Hi!

I'm Advocadot (Name is dumb, but I made it when I was a lot younger and I'm going back to it and sticking with it. I stand by it)

This is my blog to obsess over stuff. I am a fan of a lot of stuff, most of it somewhat niche, so I like sharing, learning, infodumping about the stuff I like so much. Can't really do that cause I got niche interests so this blog is to get all of that out of my system!

Literally ready to interact with and respond to anyone. Would be happy if someone messaged me to talk about any of my obsessions or just in general idk. I will not be bothered. (In fact, I will be very pleasantly surprised that someone actually wants to speak with me lol)

Lord of Mysteries (CHECK IT OUT. CHECK IT OUT. CHECK IT OUT. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. It recently is being adapted into an anime, but I read the light novel and it's sooooo good. Just check it out and talk with me about it pleasssse.)

Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (Read the Manga/Webcomic, really good)

Others are sub-obsessions, but these are at the forefront of my mind right now.

I checked Spotify today and noticed a new feature that lets you DM people. I tried it and saw a list of "suggested friends", most I recognized, but a few I couldn't place. Based on the music shared (it shows every single link you've ever sent that someone has opened, as long as they have a Spotify account), I realized some of these were people I know from Discord. I don't reveal my real identity on Discord, but occasionally share music in servers or while gaming. I've always kept Discord anonymous, and Spotify has never been a "social" app for me. But now it seems that anyone I've sent a Spotify link to, if they also have an account, can potentially find me, which means they could discover my full name and other account info. It's a little alarming. Just something to keep in mind if you share music in servers or subreddits and want to maintain your privacy.

Source identifiers are used to track your activity on a site. Where you came from, what device you use, and even who you talk to. Whether it's written clearly in the url or tied to a random string of characters, it's assigned to your activity. When you send a link containing a source identifier to somebody and they click it, it signals to the website that you two are connected. And that data goes right back to the website operators, and thus their advertisers. Whenever you select "share" or "copy link" on a social app or website, it creates a link like this. If you give even the smallest shit about online privacy, it's important to remove them. Everything after the "?" symbol can be removed without issue, especially sections starting with "si=" or "utm_source="

it is worth noting that some links, such as unshortened youtube video links, do use the ? to distinguish unique pages -- for this example, youtube videos use "?v=" specifically. learning which sites use this method of generating unique links for legitimate (ie non-tracking) purposes, and learning to recognize it based on context for new/unfamiliar websites, takes a little bit of practice; you just have to keep in mind that not every piece of a url after a ? is trying to spy on you... only most of them.
