What’s your take on the Palestine situation as a political science grad and middle eastern woman
there is a significant imbalance and abuse of power — international human rights law and UN agreements have been repeatedly violated. news outlets have made it out to be this stressful, complicated, complex issue, but i'll break it down for you like this: this is modern day colonization and genocide. there is no “conflict” because there is no “both sides” to the issue. plain and simple, there is one side with an incredible amount of weapons, power, and global influence which is never held accountable for its actions, and then there's palestine. this represents a humanitarian crisis. isr*el is the oppressor, palestine is the oppressed. these human rights violations are outlined by the human rights watch organization as “The Crimes Against Humanity of Apartheid and Persecution", “Intent to Maintain Domination”, “Systematic Oppression and Institutional Discrimination”, and “Inhumane Acts and Other Abuses of Fundamental Rights”. source in the link above with detailed info.
PLEASE READ before i get into specifics: there are good people and bad people in every country. there are good arabs and bad arabs, there are good israelis and bad israelis. any mention of isr*el is referring to the “state”, not the general population. i condemn those who group all jewish people and all israelis together and refer to them as bad people or derogatory terms, this is simply untrue. there are many groups of israeli and jewish people who are organizing against what their government is doing, and who disagree with the settlements, human rights violations, and violence. i am not defending the “state”, only the innocent, good people because as an arab, i’ve seen these blanket statements thrown around. i’ve rejected them irl and i feel it’s my responsibility to say something about it here, too. if you have this view, please, i encourage you to take a look at the sources linked above and to reach out and have productive conversations with members of your community. there are better ways to express your anger and disdain, this is unproductive.
one could argue: but palestine is sending rockets! yes, this is a fact, but considering the iron dome’s effectiveness (isr*el’s rocket/missile defense system—you can read up on it), the few attacks palestine resistance manages to carry out are either shot down or do very little damage in comparison to the massive firepower of isr*el’s to a state with no defense. think of it like tiny little pebbles compared to isr*el’s massive boulders. palestine does not have the budget of $20.46 billion dollars in military defense and spending that isr*el does. but it’s still wrong! absolutely, the taking of any innocent lives is not right. civilians are just going about their lives and don’t have a hand in major political moves, they don't deserve to pay the price. however, this is brought to your attention to further illustrate the point that the two parties are not on equal footing by any means. the data speaks for itself: 251 vs. 5,590.
completely innocent adults and children are being murdered, tortured, and imprisoned, electricity is shut off for most of the day, any aid or humanitarian help is blocked from entering, medical supplies and medical help is extremely limited (due to the blockades and also due to the fact that palestinians are barred from accessing certain [isr*eli only] roads), they are dealing with a water crisis, access to food is limited, and regardless of how many generations a family has lived there, isr*el will still force them out of their home. they are known to bulldoze families’ houses, torch crops, shoot parents in front of children and children in front of their parents, and intimidate and bully palestinians as if the mental anguish of being colonized and living in fear isn’t enough. statistics & sources can be found here.
the idf is happily livetweeting and admitting to their crimes, and this is all backed and cosigned by most of the developed world due to influence and and lobbying. its biggest backer ($146 billion to date) is the united states and this connection goes all the way back to the cold war, you can read up on that as well to understand the history and why their crimes have been and continue to be covered up by the international community.
anyway, i’m tired. i could go on about this for much longer but i’ve seen too many horrifying videos and read too many articles and i’m all cried out. my heart hurts the same way it did when i saw that video of a father protecting his son from isr*eli soldiers back in the early 2000s. if you’re feeling helpless like me, please read this article on how you can help and check out these links. i also encourage you to write your local representative/MP and encourage/pressure them to speak out and publicly condemn isr*el’s actions. attend your local peaceful protest and do so while taking precautions and with a mask on. i encourage you to think critically and consider the facts and statistics, not only in this situation, but whenever you're consuming media.
thank you for asking. free palestine. 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸
PLEASE DO NOT THINK FOR EVEN A SECOND THAT YOUR VOICE WILL NOT HAVE AN IMPACT THIS IS LITERALLY THE BARE MINIMUM
I'm sorry for putting this in the BLM and stop Asian hate tag but in the last few days posts tagged with "Palestine" have not been showing up.
today, may 15th 2021, marks 73rd year since al nakba, or “the catastrophe”, the 1948 forced expulsion of 750,000 palestinians from their homes in order to establish the state of israel. the nakba is ongoing and has not ended. at the moment, israel is committing massacres, war crimes and an active genocide of palestinians.
