shoutout to the people who were traumatised from bullying just for being neurodivergent
we deserved better.
opened an epub of “unmasking autism: discovering the new faces of neurodiversity” by devon price and got punched in the face by the first paragraph. off to a great start
“Parents or grandparents who themselves have Autism spectrum traits dismiss the child’s complaints, claiming that everybody suffers from the social stress, sensory sensitivities, stomach issues, or cognitive fuzziness they themselves experience.“
this is hysterical to me because i read out a list of autism traits to my mother while fighting to get assessed and she said “well if that’s autism then i’m autistic too” with a straight fucking face
im calling myself out on this one
i get that were trying to destigmatize people with low/no empathy but can we pls not bash on people with disorders who cause them to be apathetic?
were trying to make a safe space and destigmatize disorders. not stigmatize things for the sake of putting others in a better light.
Just for once I’d like to tell the gate agents and flight attendants that my folding wheelchair is going into the onboard closet and not have them tell me there’s “no room”. Bitch that’s a wheelchair closet, not a “your bags” closet. Move your damn bags where they belong.
Ok, so according to my friendly aviation expert, this is a Big Fucking Deal. In fact, if an airline argues with you about putting your wheelchair in the wheelchair closet or even suggests there may not be room, unless there is already another passenger’s wheelchair in that closet, they have violated federal law.
CFR Title 14, Chapter II, Subchapter D, Part 382, Subpart E, Section 382.67, Subsection (e)
“As a carrier, you must never request or suggest that a passenger not stow his or her wheelchair in the cabin to accommodate other passengers (e.g., informing a passenger that stowing his or her wheelchair in the cabin will require other passengers to be removed from the flight), or for any other non-safety related reason (e.g., that it is easier for the carrier if the wheelchair is stowed in the cargo compartment).”

This is hugely important because it means that if this happens to you, you should report their asses to the DOT. Why? Because these statistics are published every year for every airline, and the airline gets a huge ass fine for every violation. If we want to see change, we need to make airlines literally pay every time they treat us this way.
@annieelainey you should share this with your followers! This is important info!!
To my mutuals on wheels, print out the law before you fly and whip it out at the gate if they don’t accomodate your wheels.
Thanks a lot for posting this, bro! Flying while crippled is already difficult enough without people pulling this kind of shit. Also, make sure that if there is a piece of your wheelchair or something important missing off of it, that you make a big fucking deal out of it! I’ve had pieces fall off of my wheelchair and nearly lost a decoration I had on it that meant a lot to me because people were careless with my chair. Don’t let them mistreat your wheelchair.
Non-wheelchair folks:
Now that you know, speak up.
You never know when you’re going to see someone who needs an ally.
Imagine if, instead of buying NFTs, those people “adopted” wild animals, zoo animals, or animals in rescue and rehabilitation and get to help great causes and conservation AND get cute photos and stuffed animals and updates about the animals they’re supporting.
Imagine if all the money that went into mining cryptocurrency and buying NFTs went into general conservation efforts instead, if it was used to help our planet instead of destroy it more.
Exactly! Instead of an NFT linked to an ugly computer generated image or art stolen from someone else, you get a certificate with a photo of a polar bear and a cute stuffed polar bear to cuddle with, along with the knowledge that you’re supporting efforts to protect arctic ecosystems and endangered animals :)
Everyone wins! Unlike with NFTs, where nobody wins.
Good news: World Wildlife Fund allows you to do exactly this! There’s a bunch of species to choose from and the plushies are adorable.
Many organizations run off desperately needed donor support!! If you are interested in symbolically adopting an animal to support their care, consider:
Born Free USA- Adopt an Animal
Primarily Primates- Sponsor an Animal
Center for Great Apes- Adopt an Animal
International Primate Protection League- Adopt a Gibbon
Oklahoma Primate Sanctuary- Sponsor a Resident
Primate Rescue Center- Become a Primate Pal
CARE Baboon Rehab and Sanctuary- Adopt a Baboon
And there are many more facilities in need of support out there!
Consider making a donation in Betty’s name to honor her 100th birthday 🎉
EDIT: Consolidated this into my own post! Here is a(n ever updating list) of reputable centers that help birds of prey! Please consider supporting these people if you can!
my life with ADHD
This is very true and a great post.
But low key makes me think about how people with adhd have been raised their whole lives to value a day based on what they accomplished vs what they experienced
I think your point is excellent. But also consider:
That list might say things like “Paint a picture. Go birdwatching. Finish that great novel I started reading. Call my grandma. Learn to bake a cake. Visit my sister. Play piano.”
For me at least, the good/fun things are harder without meds too. I can have the best intentions, but following through is hard.
LOUDER for the people at the back
THIS.
Yes, I support people who self diagnose.
I support people who don't have the money for a diagnosis.
I support people who are too young to speak to someone for a diagnosis.
I support people who are unsafe and cannot pursue a diagnosis at the moment.
I support people who identify with the symptoms of a disorder and just starting to learn about it.
I support people who cannot get a diagnosis for whatever reason.
I support people who won't get a diagnosis due to the stigma surrounding it, and/or the repercussions they would experience if they had a diagnosis. Like fear of being institutionalized against one's will.
I support people who do not share the status of whether or not they have an official diagnosis with others. You have a right to your privacy.
And for whatever reason. Official diagnosies are really hard to get and I don't blame anyone or think anyone is lying if they cannot receive them. I think self dx is just a stepping stone, but for a lot of people, they are unable to reach that final goal of official dx.
You are not a liar or a faker if you self dx.
Reblog if you support self diagnosis.
Quick Update (nothing special)
Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I was so busy over summer at placements that I wasn't really on tumblr much/at all. Now I've started back to uni and I'm 4 days in, 6 lectures behind. It is pretty busy, plus I haven't really got that stress motivation kicked in yet to study, but I'm starting to feel it. I was really hoping not to fall behind this year, so we're off to a good start! Plus, I'm kind of slaughtering myself with work at the weekends, so I can't catch up then. You know, I even bought a gym membership last week because I thought I would go 3-4 times a week and I haven't managed to go once yet. Hopefully I can salvage it over the next week or two then get my life running a bit smoother.
Reddit’s nursing forum makes for some pretty grim reading.
The latest bullshit Texas is pulling!
I wish more people got this because some ‘low-empathy’ people are the most compassionate and sympathetic in the universe, and I hate it when that’s taken to mean ‘unfeeling and probably hostile’ when nothing could be further from the truth
Or, as my dad put it,
Sympathy: I know how you feel Empathy: I feel how you feel Compassion: is there anything I can do to help?
Sympathy: that sucks bro empathy: I feel that compassion: want me to send you some puppy and kitten pictures to make you feel better?
Posts like this make me feel so much better. It always seems like society treat responses to others pain as though empathy is the most important kind. I am around 85% compassionate and this post helped me not feel like I am a monster because of that for once.
Fucking antivaxx parents
Idiots.
At least their kids didn’t inherit the stupid Gene.
