29/04/2022: I passed my viva! A few typos to fix but I'm almost PhDone 🌌
Viva prep #2: onto reading the next chapter. So far it's less rough than I remember. Have no idea what is considered "good academic writing." Or what is "good enough for a PhD." Maybe I'm out of practice?
Viva prep #1: Reading over the thesis and all I keep thinking is "who the hell wrote this and why am I reading it?"
Hi! Hope you’re having a lovely day💕 I was wondering where you get your keyboard and mouse from? They’re so cool!
Hi! Hope you are also enjoying your day/night wherever you are! It's a mechanical keyboard ordered from Amazon a couple of years ago. It was relatively affordable. Try searching "60% mechanical keyboard backlit" as it's not a branded one. The mouse is the same but the brand is Tecknet (try "Tecknet gaming mouse"). Had the mouse for about 4/5 years so not sure if it's still available! Hope that helps ☺️
25/02/2022: i submitted my thesis in December 2021 and finally have a viva date sorted for April. I'm definitely happy with my examiners though I have no idea whether I'll pass (and if so, how many corrections will be needed). Also not looking forward to all the prep work. But it'll be over either way!
hi, everyone!
I've been thinking about making a studyblr for a while now and I don't want to lurk from the shadows anymore :)
I'm Jay, a third semester student, linguistics and English literature, and - big surprise - languages are my greatest passion. I'm a native German speaker and learnt French in France where I was raised. Also, I've been trying to duolingo my way through Swedish and Russian
Some facts about me:
I love cacti, so far I've bought nine of them (rescued them from Ikea)
Beet root is my mortal enemy
I dance hiphop and love going for a run from time to time
Bunnies are my favourite animals
This account was made because I feel like I need the peacefulness of this community.
I'm afraid my general aesthetic isn't all that....well, aesthetic but I'll do my best!
Blogs that I like!
@marie-curie @catestudyblr @cheeringyouon @afrofuturiststudent @kei-i @my-study-world
And my special favourite whom I've been following from my other accounts for a long time: @tiredbiostudent
Thank you for inspiring me!
Hello! Nice to see another studyblr ☺️
24/10/21: last week I sent my supervisors a full draft of the thesis. They'll probably suggest various changes but I am out of energy and ideas. Sooo I have no idea what to do with this blog now that I've almost reached the end 😅
Finally have a full draft of the thesis. Yet I can't seem to write the abstract for it
10th of October 2021 // Starting this day with taking notes on the stories I want to use for the second half of my chapter. It's funny: when I first contacted my supervisor he said my project sounds good but I should narrow it down - this is why I have the tag spooky tree project, rather than "spooky plant project"! Since I am here, though, we have started to integrate more and more plants that aren't trees ... 🌳🌲🌱🌺
11/09/21: still working on the thesis... but I've stumbled into a career path that I kinda like and the qualification is not needed to progress. The PhD hasn't been worth the strain on my mental health either.
However, my intention is to submit something just in case I have a tiny chance of passing. It might not work out but I'm ready to move on
Accomplishing next to nothing, the grad student is still exhausted.
PREACH!
Hi! Prospective PhD student here, and you and I have similar studies!
Would you mind telling me what the funding is like in your program?
The schools I’m looking into say they fully fund tuition for PhD students, but does that really mean I wouldn’t have to pay for school?
A lot of schools don’t offer a lot of info about funding so I figured I’d ask you!
I love your blog and you totally inspire me ❤️
Thanks :)
Hi! Thank you for your kind message! The funding process varies a lot by country, and my experience is limited to England but usually funding covers tuition fees. I was funded through a national research council. Funding covered tuition fees and a stipend for 3 years (though I received a short funded covid extension too). The research council also had additional money for research trips, conferences, and placements.
Some universities offer PhD scholarships but they can be less generous or have limited places compared to research council funding (I think my school only offered 1 scholarship but there were 80-100 places per year from the research council!)
27/07/21: last night I somehow forced out a reaaaally rough plan so my chapter is still a mess but will be more organised at some point
26/07/21: this picture does not capture the chaos of editing. Finished a draft of the intro last week (too short, not good) and I have one week off from work. I'll spend some of it rewriting but no way am I wasting the whole week on this
