performative intelligence in academia, and life in general, honestly inhibits people from learning.

when you’re constantly expected to already know, or understand instantly, less you be considered one of those “less intelligent” types, you’re not going to get as detailed information as you may need

so if you don’t understand it instantly, or you don’t already know the only apparent options become:

let them know you’re not as smart as the others who are also pretending to understand the subject matter or … do not learn this subject matter and never grow from this point on this subject matter.

the fact that it’s so unacceptable to ask people for help in understanding things is damaging to … you know … actually understanding things.

like for people who profess care for knowledge acquisition they sure do a good fucking job at stopping people from learning.
