āspicy pillowā jokes aside, I think @flowerkroneāās tags deserve a serious reply:
#my old phone looks like this on my shelf lmao #im too scared to touch it to throw it away #idk what trash this even goes into when its at this point
The pillow-shaped object here used to be the phoneās battery. Itās not a battery anymore. Now itās a balloon full of corrosive, pyrophoric chemicals and hydrogen gas and itās one puncture away from burning your house down. I am 100% serious. You should be scared to touch it.
But you gotta touch it, because you gotta get it out of your house before the pressure builds up to the point where the balloon pops. This isnāt going to happen soon ā there is no need to panic ā but it will happen eventually.
And, indeed, it doesnāt go in the ordinary trash. You put this in the ordinary trash and youāre gonna set the garbage truck on fire. Donāt do that to the garbage collectors, their job is hard enough already.
The first thing you need to do is get a fireproof container. The most common household item that qualifies as a fireproof container is a cast-iron cookpot with a cast-iron lid ā often sold as a āDutch oven.ā Any other cooking container thatās unreactive, has a very high melting point, and has a lid made of the same materials will also work: enameled or stainless steel, Pyrex with glass lid, etc.
However: Do not use a pot with a PTFE-based non-stick coating. If the battery does explode, the fire will probably be hot enough to degrade a PTFE coating, producing toxic smoke. (Not that you should breathe the smoke from the battery fire either, but PTFE breakdown products are worse.) Do not use a pot made of aluminium or copper. The fire might even get hot enough to melt those.
Whatever container you use, you might have to throw away along with the phone, so donāt use your good Dutch oven for this. Go to a thrift store and buy a cheap one.
Once you have the fireproof container:
Gently pick up the phone and put it in the fireproof container. If possible, gently tape the phone to the bottom of the container to prevent it from bouncing around. Donāt put any padding in there, thatāll just make a fire worse if it does happen. Put the lid on and tape it shut.
Put a label on the container, something like āDEFECTIVE LI-ION BATTERY ā FIRE HAZARDā.
It is now reasonably safe to move the container around. However, if the battery does explode, the container is very likely to leak smoke and get hot, so keep it in a well-ventilated area and away from things that will be damaged by heat. Donāt leave it exposed to the weather, either.
You need toĀ find either a hazardous waste disposal site, or an e-waste recycler that will accept defective Li-ion batteries. I canāt help with that because I have no idea where you live.
However, your local fire department, if you have one, will probably be happy to help. Call their non-emergency number. Nothing is on fire yet, so this isnāt an emergency, but things that can easily start a fire are still within the fire departmentās responsibilities. Tell them you have a phone with a bulging lithium-ion battery, you put it in a fireproof container, and you want to know how to dispose of it safely.
If the fire department tries to tell you this isnāt dangerous or itās okay to throw it out in the regular trash (with or without fireproof container), hang up on them and write a cranky letter to your local government representatives, then keep looking for a proper disposal site.
When you do find a a hazardous waste disposal site or an e-waste recycler, call them and make sure they will take defective Li-ion batteries, before showing up. Thatās also a good time to ask if they will let you have the fireproof container back.

Reblogging because I would have had absolutely no idea what to do, either.
āvillain attempts to go back in time to kill superman as a small child, gets shot in the face by ma kent, who buries him behind the barn with the othersā would probably have niche appeal as a comic but i donāt care, i want it
The first time a man from the future showed up at Martha Kentās house, Clark Kent was two years old.
According to his birth certificate, anyway. She just kind of accepted that the details were a little fudged. Relativity, and all.
Maybe the stranger would have succeeded in whatever it was he wanted to do, except that he really did just show up. Appeared, like a ghost made flesh, right in the backyard. Clark, thank goodness, was out in the fields with Jonathan. He couldnāt bear to be alone, that boy, and they could never bear to leave him.
Which left Martha free to shoot the ghostly intruder in the face.
Martha had not always considered herself a shoot first, ask questions later sort of a person. But that was before she found a baby in a spaceship where her corn was supposed to be.
Theyād switch off, Jonathan and her, who got Clark and who got the shotgun. Martha got the shotgun more often than not. Guns made her husband uncomfortable. She was hardly a fan, but sheād always been a terrible pacifist. Too determined to defend herself.
