The clock on the wall read 12:30 when the chime of the gas station door announced the arrival of new customers. Lilith barely looked up, assuming it was just another trucker coming after a late night pit stop.
Her indifference quickly shifted when she heard the sharp tones of an argument between two men.
“You’re paying this time,” one of them insisted.
“With what fucking money?”
Lilith sighed and returned to scrolling on her phone, trying to ignore the argument. Her focus was broken again when three more people entered the store.
“Will both of you shut the fuck up!” A girl’s voice cut through the commotion with frustration.
The boy with black shaggy hair and a wicked smile engraved turned towards the girl. “Toby, get your dog.”
“Fuck off Jeff,” said Toby, a lanky figure with floppy brown hair.
The final member of the group was an extremely tall figure cloaked in a hood, their face hidden completely. As the group continued, an uneasy atmosphere lingered in the store, leaving Lilith feeling strangely uncomfortable.
Jeff finally approached the counter and his scowl quickly melted into a grin. “Hi, pretty girl. Mind ringing me up?”
Lilith tried to remain indifferent, but his comment made her slightly flustered. What could she say? She had a weakness for losers.
“Jeff, stop flirting and just pay,” the shorter blonde boy said without looking up from his phone.
Jeff rolled his eyes but returned his focus to Lilith. “How much do I owe you, doll?”
“$25.37,” she replied shortly, aiming to finish up the transaction. Jeff might be attractive in her eyes but his demeanor was unsettling.
“You’re scaring the poor girl, Jeffrey,” the hooded figure interjected. His voice was unsettlingly deep, setting off alarm bells in her head.
“You’re all set,” Lilith said, forcing a small smile as she handed Jeff his bag.
He winked at her before leaving the store, his friends following close behind.
Before the door closed, the girl from earlier called out, “I’m telling Nina.”
Lilith rolled her eyes. She returned to her phone, checking the list her boss had sent her.
While she was stocking the energy drinks, the bell above the door chimed again.
“Hey, you, what’s your name?” The same girl from earlier approached.
“Lilith. How can I help you?” She responded, slightly glancing up.
“Okay, Lilith, can you show me where the bandages are?”
“Yeah, sure,” Lilith said, standing up and leading her to the first aid aisle. “Here we are. Whenever you’re ready, I’ll meet you up front.” She offered the girl a friendly smile.
“Thanks, doll.” With that, the girl walked off, and Lilith returned to the counter.
“How much do I owe you?” the girl asked sharply.
“$5.97,” Lilith replied as she bagged the items.
“Fuck I only have five bucks,” the brunette said, clearly frustrated.
“No worries, I’ve got it,” Lilith said with a small smile as she handed the girl her things. “Just keep Jeff in check. I don’t get involved with guys who have girlfriends.”
“Hah, they’re not dating, but she’s fucking obsessive and might come pay you a visit. Don’t worry, I’ll keep her in line. I’m Natalie. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing each other more often.”
“Well have a good night, Natalie,” Lilith said quietly.
“You too,” Natalie replied before heading out the door.
Lilith let out a sigh as the door closed behind her. It was going to be a long night.
