so hey im thinking of reading captive prince and was just wondering how explicit it is?? like in terms of how graphic the violence & sex scenes are??

i actually went through and made a screened version for a friend of mine who’s squeamish about (fictional depictions of) rape, and it’s not that relentless. it’s still horrible to read because there’s this pervasive air of corruption and violence, but it’s all implicit and tightly wound under a facade of respectability, which is the point; the threat exists constantly but is only brought into play a handful of times. it’d be up to you whether that kind of thing is going to really mess you up or not.

in terms of straightforward violence, there’s some corporal punishment and assassination attempts and it’s also, you know, it’s a war story. so lots of people and animals die, but it’s described fairly… “tastefully” (???) rather than kind of in glorious bloody detail, and since it’s not visual i don’t think the violence is so bad. it’s certainly nothing compared to modern war movies. in general, all the Bad Stuff that happens is not eroticized or written indulgently, but briskly, just enough to get that gut reaction of horror but not drawn out to the point of being intolerable, imo? but if you’re quite sensitive to violence, especially animal death, maybe give it a pass.

there are… three or four sex scenes between the protags, again, not written in lurid detail and mostly driven by the emotions. i really doubt the bedroom scenes will be a problem unless you’re quite sex-repulsed, in which case you should probably not read the books at all. (and they’re emotionally VITAL to the story! don’t skip them!!!)

if anyone wants that version of book 1 where i replaced all the rapey bits with summaries you can PM me or give me an email to send it to you at! the other books also contain a handful of instances of implied/threatened assault so keep that in mind if it’s likely to be distressing.

on a scale of 1-10 please rec the captive prince trilogy

solid 9, lost a point for the alienating cheap slave kink porno premise and the shortage of women

i mean the fucky aesthetic is holding a very thoughtful political romance inside it, and all the women characters that do exist are great, but damn it’s hard to rec the series without a long list of caveats because of those things. either of those could be a dealbreaker, and i wouldn’t blame anyone for it.

also big loud content warnings for sexual violence, abuse, CSA, and general corruption and treachery. bad things happen, ceaselessly, throughout book 1, though despite what you might expect none of those bad things are eroticized, and the series does a good job of resolving all that conflict and drama in a believable way so when the characters finally fall in love, you are right there with them.

but unfortunately it does take a lot of Dealing With Things to get through the series. BUT LIKE. I REALLY THINK IT’S WORTH IT, IF YOU CAN. it’s a very rich, dense narrative, but the writing is clever and unadorned enough to lead you through without it becoming frustrating or boring. despite the clusterfuck of trauma and betrayal that pockmark the series, the ending is wholly and unambiguously happy. and the romance is. oh my god, it is so good. it is so good. the happy ending is so bone-deep satisfying, because you come to admire the characters, and their joy is so utterly gratifying to see.

SO, Yeah, thats. a very short summary of my captive prince thoughts. if the question is “should i read captive prince”, i would say: no. but if you ask, “do you, phee, desperately want me to read captive prince”, the answer is yes. (please.)
