like its not outright addressed but he has used panderises magic without noticeable issue outside of saying the wrong spell, had a grandfather who knew the actual magic spell for imprisoning the gin in the chalice thing, and his grandma use to tell him stories at night about mermaid cities, along with him being able to easily unencrypt magical locks and codes like the huntsclans teleportation thing and pandora’s box

it was all but stated outright, spud just hasn’t gotten the chance to properly learn real magic as he’s been actively hiding his intelligence and thus also his capacity to properly learn magic, though he’s also drawn to it like with fu’s magic potion ingredients
