To be honest, I'm getting pretty freaking sick about hearing "but-but my ESCAPISM!!🥺" and "I just want to play with my digital dollies!!🥺" when people are just outright refusing to acknowledge that the very politically charged media the claim to be such big fans of does in fact include political themes.

"I JUST wanna talk about my blorbos!!! I love them so much!!" Okay but your precious blorbos spend the whole time gripping you by the face saying "Listen to me. Listen to me. This this is a story about oppressive government and the destruction of the environment and the dangers of xenophobia and propaganda and is directly allegorical for things that are happening in your world" and you're not even fucking listening to them. You obviously don't care about them THAT much.

Any time I think of people railing about this or that is policial, this or that means you always have to engage with the biases, that simply choosing not to engage with this 'understanding' of the material, that just trying to enjoy a piece of work as a piece of work you enjoy makes you evil cause you're not doing the thing RIGHT;

There is something truly toxic about how academic language is being weaponized in fan spaces. Historical, literary, and theoretical references used not to critique a text or lead to greater understanding of it, but instead to bludgeon anyone who disagrees or disappoints. It bothers me because these posts often look and feel persuasive at first, but don’t hold up to any scrutiny. They are also really long, which again, looks like deep analysis, but in the end, feels more like gish galloping disguised as critique/analysis.

I would love to see more meta in fandom, and it bothers me that academic discourse is being used for clout and influence rather than as an invitation to discuss.

A whole lot of people need to rethink how you talk about media. When you actively describe the show as an “infestation” that is “taking away” the joy people have, when you describe the show as “rotten,” written by people who “despise” the fandom, and claim, “the tale is abusing me, the tale is hate criming me,” you prime people towards violence. If you believe words and representations have the potential to cause harm, you need to take responsibility for your own fucking words.

alia is just a story about an emotionally intelligent sensitive (+mentally ill) child who got neglected and left behind and that made her emotionally vulnerable and susceptible to drug addiction and grooming. we all understand alia was groomed right? also the reason she was groomed by a man already long dead is because having a groomer in the family hardly leaves once they're gone because these impacts go on for generations. duncan is the first person who shows up and offers her the slightest glimpse of love and she grabs it immediately but it isn't enough. and leto is close to her. the cycle goes on. i love her sorry guys

It's interesting that I perceive the dead Baron in a completely different way - for me Alia wasn't just pathologically deprived of love from the very beginning and forced to grow up too fast, she was used by her family. She was born as a sacrifice by Lady Jessica for her son.

Essentially, the only person she loved her entire life, whom she served devotedly and for whom she laid herself on the altar, was Paul Atreides. He could always count on his sister - notice that in Dune Messiah, he uses her for advice, but all his thoughts and feelings are occupied only by Chani and his own prescience. He doesn't even really perceive her as a living feeling person - the scene where he enters the gym while she's training naked and suddenly discovers that his little sister has grown up speaks to this. Alia is convenient, reliable, obedient, she is his "battle comrade". But there's no point in blaming Paul, he is also a broken personality, and a broken person can rarely give love to another; mostly, they extract resources.

Alia killed the Baron for her brother because he couldn't (according to her words). Alia became a part of his empire, even though she didn't like it. Alia attended council meetings, even though she hated them. Alia killed the conspirators. Alia ate spice for Paul. Alia didn't have children (even though she wanted them) because Chani couldn't, and she was ready!!!! to give them to Paul, and later she essentially became regent for his children.

When Paul abandoned her and walked into the desert, she was abruptly left with no love, no support, and no reason to live. Her psyche made the most logical move and formed the personality of the Baron - "If no one loves me, everyone uses me, I have no value to anyone, then love is a weakness and it doesn't exist. However, I have an entire empire of resources, and since things have turned out this way, why shouldn't I try to love myself?"

The Baron is a selfish, pathological "love" for oneself in conditions of a love deficit, which later transforms into a complete inability for empathy towards anyone, yet it serves as a good means of survival in a toxic environment. This is why, by the way, I consider innerBaron/Alia to be quite sincere – the Baron is the external shell that protected the wounded girl inside and contributed to her survival. And, by the way, in fact, the dark side of Alia's psyche was the only thing that tried to prevent her suicide in the end of "CoD".
