My therapist, who is probably in her late 40′s, told me she never pursued more artistic opportunities in her younger years because one teacher told her she wasn’t a “good artist”. Now after taking art lessons the past few years she is pursuing an art therapy license.

I sit here and sing along to my iTunes remembering how I was punished as a child in elementary choir class which made me avoid choir like the plague as I grew older. I took band classes instead, which I stunk at, making me feel like I would always be a failure musically. Today, I can for the most part carry a tune and even harmonize, and can make up songs pretty quickly.

We need to remember that the arts are meant to be FUN, subjective, and a form of self expression instead of telling kids they are “good” or “bad”, “talented” and “not talented”. The arts are not meant to be graded.

I once had a writing professor tell me my fiction writing was terrible and I should only write non-fiction.  Twenty years later, my fanfic has brought more happiness to people than her shitty now-out-of-print books. So… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Follow your bliss, babes. Write, draw, sing, play music. Don’t give a shit what other people say; don’t let them take away your joy. Express yourself. That’s what the arts are for. Creativity, in whatever form it takes, is beautiful. Joyous. Incredible.

My grandmothers advice on reading: You’re never too old for a good book.

This was like a couple years ago? But I got her interested in the Raven Cycle series after telling her about them. I mean come on, it’s about a dead Welsh King, friendship, trees that speak Latin, etc. How could she not? So, she called the local library to see if they had them. However, when the librarian heard what series she was looking for the lady’s response was, “Uhh… those are books for teenagers…”

My grandmother simply responded with, “So? You’re never too old for a good book.”

So, no matter how old you are never let anyone feel bad for what you read. If you’re enjoying it then good for you!
