BIOGRAPHY
adriana was born and raised in aurora bay to a working class couple whose marriage was troubled from the start. her mother was only 21 when she had adriana while her father was already nearing her thirties. growing up, she remembered her father always came home reeking of liquor and the scent of unfamiliar perfume while her mother pretended like everything was alright to create an illusion of stability for their children.
her mother remained composed, devout and with unwavering faith. church was a constant in their lives, and by the time she was old enough to understand the words in her prayers, she had already internalized the church's teachings. she learned about devotion, sin, and the roles expected of men and women in a household: the husband as the provider, the wife as the caregiver. these ideals painted a clearer picture of why her mother tolerated the cracks in their family for the sake of holding them all together. adriana vowed to herself that she would never be like that. but life happened.
during her teenage years, she found herself in her first relationship. considering that she didn't grow up with the best example for a love affair, it made sense that she attracted the wrong kind of guy. drawn to danger, she fell for a boy whose world was a swirl of drugs, alcohol, and recklessness. though it was destructive, it felt thrilling and all consuming. but then she met esma, his best friend, and started hanging out with her more when she moved in with him.
at first, she was suspicious of the girl living with her boyfriend, but soon enough, that jealousy turned into feelings that she couldn't quite fathom. she was inexplicably drawn to her and not in a platonic way. despite the teachings of the church, adriana found herself falling for esma. and soon enough, the two started sneaking up behind her boyfriend's back and although adriana wanted to break it off with him, she couldn't find the words to do so. being with esma was like playing with fire and she knew that she was going to get burn someday, but she didn't expect it to be in the form of a phone call from her boyfriend's father about him getting killed in a car crash.
the news shattered her. grief, guilt, and shame tangled into something unbearable. she mourned the boy she once loved, tormented by the fact that her heart had already moved on. but the real wound came after, when esma vanished without a word, leaving adriana to face the wreckage alone.
still in disbelief that esma would just leave her like that, though she knew deep in her heart that there was always a chance the other girl could do that, adriana packed some of her things to try and find the girl in places they've talked about before. maybe something bad happened to her, maybe she didn't mean to leave like that. she was still in denial, but with limited resources, she had to stop just after a few months. she returned to aurora bay to finish high school and well, her grades were barely passing. it was actually a surprise that she got into the community college after all.
while studying in the community college, she also took part time jobs since her father refused to pay for college. he always taught her that if she wanted something, she needed to earn it first. so though the tuition fee was considerably cheaper than those from universities, her student loans were starting to pile up and she has no way to actually pay for them, especially when the picture perfect family her mother has been trying to keep up was starting to crumble.
that's when she heard an idea from one of her classmates. honestly, it was meant to be a joke but adriana took the idea to heart. the sugar baby lifestyle. this time around, she took advantage of her youthfulness and played the part easily. it was a hit and miss at the start, but she then started connecting with benefactors, some seeking companionship or someone to accompany them to private events, others offering financial support with minimal expectations. not every arrangement was romantic or sexual; in fact, many were rooted in mutual agreement and emotional distance, a boundary adriana maintained to protect herself as well. whenever she felt like she was starting to cross some lines, she leaves before they can offer her more to stay. after all, this was all meant to be purely transactional.
but not everything went according to plan. she eventually found herself entangled in a relationship with a married man. when she got into the arrangement, she already knew that he was married, but his wife was always out of town due to her work which left him lonely. and soon enough, their arrangement blurred into something resembling a family. adriana was invited to his house when his wife was away and she even cared for their children, becoming a fixture in their lives. slowly, she began to slip into a role she never intended to play, one that made her feel, perhaps for the first time in a long while, like she belonged.
that was until his wife returned unexpectedly and discovered the affair. in an instant, everything collapsed. the man who once whispered affections into her ear now denounced her, painting her as a seductress and homewrecker. the scandal rocked the small town, especially given the man's influence and reputation. at twenty-three, she packed her things and left aurora bay behind without any intention to go back.
she moved to los angeles in hopes of starting a new life for herself. with a degree in broadcast journalism in hand, she hoped to find a fresh start, but reality quickly sobered her dreams. the city was full of ambitious hopefuls, and opportunities were scarce. waiting tables became her lifeline and when that wasn’t enough to keep the lights on, adriana returned to the only world that had ever offered her financial stability, the lifestyle she once tried to leave behind. unlike aurora bay, los angeles was a huge city and there were far more people who are looking for that kind of connection, so it was easy for her to settle back into being a sugar baby once more.
this went on for a couple more years until her younger sibling called her to tell her the news that their father is dead. stage 4 lung cancer, undetected until it was far too late. he had deteriorated quickly, and now their mother was inconsolable.
even though she holds no affection for her father, her mother was a different story because she did her best to still raise them in a good household. despite the cracks in their home, she had done her best to keep the family whole, to raise them with love and dignity even when their father wouldn’t help. so, she returned to aurora bay to help her settle things, but she cannot return to that house anymore. luckily for her, her current benefactor has a house in aurora bay drive that they weren't using so they let her stay there to house sit it as well.
thankfully, she found an alternative. her current benefactor with more properties than they could occupy owned a house on aurora bay drive. it sat empty, unused, and when adriana mentioned her situation, he offered it to her without hesitation. she could house-sit for as long as she needed as long as their arrangement remains. for now, she's been back in aurora bay for six months and she has yet to decide if she's here to stay for good.
