While I'm not sure I would say every country fulfills both conditions, most countries/nations/cultures have had the idea of 'the other'/barbarian/not us, and thus anything that happens to them is fair game. Some play to it to extremes, others single a handful out, others it's a bit more loose but the idea of 'not us' and thus we don't care has existed for ... like most of human history?

And actually historically banned books that the library had, like The Bible or Fanny Hill or Capital weren’t on that table. None of these people were even going to go to bat for The Turner Diaries.

“Banned Books” to librarians and booksellers is a hype thing and, kind of punishment/reward for a parent somewhere questioning if it should be part of the compulsory curriculum or in the school library. It’s about school required and recommended reading and culture war, not censorship.

Actual banned kids books… are mostly racist. Eg. Little Black Sambo, the original Dr Doolittle books, To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street.

The Banned Books thing is a hype thing yes, and to show off how silly censorship can be if we let every little thing bother us. Basically any book can get on the list so long as it's been banned, or at the very least challenged. Doesn't matter how long the ban was or if it was like a state's school system banning it, a city's, or even just one school or library; it goes on the list to show off the attempted censorship/banning.

We can argue how.... performative it is these days, or at the very least how some people on both sides treat it, but at the end of the day, I think it does more good than harm, or at least the harm people try to use it to hammer each other with these days.

The statement 'Considering the limited processing power available to computers, games prefer to place npc's the player is likely to interact with in the world, rather than ones they are less likely to interact with' would be all that one would ever need. And while you can couple that with 'People responded exceptionally badly to people making fun of/assaulting a Suffragette in RDR2' and extrapolate a limitation on being willing to put said NPC's in games, all you really have to do in this specific conversation is point out that child abuse is a startlingly rare event (at 7.7% per 100000 each year in the US) and realize that this is not so much a conversation about NPC's at all and more of a 'OP wants to have an argument and is looking for a proxy to justify whatever yelling they wish to do'.

We all know the MAiD program is evil but you have to click links and do some additional research to realize how bad this particular case was.

Patient had non terminal IBD. The non terminal part is key because when MAid started in 2016 it was for the terminal ill, in the throes of end of life pain and suffering. Death with dignity and all the catch phrases. It has since expanded to include (basically) a voluntary request, “sound mind”…and also eligible for public funded healthcare. That’s basically it although there are some other quantifiers that fall under the umbrella of those three items.

Weird it’s only eligible if taxpayers pay for it but let’s go on.

Total time from first interaction in parking lot to time of death was two hours. Clearly the face to face time for assessing his condition and his mental status was significantly less than that. Trained psychiatrists often take several hours with a new patient to assess the overall condition and then make guarded assessments for full diagnosis. This doc likely took 10 mins of “assessment” and surely led the conversation directly into the path of MAiD.

Why? Because there is financial incentive. It varies but let’s just say $1000. $500/hr pretty good ROI…if you’re evil.

Patient had history of alcohol abuse, suicide ideation, mental illness and depression.

Doctor is a family doctor. Not a psychiatrist or other mental health clinician capable of determining the degree of his mental status. But such is the MAid program. Any licensed physician and even nurse practitioners can participate in MAiD. It’s a voluntary program if they get “tHe tRaInInG”.

In short he was not of sound mind. Not capable of making decisions. A family doctor could say “he’s NOT of sound mind” (ie it’s obvious he has issues) but only a psych guy could say he was (ie he’s a unique unicorn but understands his decisions and their ramifications).

Imagine your dermatologist ending your life under this program. “Hey…you got actinic keratosis…we could liquid nitrogen burn it off…but have you ever just thought of killing your self instead?”

Thus the entire program and this case in particular is just evil and incentivized.

The same doctor botched a prior case. Declared the guy dead because he didn’t give the right meds…again…he’s a family doc doing complex anesthesia like procedures he’s not qualified to understand. And even then he just didn’t follow the directions. The case:

• Dr. MacLean was providing Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to Stewart at the patient’s home.

• He administered medications from a backup MAiD kit but failed to properly include or administer one of the key drugs — specifically, the neuromuscular-blocking agent (paralytic) that is part of the standard three-drug protocol.

• After giving propofol (which induces unconsciousness), MacLean could not detect a heartbeat and pronounced the patient dead.

