly straightforward. idk i think that could be purposeful but would have prefered it to be lampshaded

7. should have been some way to distinguish the original neil from the neil that's from the future, at least in retrospect idk

8. why were the strings only tuning on one string lmao

9. no seriously instruments tuning is very recogniseable. I'm maybe missing something but like that didn't make sense to me

10. would have been nice to have had a second to breath with these characters or get to know them on some level. even if that in itself is a subversion i.e. if the protagonist doesnt seem to have any backstory

Anyway I really enjoyed it and will be completing a full rewatch asap