The sight of all that blood and brain and bone was still nauseating. She compartmentalized, told herself it was no different from slaughtering a cow; didnāt think about riot gear or tear gas or the friends sheād lost or all the things sheād moved away from when her heart couldnāt take it any longer. This was different. This was her son.
She prodded the corpse with her foot. It remained a corpse. A real nasty looking corpse, all big and burly and holding a gun much too large. She didnāt like making assumptions based on appearances, but she didnāt imagine heād been coming for anything nice. She bent down to search his pockets, found a metal wallet and flipped it open.
Born 2018.
Well, hell. Wasnāt that just a kick in the pants?
Probably she ought to have been a bit more unsettled than she was. But sheād been waiting two years for someone to show up on her doorstep, men in black or UFOs or something. Hell, sheād half expected her sweet little boy to hatch into something worse.
Just because she brought home space babies didnāt mean she was a damn fool.
Jonathan had rejoined her in long strides, was holding Clark in such a way that he couldnāt see the corpse on the ground. āWell, shit,ā he said.
āEyup,ā Martha agreed.
āDonāt look government.ā
āNope.ā
āWe burying him?ā
āIāll bury him,ā Martha said, standing up. āYou get Clark inside and read him a book or something. I donāt want him seeing any of this, getting him messed up in the head.ā
āYou sure? Looks heavy.ā
āThatās why we have a wheelbarrow. Iāll stick him out behind the barn, might as well keep all our secrets in one place.ā
Martha had a long time to think as she dug a time travelerās grave. There were a lot of reasons someone might travel back in time trying to kill her kid. The first was her instinct as a mother, which was: he was a fucking asshole. Who killed a kid? Fucking assholes, that was who.
Now, it was also possible that her sweet little boy grew up to be some kind of space Hitler. She didnāt think sheād raise that kind of a kid, but she didnāt suppose there was any parent who set out to raise a Hitler.
Still didnāt sit right with her. She didnāt much like the idea of killing baby Hitler, either.

I feel like simply calling JK Rowling a transphobe isn't strong enough anymore. Like. This is not your grandpa calling you by your deadname at a restaurant kind of transphobic. This is her wanting to eradicate all trans people (with an extra special hatred towards trans women specifically). This is her trying just that by personally funding transphobic hate groups with millions to push around laws in the UK. It is not hyperbolic to call her a dangerous, genocidal maniac.
It's not about cancelling a problematic writer. It's about literally trying to save lives by denying her as much money and power as possible.
agreed. when you say "she's transphobic" people think she just said something misunderstood on twitter, and I usually don't have JKR rap sheet handy or memorized so I just look like an idiot
i mean its probably obvious but when u think about it the whole "well behaved women dont make history" applies like triply so to trans women like the only time a trans woman is in the media is to be demonized they always have these cherry picked examples of some random trans person doing something bad and they're like omfg these trans predators but like if you are "well behaved" you slip under the radar and dont trigger their confirmation bias you dont count towards them adjusting their priors the "well behaved" ones inherently do not make the news and so only the "bad"(whether its true or a fabrication) makes the news or goes viral so thats everyones image of trans people idk does that make sense??
Dehumanization includes anger. Removing our right to be angry, make noise, take up space- that's part of the goal, it's always part of the goal. You're allowed to be angry and rude and fart in people's subway cars. Don't let the demonization of your normal range of emotion cause you to amputate part of who you are.
i want a Superman story about Superman realizing she's a trans woman. how would she tell people? who would she tell? how could she tell them? through what possible ways would she transition? Kryptonian biology may not necessarily be compatible with human hormone replacement therapy and needles are certainly out of the question. if she figures it out, at what point does her presentation change? superman can't take a break, people need her, even if her haircut is getting awkwardly long and her body is uncomfortable to be in. everyone on earth knows who Superman is, knows her face. is her secret identity threatened if Clark Kent mysteriously starts to transition at the same time as Superman? if she only lets one be publicly out, which one? and what would it feel like to put on that costume -- in either case -- if so? if someone tries to attack her on the street, as Ms. Kent, how does she hide her secret identity? how would the world itself react to someone with the strength to juggle planets being a tranny? with her super-hearing there's nothing she wouldn't know about what people are saying, nevermind what's being written in the press. how does SuperMAN, one of the most definitive icons of masculine indomitability and resilience, cope with changing? would her strength, her confidence, her ability to do anything suddenly be used against her? why can't she be more like wonder woman? why is voice training so hard even for someone with super-ventriloquism? does anyone know what it's like to be able to run faster than a speeding bullet and leap tall buildings in a single bound but to not be able to find a cute pair of shoes that fits? to be indestructible but afraid to use a public bathroom? would even the most powerful person on earth not feel just as helpless as i do?
