i just realized all of the characters working for the dockworkers’ union have some variation of a white + red background for their portraits. evrart claire has the colors swapped, likely because he’s the leader of the union. white represents communism, red representing the union

there are two exceptions to this: elizabeth and ruby.

lizzy’s portrait looks like a very noticeable variation: there’s still two colors, but the pattern is on its side and (if you squint) sort of looks like bg color is tinted with blue. plus the red in the right bottom corner. foreshadowing? ruby breaks this pattern entirely with the black/orange. i think this represents how she’s broken away from the union and from all of these sorts of groups bc yknow. she’s on the run ! she has no one left to turn to! no one to trust!
