“Who do you think would have brought that, Alex?” Heidi asked concerned, although something about her step-brother’s demeanour caused her suspicion. She gave Thad a look before continuing. “Is everyone else okay in there?” She asked Alex, nodding her head in the direction of the house. 

"Whoever, really.” Alex responded, matter-of-factly. Thaddeus nodded in agreement. “Who took the alcohol?” Alex asked. A moment of silence. “What do you mean?” Thad responded when it seemed as if no one else would. “Into the car. Who carried the alcohol?” Alex repeated the question in a bit different style. Another, shorter while of silence. “Pete.” Thad stated. Alex nodded, as if he were thinking about it. “I actually have no idea.” Alex said, to answer her question. “I haven’t seen anyone for a while.”

Heidi felt her face turn red at the sight of her step-brother. Her breathing was heavy, both from the surprise and her previous activity. “Alex, what the hell are you doing?” She asked through gritted teeth. 

"Well, I was originally hoping for some alone time with a relaxing ciggie and nice glass of wine” he stated, now a bit less bothered, as such a thing could only be shocking for a while. He sat himself on one of the chairs, crossing his legs and reaching for the cigarette he had put behind his ear. “ –– but, since you're here, as well, I figured you could tell me about your night?” he lit the cigarette between his lips.

The second kiss took her by surprise. Her lips met his again, first kissing him sweetly but then harder. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling her body closer to his and deepening the kiss. 

Thad was just about to suggest going inside and getting a room, when the patio door magically opened and an Alex stepped out of the darkness. Thad, in slight panic, jumped away from the girl, his eyes wide, resting on Alex’s seemingly startled expression. Before he could manage to choke out any words, the other boy raised his glass of wine. “Cheers.”

He listened to Alex’s story intently, letting out a genuine laugh at the end. He looked over at the boy, wondering if he’d be able to say it. “I think I’m gay,” Wallis mumbled, before turning over on his side. He couldn’t look at Alex. Whether it was the ayahuasca or the fact he was finally able to say it, Wallis felt his eyes start close and himself drift into a sleep. 

"I think you might be, as well.” Alex told him gently, a small laugh following the words as he watched the boy’s figure. When he didn’t get a response and noticed that the other’s eyes were closed, his face ever so peaceful, Alex kinda just smiled to himself, getting to his feet and leaving the boy to sleep.

Wallis nodded solemnly, not surprised but building up to his next question. “Was just wondering,” he shrugged, letting a silence cover the room. “When did you know?”

Alex took a moment to let the question sink in. "Actually, I suspected pretty early, but.. I guess I didn’t fully realize until.. end of middle school? Freshman year of high school? Something like that. I actually had a girlfriend at the time. She was a genuinely nice girl. Theresa was her name. I remember––” he paused, only to let out a breathy laugh at the memory. “One time we were sitting in her living room, and we were watching something, like a culinary show of some sort. And she then, out of sudden turns to me, looks me in the eye and goes “Alex, I think you’re gay.”” he looked over to the boy. “And I was like “Hell yeah, that sounds about right.””

Wallis looked up from his pillow at Frank, surprisingly he was smiling for a change. He laughed a little before it faded into silence. He looked up at Alex, a question on the very tip of his tongue. He couldn’t quite convince himself that he should say anything, but he wanted to so badly and he thought that this might be his only opportunity. “Alex, you like boys, don’t you?” He asked rather innocently. 

Alex raised his brows slightly, not necessarily surprised by the question, as it seemed pretty frequent. At this point he was used to it. He looked over to the boy. “That’s correct.” he confirmed. And usually that was it. Most of the time it was just people asking because they thought he looked gay. And that was completely fine. But Alex felt like with Wallis, there was more to it than just that. “Why?”

“The room is spinning,” Wallis muttered, hugging the pillow closer to him and burying his face into it. “Are you better?” He asked, although it was muffled by the pillow. 

"Oh, for sure.” Alex threw out there, with underlying playfulness in his tone. “Can’t be walking around, getting myself into trouble when I’m supposed to be taking care of you.” he added. “That’s irresponsible.”

Wallis let Alex help him. He felt worst once he was lying down, like the whole world was spinning. He snuggled up into the large pile of pillows. He hummed into the fabric, nodding. He was okay enough and actually felt comfortable. “Can you stay?” He asked feebly once he realised the boy was about to leave him. 

Alex seemed pleasantly surprised by the request. His brows rose, as he moved himself away from the frame. “Absolutely.” he closed the door, heading towards the bed. He sat down on the edge of it, next to the boy. He looked down at the other, a gentle smile appearing on his lips. “Are you.. better?”

Wallis let Alex lead him away, not really knowing where they were going. He was a little slow and clumsy on his feet, causing him to lean into Alex as they walked across the room to the bedroom. He felt strangely more comfortable with him once they were alone in the room together, like there were no prying eyes watching them. 

Alex wrapped his arms around the other, leading him into the room, where he helped the boy sit down on the bed. “We’ll take these off.” he mumbled, more to himself, sorta like a mom while helping the boy kick off the shoes. “And we’ll take this here.” he took the glass from Wallis and placed it neatly on the nightstand. He then kinda proceeded to help him lay down. Once that was done, Alex stood up straight. “Is this good?” he gave the boy a sincere smile, before turning to the door. “Let us know if you need anything.” he told him, leaning against the frame.

Wallis took the water, nodding thankfully. But he didn’t drink it, he felt some comfort from just holding the water in his hands. “Yeah, that would be nice,” he muttered, still feeling pretty shaken. 