i want to stress that it is crucial, like genuinely imperative, for this story in my mind that magical super special magic sci-fi kryptonian HRT that instantly rewrites Kent's DNA does not exist. it is not on the table. the entire thing is that Kent would have to transition slowly and awkwardly just like everybody else while also bearing the nonstop pressures and responsibilities of being "The Man of Steel" to literally every single human being on the planet. she doesn't have time to agonize over whether her shave was close enough before leaving the house if a plane is about to fall out of the sky
again i think some people are fundamentally missing a key point. this would be a story about how violent of an idea it is that a woman cannot be "Superman" and "Superman" cannot be a woman, and the myriad social forces that actively and passively enforce this ideology on everyone, including the very real and very strugglingly transgender Kent. it's about the vulnerability and frustration of it all, it's about secret identities and shame and choice and the unfair burden of tact, and all the superheroics stuff would just kind of a framing device. i swear to god give me a two week vacation from work and i'd have a script written
When ur mutuals w/ some cool ass people rb if u agree
Whenever I replay fallout new Vegas I canāt stop thinking about how the game starts with you being shot in the head and thatās a big deal but then you spend the rest of the game getting shot by enemies, sometimes including in the head, and you just walk it off no prablem
This was one of my introductions to military history. I was 14 and haven't ever really looked back. Big fan of star forts and Vauban.
Star forts like this were constructed after gunpowder became common in warfare! The elevated position plus the angled walls were designed to make it harder to just blow a hole in the wall with a big cannon, which is what happened to a lot of pre-gunpowder fortifications.
Easily starved when surrounded, soldiers inside eventually revolt from hunger and probable disease when you block their waste outlets, then it's just a waiting game with the occasional skirmish, maybe start fires periodically in blind spots to diminish morale, steer everyone elsewhere and decimiate stores of food and other needs, like our ancestors did this shit on a near regular basis, grenades still exist, traps are simple to set up, like the answer is usually a good combo of these with capable people, and in a slight derailing, like the billionaire bunkers, they'll still need air from the surface and no matter how many redundancies they're still too frugal to put enough in place to make shit invulnerable, nothing is impossible to lay siege to when the numbers are so vastly different between parties
"anti trans bathroom laws negatively affect masculine cis women too!"
"youth social media bans are bad because they force adults to give ids to companies!"
can you care about the people who are most impacted by these laws for One Second please

Gold, Silver, and Bronze!š„š„š„
Now as sisters and with a complex sibling dynamic.
did you know 24k gold is so soft you can scratch it with a fingernail? Because bronze knows
iām speechless
This is how the system of white supremacy Ā operates. The media is used 2 create stereotypes like blk on blk crime. They need black men to fill jail cells for the Prison Indstrial complex
You know what? Iām tired of this. I do not know what exactly they are waiting for. I mean our government comes up with āreasonsā to invade other countries, such as Syria, like their government is allegedly violating human rights or something like that. but⦠I mean for other countries, they do not even have to go deep to bomb the fuck out of this place, they can just look at our media. And this has been happening to people of color since the media has existed.
Iāll never forget this šš¾
Did a research project on this in undergrad and the results are extremely alarming because itās not just in imagery, itās in language used even in the law making process and within our own communities in a completely different way than expected.

Finished the mass effect trilogy yesterday. Pretty good games. Big fan of the cute gay scenes and the characters and the way the story develops between games. Towards the end I was aching for more, which is a pretty damn good implication for a long rpg like this, especially when I was gaming so far in that the sun had long risen as I got to the credits. Story is kind of yank in its values, the gameplay is serviceable and the rpg elements mediocre but despite it all the well written characters and great voice acting made it a fun experience. Might replay it in like 5 or so years idk.
Characters who arent harry dubois but have the disco elysium skill system in their brains
yeah, uh, about your boyfriend. um, well, it's not that we haven't found him, but, er... it seems that he was tortured and brutally murdered by the artist yoshihide in an attempt to paint a rendition of the buddhist hell, as he claims to only be able to paint what he has seen. yeah, he's gone now. sorry.
