My first biology professor had an ‘inadequacy drawer’ full of things to remind him he wasn’t, in fact, the dumbest and laziest person to ever exist. It was mostly Darwin, notably these two bits:
‘But I am very poorly today and very stupid and hate everybody and everything.’
‘I am going to write a little Book for Murray on orchids and today I hate them worse than everything.’
“I am at work on the second vol. of the Cirripedia, of which creatures I am wonderfully tired: I hate a Barnacle as no man ever did before, not even a Sailor in a slow-sailing ship.”
-Charles Darwin on a letter to his cousin
Charles Darwin: unexpected depression hero.
I knew about “I am very poorly and very stupid and hate everybody and everything,” but not the others.
“I hate myself, I hate clover, and I hate bees” is A Mood.
My favorite Darwinism: “I am dying by inches, from not having any body to talk to about insects”. Hits me right at the center of my hyperfixated soul.

Rainbow flag colorpicked from the original 1978 flag <3
this is my favorite of all the rainbow flags because a) the stripes mean things: sex, life, healing, sunlight, nature, magic, harmony, and spirit. Sex (hot pink) and magic (turquoise) were more difficult colors to get which is why the standard flag is six colors, but those are my favorite colors! Both as colors and as meanings!
and b) we know for a stone cold fact that Gilbert Baker meant this flag to be for Everybody In The Family, which has gotten a little lost in the emphasis on individual flags for different identities, to the point where some people are starting to think the six-color rainbow is only for gay men
anyway thank you this was nice to see on a Monday, hello beautiful

i wonder if kids these days are still interested in picture books that pretend to be encyclopedias on fantasy things. i have a book about goblins sitting around here somewhere. just goblins doing goblin things.
I really hope they are
I truly hope they are
I have dragonology and somehow though secondhand, none of the little slips and packets are broken, so I’m waiting to hand it off to my nephew when he’s able to read.
what’s the goblin book op
Goblins the Outer Realms
It starts with an illustration of a well dressed and highly titled goblin ambassador and a scroll addressed to the reader. As a kid i kind of believed it. its full of all sorts of information about the goblins of Grrym.
with entire pages filled with illustrations and descriptions of creatures.
that fold out into large four page diaramas of these very creatures in the world itself.
and even entrys on strange magics and the lore of magic that goblins themselves practice.
some pages even have small flip out panels with text so you can look further into whats going on in a scene like the great goblin city.
and grand illistrations of major events that accompany important storys like the story of rainbow gate. which is noted to be the only surviving peice of art depicting the destruction of the gate that once connected our worlds some 65,000 years ago
And finally a list of do’s and dont encase you encounter some of the various creatures of Grrym.
I highly recommend trying to find a physical copy of the book if you can. its the kind that needs to be handled with the utmost care and has so many knooks and crannys in it you’ll spend more time searching the book itself than reading it.
