Jack picked up the small pine cone off his mother’s desk. There was a silver slik ribbon tied around it with three golden bells sewn in the center. Same as every year after the solstice. “Hey mom. who brings you these? You get one every year so I know it’s a gift.” 

Skadi had been sitting in her chair watching her son, “The king comes by every year on the winter solstice and leaves them for me. I have trunks full of them. For some reason I can’t bring myself to burn them.” Leaning back she continued, “When he would go on a journey and I couldn’t or wouldn’t go with him, he would leave me pine cones as a token. A way of saying he loved me and he’d return.”

He glared at the pin cone, “Why would he keep leaving you pine cones after what he did to you?”

“It’s his way of saying he still cares and he’ll be back. Yule never has said when he plans to return. It’s been the better part of four hundred years since I last saw him.”

Jack set the pine cone back down, “Mom, do you still love him?”

“A part of me will always love him, but that shouldn’t suggest I will ever trust him again. Not like I did.” Skadi put her hand on his, “It’s a complicated thing that I hope you never have to go through.” She smiled, “Enough of Yule. Christmas is a few days off and I’m sure North’s had a few requests for snow, lets see what we can do about that.”

“FAFNIR!! Get away from that turkey or so help me I will freeze your over-sized paws to the floor!” Jack huffed at the mooching snow leopard.

The large cat gave a growl then got off the large table in the middle of the kitchen.

Kimi blinked, setting the basket of potatoes and apples down. “You wouldn’t really, would you?” She turned her attention to Jack.

"Today I just might. I want you and mom to experience Thanksgiving and damn it these cats are not gonna get in the way of that.” He held his arms out, “And mom finally gave me free run of the kitchen! You know how long I’ve been bugging her about that?!”

The banshee giggled, “A while I’m guessing.”
