on the topic of disabled characters, though, i think a LOT of artists give characters mobility aids that their character wouldn't actually benefit from using.

i'm sort of having a mild brain fog moment rn so i can't fully articulate what i'm on about, but i think a lot of able-bodied artists view things like canes and crutches as interchangeable. and they often don't know enough about the wide range of mobility aids to make an informed decision about what their character might actually use based on their disability

i also think that aids like walkers and rollators are sort of viewed as "cringe" on some level, and many people view them to be "just for old people," so many artists will opt for giving a character who has full-body pain and fatigue a cane (which, in many cases, can potentially WORSEN full-body pain) instead. and a lot of people don't realize that most wheelchair users are able to walk, so they don't consider it an option for characters with chronic pain

idk it's kind of frustrating. i've genuinely never, ever seen a character that uses a rollator before. not once. i cannot name a single one. i know of multiple ocs who are described to have full-body pain, dizziness, and fatigue that are drawn as cane users and are never shown with wheelchairs or walkers, though

it's also sort of sad? i've been diagnosed since i was twelve years old, and i only heard of rollators LAST YEAR. and that was only because i saw one irl and immediately asked what it was. i wonder how many disabled people out there don't even know it's an option solely because they're completely underrepresented online and in media

if you're a creative with a disabled oc, PLEASEEE check out this link. it's a very nice and detailed guide for telling which mobility aids suit someone's needs best. it's incredibly important to make the right choice for your character! mobility aids tell you a LOT about someone's lived experience. picking the right one will communicate to your audience #1 what your character goes through #2 that you UNDERSTAND what your character goes through!

suicide is a horrible thing but i dont think the response to attempts should be restraining people and locking them in a hospital room for anywhere from 3 days to the rest of their life, depending on whether they can stop being suicidal or not.

and i dont think an isolated unit with plastic furniture feels comfortable to most people. i don't think being confined into a chaotic space with no exit is conductive to healing. i don't think being cut off from almost all outside communication makes people feel safer.

i dont think it feels supportive to be surrounded by strangers with the legal right to grab you, pin you down, force sedatives onto you, extend your confinement, further isolate you in solitary, or take away "privileges" like: food you can/will eat, socializing, hobby materials, or even your own fucking clothes and underwear.

like, does any of this sound like caring medical treatment to you? do you really think a person who already wants to die is more likely to wanna live under those circumstances? why do you think it's so common for people to lie their way out of psych wards and then stop asking for help, even if they came in begging and pleading?

the institutional solution to suicide attempts is just gaslighting, violence, neglect, and torture. "its for your own good," no it isnt. that environment isnt good for anyone. its so no one has to actually sit down and talk to suicidal people, like we are real people. we are just overburdened by powerlessness.

suicide is our brain's last resort when we are suffering and see no end. more suffering or hardship is exactly the fucking opposite of what is needed. psych wards cannot avoid this or soften it with 5-10min conversations with psych ward staff or generic group therapies.

soteria houses on the other hand, are much closer to a healing environment. they are peer ran, home-like, autonomy-based environments that people with schizophrenia can go to for residential mental health care. so:

instead of psych professionals providing psychoeducation on "the right/healthy way" to think: peers and patients help each other by sharing unique coping skills, making art, learning new hobby or job skills, active listening, and having group conversations about mental health. they also dont usually use psychiatric medication (like antipsychotics), and patients still recover.

now which sounds more caring to you:

1) a suicidal person is admitted to a ward against their will, goes into fight or flight on arrival, is restrained, isolated, sedated, and monitored 24/7 by staff (even in the shower) for the rest of the day: or,

2) a suicidal person accepts a referral to a soteria house, goes into fight or flight on arrival, is calmed down by peers, invited to a social activity on site, and hangs out with a new friend for the rest of the day.

because i think the answer is pretty obvious.

unfortunately i dont think its queerbaiting if the creator is just so terminally heterosexual that they never remotely considered the same gender relationship their show is centered around could be read as romantic. it is deeply painful however.

By definition you can't accidentally queerbait. Queerbaiting is specifically using a same sex pair from the show to market the show to queer audiences with no intention of ever following through on a romantic relationship.

There is officially licensed Destiel merch signed off on by Kripke. Teen Wolf had a commercial with the actors for Derek and Stiles draped over each other talking about being "on a ship." Both shows actively used scenes between them as marketing while actively mocking fans for wanting them together. Sherlock has multiple characters refer to Johnlock as a couple, including characters we're supposed to believe are never wrong about human behavior and pushed those scenes in marketing. Then they acted insulted when fans saw them as a couple.

That's queerbaiting.

Done on accident it would just be queer subtext. Done because they had no other choice due to censorship is queer coding.

The specific meaning of the word is really starting to get lost and it's a pretty important one to keep accurate. It describes a very specific phenomenon that was done repeatedly and maliciously for decades and is meant to examine that specifically.

Doing it on accident sucks, but it isn't a tactic of capitalism intentionally intended to suppress queer representation while making money from queer fans.
