well﹒﹒ the time has officially come! hotd s3 premieres on hbo﹐ and i just wanna say a few things before i inevitably spend the next several weeks yelling into the void﹒﹒ >﹒< first and foremost﹐ if you're team green and believe aegon ii was the rightful heir over his half-sister﹐ rhaenyra﹐ you'll always be welcome on this blog﹒﹒ ⸜̑⸝͂ ♕ and secondly﹒﹒ plot-wise? i'm going into this season with absolutely zero expectations because i already know i'm going to hate most of it﹒﹒ lols﹒

that being said﹐ i simply cannot resist watching my favourite team be moody﹐ emotionally constipated sluts in gorgeous costumes﹒ everyone on team green is ridiculously beautiful﹐ the cast is insanely talented at their craft﹐ and i'm especially looking forward to seeing our beloved prince regent at harrenhal with my girl﹐ alys rivers – my witch queen﹒

it's honestly extremely baffling to me﹒ the show has convinced such a massive portion of the audience that team black are unquestionably "the good guys"﹐ that rhaenyra is some flawless feminist icon who can do no wrong﹐ and that anyone who disagrees simply hates women﹒

except ! that's not what the books say﹒﹒ at all﹒ rhaenyra is not daenerys﹒﹒ she never was﹒ i genuinely don't understand why this fandom keeps trying to turn her into the next dany when they're fundamentally – at their very core – different characters who want completely different things﹒

daenerys consistently wanted to break oppressive systems﹒﹒ rhaenyra didn't﹒ rhaenyra believed that she deserved the iron throne because she was the only exception﹒ she wasn't fighting to change inheritance laws for every woman in westeros﹐ she wasn't trying to create equality﹐ and she definitely wasn't some champion for women's rights﹒

rhaenyra wanted power only for herself﹒ those are two completely different things﹐ plain and simple﹒ she never argued that daughters should inherit equally after her﹐ she never challenged male-preference primogeniture beyond her own claim﹒

she simply believed the rules shouldn't apply to her﹒ that's not feminism﹐ that's exceptionalism﹒

and that's absolutely okay ! female characters don't have to be feminist icons to be considered as interesting or likable﹒ but what annoys me is when people rewrite her entire character into something she simply wasn't (and yes﹐ i am absolutely side-eyeing the fuck outta emma d'arcy!)﹒

and while we're talking about succession﹒﹒ whether people like it or not﹐ male-preference primogeniture was the law in westeros﹒ yes﹐ many lords swore oaths to rhaenyra – that is a fact! however﹐ they also swore those oaths before aegon ii was born﹒ once deadbeat dad viserys had a legitimate son﹐ many lords believed those earlier oaths to rhaenyra were superseded by centuries of succession law﹒

you can absolutely argue that those laws were unfair﹒﹒ i agree! but pretending they just didn't exist because you don't like them doesn't suddenly erase them﹒ that's why the realm split﹒ people also love to say﹐ "well﹐ viserys named rhaenyra his heir!"

a king making a declaration doesn't automatically erase centuries of legal precedent﹐ especially when most of the nobility don't agree with him﹒﹒ that's the entire constitutional crisis﹒

also ! viserys didn't exactly help rhaenyra﹒ instead of spending years preparing rhaenyra to govern﹐ to rule an entire kingdom﹐ teaching her how to build political alliances﹐ strengthening her claim after aegon's birth﹐ and making sure the realm would actually accept her succession﹒﹒ he did absolutely nothing to help and prepare his supposedly favourite "only child"﹒

rhaenyra herself certainly didn't help matters either﹒﹒ did she? she left king's landing for dragonstone so she could go and pop out even more bastards with her uncle-husband (yes﹐ both aegon iii and viserys ii are technically bastards!)﹐ distanced herself from court politics﹐ assumed everyone would simply honour decades-old oaths forever﹐ and seemed genuinely shocked when many great houses didn't﹒

she became complacent﹒

i'm not even trying to sound mean﹐ but fr﹒﹒ how stupid can you be!? i guess being a pretty privileged princess has its perks and allows you to remain happily unbothered and unconcerned about your claim cause daddy said so﹒

meanwhile﹐ team green spent decades preparing﹒ they built alliances﹐ they secured powerful political relationships﹐ and they understood how important appearances were! the greens crowned aegon ii publicly before the people﹐ had him anointed by the faith﹐ blessed by a septon﹐ seated upon the conqueror's throne﹐ wielding the conqueror's sword﹐ wearing the conqueror's crown﹐ has the conqueror's name﹐ with the support of the smallfolk behind him! symbolism has always mattered in westeros – just as legitimacy mattered﹐ appearances mattered﹐ and team green understood that!

another thing that constantly gets ignored is how history actually remembers these characters-- rhaenyra is remembered as a princess﹐ not a reigning queen﹒ aegon ii is remembered as king﹒﹒ and that is a fact﹒ just as alicent hightower and helaena targaryen – aegon ii's mother and sister-wife – are remembered as the rightful queens in the histories!

even rhaenyra's own son﹐ aegon iii﹐ never rewrote the official succession to proclaim his mother queen after his own accession﹒ and technically speaking﹐ aegon iii succeeds aegon ii because aegon ii named him his heir before his death﹒ that's simply what happened﹒﹒ it's canon﹒

and listen﹐ people are free to interpret the morality of the dance however they want﹒﹒ genuinely﹐ i encourage it! that's what makes this tragic story so utterly compelling and fascinating! ꒰ ´͈ ᵕ `͈𓏼 ྀིᥩ꒱
