i am Very Aware of these tropes but i haven't read a lot of zutara fake dating. feel free to share your recs!! i'd love to read them

I think I have found my "Zutara niche" of fics

To be precise, it is more that I found the types of fics that don't draw much of my interest.

When reading it, I found that I enjoy full canon divergences, where the author takes control of the reins of the plot and makes their own thing. Mainly, I don't see much appear on fics that is just "insert this moment in book 3." They are not book 3 rewrites. I like those. But more that they are just canon, but adding a minimum of Zutara twist to the plot. Like, Stories where Zuko and Katara need to survive in the Fire Nation after the Eclipse invasion fails are some of the narratives I enjoy following.

I noticed that I read a noticeable amount of "Arranged Marriage" fics, but not because of the arranged marriage part, but due to the inherent fact they are full rewrites of the plot. I do enjoy a lot more stories where the author takes atla and makes whatever they want with the tools they were provided by canon.

If I had to pick a "favourite plot type," I would say Fire Nation Katara. Either from Arranged Marriage or Water Tribe Ambassador. I really enjoy seeing Katara having to traverse the Fire Nation high court drama.

Also, Bloodbending. I love the stories where Katara has to deal with Bloodbending and the moral and sometimes psychological effects of Bloodbending. I think Salt and Scales has Bloodbending as vaguely vampiric, which I enjoy a lot. It's mostly the struggle Katara has when wielding that power and if she "gets drunk on it," or if she can control her drive and not succumb to it.

Another aspect that I enjoy reading is the "Zuko is bad at communication" trope. Not that he is shy, but that he is bad at transmitting his feelings with what he says, either due to his tone or due to cultural differences. I think that is best seen in "Arranged Marriage" fics where Zuko fakes his consumption night with Katara by spreading his blood on the sheets.

Katara assumes Zuko dislikes her to the point of not wanting to touch her, but in reality, Zuko is conscious of the fact that the marriage was forced and that Katara does not want to be there, so he tries to keep his distance and not get involved with her.

Stories where the War is fully removed or the Avatar does not exist are also interesting to follow. Removing the war allows for different conflicts to be explored without that "timer" in the background forcing you to move the plot along, and without an Avatar, there is no "savior" to fix everything.

Of course, they would cherish the relationship that they forged together through adversity, mutual respect and trust.

Of course, they would come to realize that the reason they both ran with reckless abandon to save the other during the final Agni Kai was because maybe their friendship had become something more.

I mean, it only makes the most sense narratively.