Alex nodded his head, getting to his feet. He stubbed out the cigarette in the ashtray on the table, putting his wine aside as well, before walking over to the boy. He helped the other get up as well, before looking around. Alex decided that it would be inconvenient to drag the boy all the way upstairs, so he kinda just began leading him slowly towards the bedroom on the ground floor, not hurrying too much, kinda just letting the boy decide on the pace.

Wallis screwed up his eyebrows, unsure but why the other boy meant by that question. It dawned on him that even though he may have been referring to his pounding heart and sweaty palms, Wallis had felt like there was something wrong with him for a lot longer than before tonight. “Every context,” he uttered. 

Alex let out a thoughtful sigh, his eyes focusing on the glass of water he had brought with him. He held out his hand, passing it over to the boy. “Here.” he offered, with a small smile. His eyes watched the other for a moment, unsure how he could help. Alex figured a while ago that lot of this could be a side effect of ayahuaska. “Do you want to lie down?”

Wallis shifted awkwardly in his seat, sitting a little upright and rigid as the other boy sat across from him. He thank god that he didn’t try to sit too close, he was sure his heart would have exploded if he had. “No,” he admitted truthfully, shaking his head. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me.” He met Alex’s eye, unable to tare his gaze away once he had. 

Alex seemed to put a lot of thought into the boy’s statement, as his eyes scanned his face, as if for any further information. “Alright,” Alex began, resting his thumbs underneath his chin, sorta just holding his head up as he slightly furrowed his brows. “In what context?”

Wallis wasn’t reacting well to the ayahuasca, not in the slightest. It could himself sweating and his heart racing. He felt paranoid, like he was being watched. His eyes scanned the room frantically and finally landed on Alex. It didn’t help his paranoia in the slightest, if anything it increased his heart rate. Wallis quickly looked away. 

Alex acted surprised at the boy’s worried expression. He slowly scanned the room, but everyone seemed to be busy doing their own thing, so Alex kinda pulled himself out of his trance, approaching the boy, but with certain distance, not wanting to make him too uncomfortable. He grabbed a bottle of water from the table on his way there and sat himself on the other end of the couch, crossing his legs, before turning his glance to Wallis. “Hey,” he greeted, offering a comforting smile. “Are you well?” he asked, showing concern.

Alex had such a good time pretending he, as well, was on ayahuaska that he even began to believe it for a second. His body swayed gently in tact with the soft music in the living room, a glass of wine in one hand and cigarette in the other. His eyes opened slowly, scanning the room, before resting on the figure on the couch. Not quite pulling himself out of the trance, Alex flashed a sincere smile at the familiar face.

Penny had been in a strange mood since the morning after Pete’s party. Understandably so. Heidi felt bad for her cousin, she knew all she wanted to do right now was get back to San Francisco but something told Heidi that wouldn’t look good for any of them. Running out of town the day after a murder never looked good. They sat in Alex’s living area, Heidi sipping green tea and Penny staring at the floor, too deep in thought to say anything. “We should do something while we’re still in Georgia. All of us. Get a group together and do something, I mean,” Heidi tried to sound nonchalant, like the idea had just come to her in that moment but she’d actually been trying to bring up in conversation all day. 

Alex was sat down with a newspaper and cup of tea. He looked to both of the girls, listening to Heidi’s words. She was right, he decided. He nodded his head. “We could get out of town.” he suggested, a moment of thought before he seemed to have an idea. Alex sincerely reached his arm to Heidi and let his hand rest on hers.”Rent a summerhouse. Heids–– we could show them the cabin.” he smiled to her warmly before turning to look to Penny. “I don’t remember–– have you been?”

Frank stood still on the stairs, looking down at the scene in front of him. Everybody looked broken. The seriousness of the situation finally hit him, he placed a hand on Noella’s back, guiding her down the stairs. Pete watched his friend put his hand on his other friend and the feeling got inside is stomach wasn’t exactly… normal. He felt sick, angry and confused. It was the hangover he told himself. Penny still clung to Thaddeus like her life depended on it, which right now it felt like it did. “Thanks, Ellis. For letting us know,” Pete said politely, unsure what else he could say at this point. 

Ellis nodded his head politely, but didn’t really say anything until Noella approached. “All ready?” he asked and she nodded. He draped his arm over her shoulder, protectively, before looking over to the rest. “Take care.” he told them, before leading his trembling sister to the car. Thaddeus looked up, Penny still in his arms, glancing at everyone in the room, his fingers still tangled in the girl’s hair. Rick was silent, looking down at his feet. Alex had approached at some point, and now seemed troubled, as well as sincerely concerned. He walked to Thad and Penny, placing his hand on the other boy’s shoulder, before looking over to Penny. “Come on, we’ll take you home.” he told her, reassuringly.

Pete felt like he was missing something, a key piece of information that caused Alex to chuckle at something Pete didn’t see the funny side too. He chose not to question it, making a sympathetic noise before falling silent. The quietness was soon interrupted by the quiet moaning and the sound of the squeaky bed frame from Pete’s guest bedroom. “Sounds like somebody’s having a good night,” he commented bitterly, trying not to think about somebody having sex in one of his bedrooms.  

Thaddeus let out a low grunt, not necessarily in the mood for this. He moved closer to Pete, burying his face in the pillow. “Probably Frank.” he mumbled into the fabric. Alex, again, let out a little laugh, before exhaling. “Probably Frank.” he agreed, resting his chin back on Pete’s head.
