i'm reading this paper on supplication (particularly in homer) by john gould and although he only touches on this in a footnote it's about achilles and lycaon's meeting in the iliad so of course it's got my ears perking up like a retriever's

gould lays out the xenia process of an outsider going from xenos (stranger) -> xenos (guest) -> philos (friend), using odysseus in alcinous' court as an example. then he touches on how lycaon pleads with achilles to spare him by reminding him of when he was achilles' captive and they ate bread together, and gould points out:

Note that though Achilles does not accept Lykaon's supplication, he nevertheless addresses him as philos (II. xxi 106) after being reminded of the common meal.

ie this bit that always sends chills down my spine:

"Come, friend, you too must die. Why moan about it so? Even Patroclus died; a far, far better man than you."

before killing lycaon who's still unarmed and on his knees.

gould's perspective makes it even creepier! the thought of achilles acknowledging the rules of xenia even in a captor/captive dynamic, respectfully addressing him as a friend, and then very deliberately disregarding those rules because he can't suffer a (half) brother of hector to live. oooh the texture

In the interest of documenting more VM tags I went through my pieces as well-

2001, same tag is on Velveteen Gather JSK and Rose Romanesque skirt/bustier

2004, same tag on Ribbon Mill Cache OP and Therese Corduroy OP

2005, Ophelia Ribbon OP (same tag on rose and Bordeaux colorways)

Rococo Bouquet tag- this one is in the bodice lining down by the waist as well. Unfortunately not sure of the exact year, it’s either the ‘22 or ‘24 release but I’m not sure which.

Lastly the most mysterious and beautiful (imo) tag- this whitework embroidered crown one, found in a Ribbon Long Underdress from 2020 and the 2025 Rose Gobelin Tapestry capelet- but the JSK from that set has the regular ‘new VM’ tag that all my new Classical Dolls (and my Elegant Lacey Ribbon Pants (2014)) have:

apple strawberry shiso tea + lavender ice cream

#:0 #fond fond memories of a hot summer day in paris on my summer art course in 2017 #had an outdoor class at the luxembourg gardens; took a break for lunch and went with my friend to get ice cream at an ice cream stand #at the edge of the park. one scoop of rose and one scoop of lavender. the first time i’d seen floral ice cream flavours!#it was so hot the sweat was tickling my back and my ice cream was melting faster than i could eat it and the sky was so blue and the grass #so green and the metal of the chairs we sat on so so hot and my friend’s hair was blonde and shone like a smooth tulip petal under the sun.#idk. visceral memory. many of those from that summer course! like getting caught in a torrential downpour one evening #and deciding to wait under an awning to wait it out except. it did not stop. had to run back to the airbnb when i started seeing the #water level rising on the street. or how after class one day my friend and i hit up some of the eng second hand bookshops #and we browsed books for like an hour before parting ways. and i was so distracted reading my new book that i got on the metro #in the wrong direction and only noticed 2 stops later!#if im remembering right the book was clark’s the nude. which remained influential to me for the next 5 years so!#anyway idk why I remembered all that! saw lavender ice cream n it was like a vault had opened

being a casual, relatively uninvested visitor (of the lurker variety) to the g*nshin lore subreddit is like. oh interesting theory i never considered that angle but it actually makes sense and has given me lots to consider. oh this take is a bit outlandish but yknow what the supporting evidence using various in-game and real life sources kinda makes it stand up though i guess we’ll have to see what comes of it. oh i totally disagree with this theory but i can see where it’s coming from and it’s well argued/presented. oh this theory is… just a complete misunderstanding of an in-game source which is now being presented as irrefutable evidence for a theory that otherwise just boils down to a crack headcanon. ok.