• He then left the patient’s home.

• Shortly afterward, Stewart resumed spontaneous breathing (he “woke up”/started breathing again).

Dr. MacLean was called back, returned to the home, administered additional medication (including the missing paralytic), and pronounced death a second time. The patient ultimately died

The consequences for all the above obvious incompetencies? Six months of “supervision”. So basically none.

Just astoundingly evil this program. The participants and the consequences. The Canadian officials who support this program are just demons.

Most teachers care very much. Its the only reason we stay in the low-paying, soul-sucking, burnout inducing profession for so long. The education system is built on emotionally manipulating teachers into doing unpaid labor, without which it would cease to function.

Teachers beg parents to read to their kids. Parents don't. We try to get kids to work through frustration, but parents have given them screens to microdose them with dopamine all day long, so they're incapable of focusing or sitting with discomfort. We're not allowed to tell kids they're wrong, and not allowed to hold kids back even if there's no way they could succeed in the next grade, since they can't read. When we do get to hold a kid back? Parents can appeal it and the school board will automatically pass the kid to the next grade in most districts.

Teachers care more than anyone gives us credit for, but it's much easier to ignore what we say while blaming us for not fixing a system we have zero control over. Teachers have been sounding the alarm about the literacy crisis since WAY before covid, and no one wanted to hear it. Teachers can't be the only ones working with kids and expect them to succeed. And I don't just mean working on reading. I'm talking about teaching kids how to handle emotions, how to not hit people, how to take no for an answer, and how to recover when they're disregulated. Teachers are increasingly expected to handle aaaaalllll that (and worse) times 30 (or more) before we can even begin to teach what the kids are actually supposed to be learning. And we get told if we just create relationships it will all be fixed. Oh and also make our lessons more engaging (when our competition for their attention is tiktok). Oh and document every behavior and every intervention (which means every single thing WE did to bend over backwards and try to get kids to participate in any way in their own learning, and also all the things WE did to fix their behavior problems before we get any support from admin) because "if you didn't document it it didn't happen. That documentation, btw, is pretty much always done for free outside of contract hours because there's not time in the day for it. And we don't get paid overtime. So tell me again how "teachers couldn't care less".

I just have some problems with it.

Look. I do agree, trying to paint everyone with "teachers couldn't care less" brush is bad but having saw how other teachers acted when my mom WAS teaching, especially in special ed, has left me with the idea that yes, there are teachers that care. There are teachers that try. There are teachers that go outside of their expected duties and means to try and get something going for these kids. My mom was one of these And by the sound of it, Auseful if they teach also is one.

And then you have the teachers that just fucking don't care. At all.

The ones that don't document stuff not because it takes time away from them, but because they just don't like paper work. Or dumping the expected paper work onto someone else. Or, after my mom switched from teacher role to an administration position, walk into the class room, the kids are being kids and not doing work just kinda acting up and the teacher is on fucking instangram. Hell a handful of these would try to get a kid tested not out of the kindness of their hearts to put them into a more suitable teaching environment but because FUCK I don't wanna deal with this brat, get him away from me!

These teachers stay because well there's not enough teachers, they don't rock the boat enough to get canned, and they still do the job which is 'just pass the kid'. And it's not about teaching the kid to think or learn but just how to not annoy the teacher for most the year and how to pass the few tests that actually matter.

Admins aren't much fucking better, as Aseful said, "We want documentation" for like EVERYTHING among other issues(my god the fucking petty arguments my mom overheard, like some of these higher admins were arguing about fucking FIEFDOMS not schools). Oh and that donation you raised for library books? Just gone. Fuck you dunno where it went. Don't look at the new car the Principal bought or the new bus for the football team.

So you have a good storm of number of parents don't care because their child is perfect(of course they are, THEY THEMSELVES are prefect, what do you mean my child is on the spectrum, are you saying I'M RETARDED TOO YOU LITTLE BI-), a number of teachers that don't care(treating the entire thing on the level of fucking DMV operations), and a number of Admin that also do not fucking care(save for not wanting to look bad and keeping the funding coming).

With everyone else that does care either too overworked, to ill informed, or too shut out to actually try to do anything.