30+ families are facing forced displacement by israeli forces in the neighborhood of sheikh jarrah in east jerusalem. their houses are to be taken over by colonial settler organizations. [x]
gaza is being bombed actively in illegal attacks and that has been going on for six days. the number of victims is as of right now, evening of may 15th, 145 martyrs, including 40 children. israel dropped phosphorous bombs on unarmed palestinian civilians. white phosphorous is specifically internationally prohibited to use on civilians because it can melt skin and penetrate to your bones. white phosphorus burns are slow, agonizing, can cause organ failure. if you don’t die, you’ll live with holes in your skin for the rest of your life. this is a literal war crime.
pogroms are going on. israeli settlers and israeli police are going door-to-door in palestinian homes, breaking in, beating, kidnapping, burning, shooting every palestinian in sight. they are marking palestinian houses to attack at night.
words are not enough to convey the horror of what’s going on. IDF soldiers detaining sedated palestinian children are joking about selling them. israel bombed an orphanage. a palestinian father found out about his four children being killed by an israeli missile in gaza. a baby was the only survivor of an attack on his family’s house. a guy reporting casualties in a hospital in gaza ended up finding the dead bodies of two of his siblings. and more. watch these videos. see the atrocities palestinians endure with your own eyes.
palestinians have specifically asked for social media activism and coverage. israel cares deeply for their international image: they pay students to defend them online, an israeli airstrike destroyed the al jazeera office in gaza which also houses the AP and other media outlets. consistency in your online activism is essential. sharing videos and posts and photos posted by people in palestine of everything that is happening is essential. israel wants a media blackout. posts about sheikh jarrah are being censored, people have been losing internet in protest sites in the West Bank, there is a threat to israeli bombardment to the main transmission tower for internet services in gaza. by being constantly and consistently vocal, you are aiding more than you think.
the situation is not “complicated”. there is no “two sides” to take into account or whatever bs zionists are trying to feed you. on one side there are colonizers, settlers, protected by an iron dome and bomb shelters that look like hotel rooms, and on another a dispossessed people who are being pulled out from under the rubble because they do not have anywhere to hide from the bombs that are raining down on them. on one side you have people going to the beach and to brunch while crying to the media about the inconvenience they have to endure, and on another you have people who are defenseless, have nowhere to run, don’t have a roof over their head, who are going through a clean water shortage are being bombed a few feet away from those same settlers. israel has killed more people in gaza the past 24 hours than hamas rockets have killed in the past 20 years.
while boosting palestinian voices and sharing every kind of content you see capturing what is happening in palestine specifically from palestinians, please take this time to learn more about palestine, and more on how to help:
decolonize palestine is a website created by palestinians to debunk myths, explain history, answer FAQs, etc. please read thoroughly through it.
support the bds (boycott, divest, and sanctions) movement: an explanation of what it is and the official site to learn more. for example: ben & jerry’s is a company to boycott, as they actively support apartheid, and profit from sales in israeli settlements. also, in 2014, when israel killed so many palestinians it ran out of morgue space, they used ben & jerry’s ice cream freezers to store their bodies.
demand your trade unions to endorse bds.
protest israeli terror. a lot of protest are happening today on the occasion of the nakba.
if you are american, call your local state reps. demand they end all aid to israel. america gives 3.8 billion dollars each year to israel.
demand your governments to stop arming israel. materially challenge the ability of the occupation to continue attacks on palestinians. for example, today in livorno, italy, dockers refused to load weapons on ship destined to israel.
if your city is doing police exchanges with the IOF, demand they stop.
donate to the palestinian children’s relief fund, which provides free medical care and humanitarian aid to youth in palestine.
share the meal is an app made by the wfp and they currently have a campaign going on for families in palestine. a meal costs less than a dollar. please donate if you can.
center palestinian voices. muhammed el kurd (@/m7mdkurd on twitter and @/mohammedelkurd on instagram) from sheikh jarrah has been the main spokesperson of this violent dispossession on various media outlets. please watch his interviews and listen to what he has to say. here’s a twitter list to follow for live updates about palestine and the occupation’s crimes. please follow it. this post is only a general overview of everything that went on the past few days, it’s nowhere near enough to be informed.)
as someone who’s been involved in all kinds of pro-palestinian, anti-zionist activism for as long as i can remember, i don’t want to be too hopeful, but it feels different now. all israeli propaganda is collapsing. their narrative is not sticking anymore. people are becoming aware of its genocidal reality. please use your social capital and voice and keep doing so consistently.
wHY DOES THIS HAVE JUST 308 NOTES???? THE ENTIRE WORLD SHOULD BE SHARING THIS. CHINA IS LITERALLY COMMITTING THE HOLOCAUST, ONLY THIS TIME ON MUSLIMS AND Y’ALL ARE SILENT?
i have 495 people following me right now, including several mutuals. i better see y’all reblogging.
