MASQUERADE! paper faces on parade.
awaken.
the voice seems familiar, but somehow unknown. where does it belong? was it masculine or feminine? where did it disappear to? eyes flutter and eventually open to see no one is in the bed in which they fell to sleep. instead, they rise in what appears to be once lavish bedrooms of an ornate and seemingly endless mansion. however, there are now cobwebs in the corners and sheets thrown over the mirrors.
there is a haunting feeling in the air.
as faces peer from their rooms, through either the windows or doors, it quickly becomes obvious that everyone seems to be in the same circumstance; confused as to how they arrived in such a place and adorned with a mask. not just any mask, mind you, an enchanted one which seemingly cannot be removed.
a piece of parchment in a rich cobalt blue levitates near the wardrobe. written in a shining silver script are the following words:
welcome. please join us in the ballroom for the masquerade. all hallow's eve at sunset.
there is no signature to speak of, nor any further indication as to who could possibly be behind this. the mystery hangs thick as mist in the air. there are no clues at all save for the various visages that can be seen throughout this otherworldly estate.
a little girl with curling black hair laughs as she skips with gleeful delight down the corridors, and a man with wolf claw lacerations too deep and neck bent at incorrect angles lurks near the garden. while another man, drunk and head covered in blood, stumbles towards the kitchen doors.
there is a stuffy looking lady staring down her nose at everyone who passes and scoffing as if nothing could meet her standards in the attic, and a man shadowed by dark hair, raging and screaming, throwing furniture and books and attempting to hit anyone near him in the library. a pristine and polished woman just outside hisses disapproval in a foreign tongue.
a sweet looking nanny continually cleans the toys of the nursery while a woman with an accent as thick as her woolen jumper tries to get her to stop fussing, and a handsome young man in fine business clothes shuffles cards in the smoking room. perhaps the most upsetting of all is the very face of a living woman disappearing at the top of the stairs.
it is enough to make ones head spin or perhaps that is due to the mere anticipation of this ghastly ball.
happy haunting, one and all!
