i love how katara goes from disliking zuko to being his ride-or-die bestie in the span of 2 episodes. I feel like they probably had some off-screen bonding moments at the ember island beach house.

So the scene in the movie where Katara gets mad at the new guy thinking she is too week to join the adventure was totally a missed opportunity for Zuko to have to hold her back from getting all up in that man’s face and potentially attacking him, which means I had to re-draw the scene for it to happen.

The traitor and the failure: why Azula gave Zuko a chance

Ever since that one exchange between me and @avatarsymbolism, I’ve had the idea to make this particular post. I’m afraid I hadn’t paid enough attention to this topic until then xD so thanks to that blog for making that certain post, because despite my attitude, it actually brought something essential to light that I hadn’t been all that attentive about.

We’re always told, as writers, that good storytelling is achieved through the mechanism of “show, don’t tell”. Curiously, though, there’s a lot of telling in ATLA. It’s easier to focus on what a character says than on his actions, especially for a younger audience, I think. Therefore, it’s also easier to focus on what others say about a character too… which is often the case with Azula.

Too often we forget this clever girl is only fourteen-years-old, that she is but a human being underneath all her flawed perfection. It’s easy to forget it because of what we’re told about her, because of the things she does that reinforce the preconceived ideas that we have about her, ideas that we obtain through Zuko and Iroh, first of all.