People might not be reblogging this because the first tweet makes unnecessary (and untrue) Holocaust comparisons. Taken from @nat_slay on Twitter (I don’t know the original source):
The “ways to help” info seems good afaik but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong there too.
As a Jewish person, I appreciate those saying that this is not okay and that it is misinformation. No, 6 million Uyghur Muslims have not been murdered.
And, as a Jewish person, I know that 6 million very well could be murdered. This is not another Shoah, but it very well could become another. As a Jewish person, I feel we must say “never again.”
Never again.
“Never again” does not mean “this event was so uniquely horrible, it could never happen again.” It means “this event was horrible, but not unique. We have to make sure it never happens again.”
Never again.
The Uyghur death count isn’t 6 million, that is misinformation. But “never again” means we have to make sure it doesn’t become 6 million.
If you are not Jewish or Romani, do not draw comparisons to the Holocaust. All that provides is shock value and misinformation. What you can do is support Uyghur Muslims.

As a German this makes me physically uncomfortable to read about, how have so many people not learned from one of the biggest mistakes we’ve ever done? How can this still be happening today?

As a Jew, an unfriendly reminder that Anne Frank did not die in a gas chamber.
THIS is how she died. This is WHY she died. This is how and why TENS OF THOUSANDS LIKE HER died.
Get your asses on those phones.
If I remember correctly, they moved all the kids to detention camps on military bases where the press weren’t allowed.
They started gassing the adults still in standard centers with disinfectant once the pandemic hit.
Tens of thousands of adults and children are unaccounted for.
These tweets are over a year old.
It’s only gotten worse and nothing has been done to stop it.
The media remains silent. The people are complacent. The government is complicit.
I’m sure everyone is sick of seeing political posts, this isn’t political, it’s a humanitarian crisis! And it’s not only happening “somewhere else” anymore!
Armenians are being attacked in the streets of my country!!Why is there not national outrage, or a movement rising up?? Where is anyone outside of the Armenian population screaming for equality? A genocide is literally taking place RIGHT NOW but you all would rather get upset and put your energy into candidates who are literally doing nothing of substance to help this situation while schools, hospitals and civilian homes are destroyed.
In 1915 no one cared about Armenia either, they watched as these same instigators marched women, children and elderly out into the desert with the sole intention of none of them making it back home, this is after murdering the men and those strong enough to fight back in front of their families. The term genocide was coined solely because of this tragedy! An entire culture almost wiped from the planet, and people still say we are overreacting!
Don’t allow this to happen again, don’t be someone who sits back as an entire country and culture are facing the threat of a SECOND GENOCIDE!!!! Please, wake up, do something, spread the news, because it could be me or my family being targeted tomorrow.
the term genocide was coined after the mass ethnic cleansing of armenians by the ottoman empire in 1915. think about that for a second.
i say this as the descendant of two holocaust survivors: it is vital to remember now that hitler rationalized the holocaust because no one cared about the armenian genocide, either. for once in history, pay collective attention before a mass tragedy occurs. (again. and again and again.)
I need every Nigerian and non-Nigerian across the world to TWEET/RETWEET and POST/REBLOG about #EndSARS to amplify what’s happening in Nigeria right now. The government ordered the military to shoot and kill peaceful protesters last night. Crimes against humanity are being committed against innocent civilians right now.

here, have some wilted asparagus at the cheapest low quality grocery story
THIS is why i get so angry when non-natives say, “just go to the grocery store! you don’t need to hunt such and such animal bc of _______ bullshit reason!” Like NO. it’s not as simple as that. going to the store ? this is what you see ^^^^ please educate yourself. I am so very tired of the ignorance and assumptions that all people in america have the same basic amenities. Also stop ridiculing NDN people who hunt their traditional way on THEIR traditional hunting grounds. whatever the “problematic” animal may be. Those animals were put here by the creator FOR indigenous peoples, to live belong side us in harmony and good health, and to feed the people when the time comes. ALL ndn people of the “americas” are hunter/fathered people traditionally. respect our ways of life or GTFO.

