#harrybertoia asymmetrical chaise. Sculptural and comfortable. Genuine #knollstudio designed 1950 but not put into production ‘til 2003 when Bertoia’s family sold one of the two original prototypes submitted to Hans and Florence Knoll. It was only then that Knoll was able to use it as a model for production. It was considered too difficult to produce in 1950 and only the chairs were launched at that time. This example upholstered by Designers Guild is in stock now. A shelving display unit, in the manner of #jeanroyere ‘s YoYo designs. Very heavy but does dismantle. A high quality piece in zebrano veneer, cream lacquer and forged iron. We have tried to identify the maker but have not had any luck. Even the rear feet are circles. Probably late 20th century. Measures 228 cm. tall 120 cm. wide and 35 cm. deep. The suitcase retailed in Germany. In the UK imported by Venesta the use of the birch plywood became a hallmark of modernist design. Mies van den Rohe's MR Chaise, made by Knoll Studio. The frame is stamped Knoll Studio with Mies facsimile signature. The MR series of designs are some of Mies' earlier ones, and the chaise is thought to be inspired by 19th Century iron rocking chairs. The design affords comfortable support for legs, back and neck. In a pinkish tan leather, this is the original version, not the recent #bauhaus edition by #knollstudio which is a cut priced edition, identifiable by the somewhat flattened upholstery, and At around £10K new for this model, I’m not surprised they have released the Bauhaus edition, at around the £4K but you do get what you pay for.
