February 4, 1945. Smoke rises in the City of Manila.
Tondo was the first to burn. In Intramuros, at around 3:00am, many residents of the Walled City were forced by the Imperial Japanese squadsto leave their houses. The men were all herded into Fort Santiago, while thewomen and children were moved into San Agustin Church and monastery. Husbands and sons—these men in Fort Santiago—would later on be executed.
In the morning at Binondo, several civilians noted that many Japanese marines transported five-gallon gasoline cans, gunpowder sacks and other explosives on the ground floor of China Banking Corporation, Crystal Arcade Building and Yutivo Sons Hardware Building. They deliberately set fire to these buildings, burning as it went, spreading to almost all the buildings on the northside of the Pasig River. It effectively delayed the northern Allied advance for two days.
The Imperial Japanese forces were determined to slow down the liberation force. By 11:00 a.m., the Ayala Bridge, the bridge that connects Ermita and San Miguel, were effectively destroyed.
Refugees—the burned, the wounded, those who wanted to escape, all poured in at the Philippine Red Cross at Gral Luna and Isaac Peral Streets (now U.N. Avenue). Many schools across Manila began to be converted into make-shift hospitals. These would all soon be targets of Imperial Japanese atrocities. The civilians wait impatiently for rescue, as uncertainty crawls in with the approaching sound of shelling, machine-gun fire and explosions.
No electricity, no water, no food supply. And then war. One would understand why civilians were getting impatient.
In the evening, the Japanese suddenly set fire on the buildings in Ermita using drums of gasoline. Anyone who escapes the fire were shot at or bayoneted. Anyone.
The trudge of the Filipino guerillas and American forces on the city was grueling. A unit was fighting the Japanese resistance at FEU while another unit reached the intersection of Avenida (Rizal Ave.) and Azcarraga Streets (Recto Ave.)
When the resistance was overcome, the Allied forces effectively liberated Bilibid Prison (another American internment camp).
It was an important gain, but a small one nevertheless. The prize was the liberation of the entire city. MacArthur thought that resistance would be quickly crushed.
But he was wrong.
Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the 1945 Battle of Manila, the gruelling battle for the liberation of the city that lasted from February 3 to March 3, 1945.

True Friends
Nowadays, it is so hard to find true friends. Friends that are always there for you through thick and thin, friends who takes insults as a sign of ultimate friendships, friends where when you fight: you will make-up eventually, friends who accepts the whole you, friends who will tell the utmost truth whether it is ugly or nice because they really care about you, friends who you treat like your siblings from another mother/father or other crazy legit, friends who you can open up to and not spread your secret to others, friends who are not using you for their selfish motives, friends who are really trustworthy, friends that you are comfortable hanging-out with, friends who comforts you through dark times and celebrates with you through triumphs and etc.
Honestly, when I have that kind of friends, I would do the same thing to them because true friendships must have a give-and-take relationship.
It is so sad to face that kind of reality where it is so hard to find true friends. I also keep bearing in my mind that no friend is perfect, so love and accept their imperfections and make your friendship stronger than ever as possible.
I am still thankful that I still have that of friendships and I treasure that always. Many people think that I am a anti-social freak but what matters is that what you think about yourself and how will you change yourself for the better. Be with those people, your true friends, be happy with them, and be thankful for them. Inspire them and let them inspire you.
In my experience, reality has a fun way for to meet those people who will really be there for you in your life and when you found them don't let them go for they will not let you go too because you have that bond that is super unbreakable. :)
People Insulting Your Successes
In life, whatever you do, you will ALWAYS BE JUDGED! And yes, also in your successes! I sometimes can't believe that people will go that far and make that kind of mentality just to weigh you down.
Some people will say horrible things whether you are physically or not physically around them and it is kinda depressing at first. Instead of you feeling happy and enjoy with your endeavors, you feel sad because of what other people say! It deteriorates your self-esteem.
I learned that it doesn't matter. I learned that you should focus on those people who support you in your successes and comfort you in your defeats. I learned that it is okay to feel the pain for this pain can be converted to a strength in due time for you to prove yourself that you can get through it and be stronger. In short, life will always be better and it will come around eventually.
For I smile and laugh even I am currently push away the pain until that pain completely fades away. For be humble, honest, and contented so that you will have a more productive and happy life. For success isn't always rainbows and roses at at the same time easy to achieve but it is a reward and a glorious fruit due to heart-willed labor, hard-work, dedication, perseverance, and all things wonderful that you should be proud of. :)