I feel like this article is relevant here, especially with that last comment:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4787000/Alaskan-boy-bullied-social-media-whale-killing.html
Be aware that price-gouging is enourmously prevalent in Alaskan Native villages too, so here comes this young adult who goes out and kills a whale the traditional way, all to feed his village!!! ONE SINGLE WHALE.
Which by the way isn’t even endangered.
And you know what the animal rights’ activists do?
They sent him death threats.
All over a fucking NON-ENDANGERED whale.
This man is a hero in his village, he fed everyone there for days. Below-working class Alsaskan Natives who otherwise would’ve had to travel hours to get to the nearest grocery store.
Entitled vegans always say “well why don’t you just go to the store and buy fresh produce?”
Because there aren’t stores where Rez Natives live.
And if you’re lucky, you’ll find shit like the images above, you wanna pay $30 CA for some fucking asparagus???
Unless you’ve seen the Rez life and how shit is, then you need to shut the fuck up and keep your entitled shit to yourself.
And not only food. Basic amenities like properly insulated/ventilated houses. Reliable water and electric. Postal addresses that don’t require a P.O. box. And in this age I’d say internet can be considered a basic amenity that a LOT of rez native houses don’t have. Don’t get me wrong, I love talking about food. But I feel like most posts like this get bombarded with food-based discussions and miss other equally important points.
Just let that sink in.
thats why the vietnam war was the last war ever televised
Chelsea Manning went to jail trying to show people the extend of the atrocities American commits overseas. I watched some of the leaked footage. I think some of the worst of it was a drone bombing of a wedding in Yemen, then a day later America bombed the funeral of those killed at the wedding. Ambulances and first response units (which are protected under international law), were being bombed. People trying to take shelter were being bombed.
And that’s just drones, which is to say nothing for the numerous illegal black sites America operates around the world. Or the effects of using white phosphorus, which will continue to burn as long as oxygen is present and melts human tissues. That was used in Fallujah, which was a blood-bath from start to finish.
Which is why I have zero trust in the military, both American and British, because this is just some of the stuff we know about.

Watch: The most wonderful moment of joy came when he entered a Nazi guard bungalow.
We are the last generation who can hear from these survivors directly. Do not take that lightly. Do not waste that opportunity. Do not forget your freedom isn’t infinitely guarenteed. And do not, do not, let it happen again.
Really truly, watch the video, reblog it. Teaching about the holocaust is so necessary for our generation before it slips under the rug and people forget about it.

Dude just stop climbing mount everest. just stop it. Wtf
Not sure if this is a shitpost but we really do need to stop climbing mount everest. It’s largely pointless and we’ve made a huge ecological impact of years from waste left behind from all exhibitions. Not to mention the economic impact on locals
people in the notes are trying to imply this is good, normal, natural, and not something to be discouraged, so uh… lets break this down
obvious warnings for discussions of death
pollution
there are mountains of literal shit on everest. i can only assume people forget that everest is freezing and so poop wont break down the same way as it will when youre camping (or that they dont want to carry bags of poo around). this contaminates glaciers which has began to cause damage to the water supplies of nearby local villages
similarly there are mountains of rubbish. in 2015, it was reported that yearly clean up efforts had removed 15,000kg of rubbish and 800kg of human waste from everest.
because of the high altitude, a bag of poo or rubbish becomes so heavy to carry that it would be deadly to do so.
pollution thanks to littering is a growing problem and one that is hard to fix because of the above point – “Even picking up a candy wrapper high up on the mountain is a lot of effort, because it’s totally frozen and you have to dig around it,”
tourist privilege
to the average english speaker, “sherpa” has come to mean guide, despite the fact it is a name for an ethnic group.
300 people have died on everest and the last year without a death was 1977. 111 of those deaths are people from nepal.
sad as it is to say, for tourism and money flow to keep coming in, it looks better for native guides to die than for the tourists to die. sherpas bend over backwards trying to help those they are assigned to
sherpas are often treated incredibly poorly by those they are assigned to, despite breaking their back (and risking their lives) to try and help
sherpas often have to support inexperienced tourists (who are on everest for some fuckin reason), making the already dangerous summit even more so. some of these tourists dont even know how to tie basic safety knots.
many sherpa guides work in the industry not because they want to but because they can make 10x the average wage in nepal doing it.
many of the deaths of tourists are down to doing extreme things for an ego boost, such as climbing without oxygen.
the corpses
should you die on everest you will likely remain there. “A dead body that normally weighs 80kg might weigh 150kg when frozen and dug out with the surrounding ice attached.” the risk to others isnt worth it, in most cases
furthermore, if you cant be found or your family cant organise rescue quickly, rescue may become impossible due to you literally becoming stuck to the mountain.
sherpas have reported how emotionally and mentally difficult finding these bodies is and plenty of them have died trying to bring people home
the difficulty in retrieving corpses means that many are left, mummified and frozen, in public view. it is common to find bodies when climbing which has proven to be difficult for many climbers
people who have climbed everest have gone out their way to say the media isnt being sensationalist about this, for once, and its as deadly and filled with corpses and rubbish as it is reported to be.
death is incredibly normalised on the mountain. a british man, famously, huddled with a corpse in a cave bid to survive. 40 climbers passed him and very few attempted to help, despite him being alive. why? most assumed he was a corpse and so didnt check.
this normalisation is why some corpses have gained names and become markers. green boots is the most famous, but the german woman and sleeping beauty are other examples. a stretch of the climb has been called “rainbow ridge” due to the bright colours of jackets belonging to corpses that poke through the snow.
tourism
more than 4,000 have climbed everest. while thats barely any compared to the overall global population, it definitely isnt the impressive, one of a kind feat it once was.
most people actually die AFTER getting to the top, not on the way there.
2019 was the deadliest year on everest since 2006, excluding years where deaths were largely due to natural disasters.
tour companies do not screen you for experience, anyone can sign up to go up mount everest. this means incredibly inexperienced climbers have become common, causing danger to themselves and others.
nepal also has no rules for who can climb the mountain.
until this year, the nepal government turned a blind eye to most of this. presumably, for them, the money income was worth it.
in 2012 it was reported that overcrowding was becoming a major issue, causing many to die that year. congestion caused by inexperience was blamed. nothing was done. in 2019 we heard the same story.
2019s viral photo of the crowd climbing. people died waiting in this crowd. people stepped over the dying and dead to make it to the top. congestion caused by inexperience was blamed, once again.
people fight to take selfies at the top
theft has been reported by climbers on the mountain
the demand has meant dodgy equipment has found its way onto expeditions. climbers reported oxygen tanks leaking and exploding.
psychology
people who have been rescued have been reported saying that they wished they had died; that the disfigurements to their body and the way such has changed their lives werent worth it
people have had their families die struggle never getting a body back
climbing over dead bodies, using them as markers, and even sharing a tent with one, has proven to be difficult for some who climb
the family of the man thought to be green boots has discussed how horrid it is to them that their sons dead body is posted online.
these thoughts were echoed by the family of the woman who came to be called the sleeping beauty.
you really think all that is natural and normal?
in what world is everest worth it
everest has become a colonialist playground. mountaineering is supposed to be about adventure, about conquering something very few people can, about athleticism and bravery. now, climbing everest is about rich people, many of whom do not belong on the mountain because they do not have the skills or experience required, paying poor local people to carry them up the mountains. if it really was about the adventure, you would go climb k2, annapurna, the mountains that arent tourist attractions (yet) . it’s not about adventure and challenge, its about bragging rights, and poor brown people are dying to drag your inexperienced asses up the mountain.
Nickelodeon have announced a plan to build an underwater theme park in Coron, Palawan, Philippines. They claim the 400 hectares would “advocate ocean protection,” however by building artificial structures they will actually damage and disrupt Palawan’s marine ecosystems - one of the Philippines most beautiful natural areas.
For a channel that targets children, this is unacceptable and sends a terrible message - to destroy the natural world and replace it with plastic and fantasy.
WE need to preserve what we have left and celebrate the beauty in nature.
If you agree, join Save Philippine Seas and 150,000+ others and sign the petition here: https://www.bataris.org.ph/petitions/no-to-nickelodeon-s-underwater-theme-park-in-palawan
This isn’t WoY related, but by god this is so messed up.
Nickelodeon, your most famous charactr is a seacreature, and you choose to destroy a part of a beautiful Philipine reef….to promote ocean protection?
Have you taken charity lessons from PETA and Autism Speaks? Kill what you promote to protect?
Fuck you seriously.
Guys, please sign the petition!
PLEASE sign the petition.
As a marine biologist, Stephen Hillenburg would have never approved of this :(
