Get some extra classes with the 11-page Clean up your Acting supplement~
This tutorial is about acting for comics! Itās not a subject people talk about a lot, at least compared to art and writing, but Iād argue that great character acting is one of the reasons we fall in love with fictional characters⦠and horrible character acting is why we stop believing in the characters, the story, and possibly the creator?? Fortunately, learning to spot bad acting is an easy way to correct it in your own work.
I was maybe a little snarkier in this tut than I needed to, but weāre friends here, I donāt need to pretend with you that I love every work equally. What I really do love tho, is when people learn to turn their criticism into corrections, which is the whole point of making and sharing these tuts! I hope you enjoy it :] You can also check out a bunch of human, monster, and alien crab acting in my own comics The Meek and Mare Internum.
My recent tutorials on Tumblr:
coloring with masks
writing for webcomics
researching for comics
All of my tutorials are released in lower-res format to the public 6 months after publication at the Shingworks Patreon. You can access the full tutorial archive, as well as nearly 1.5 years worth of bonus content, by becoming a Patron :] The recent tutorial is about Worldbuilding, so feel free to stop by~
and! thanks a ton in advance for not removing my text <3
Whoa this is really great advice for artists and writers alike!Ā
Description: Making Representation Obvious
Sometimes you have to code characters, either because the terms they use to describe themselves donāt exist (like secondary world fantasy), or because they havenāt found the words themselves yet (undiagnosed illnesses and disabilities). But if at all possible, you should make it clear who these people are and own that youāre putting them in the story.
Even if you actively can say that somebody is part of a certain group, you still have to make sure youāre not -washing them in the narrative. Be it whitewashing, straightwashing, abledwashing, or any sort of situation where you say one thing, but the story itself doesnāt reflect that.
Here are some things to consider that will help you make it obvious thatā¦
This character is PoC
Describe:
Skin tone (just donāt use food metaphors)
Hair texture/colour (especially black hair)
Most commonly eaten foods at home
Microaggressions
Cultural clues that they would have (either assimilated or not, because both will have tells)
Their opinion of white people/things outside of their experience
This character is LGBTQA+
Describe:
Who theyāre attracted to (or lack thereof)/past crushes (or lack thereof)
Their circle of friends (seriously, we travel in packs, I know like five straight people)
For trans characters: hormones, binders, packers, breast forms, tucking. Also, for more subtle clues, pronoun asking, euphoria at gender affirming things (like them being proud of their particularly dapper, feminine, or āI have no idea what gender that is but I like itā style), dislike of off-gender things (like complaining about somebody getting them something that doesnāt match how they like to present)
The actual orientation that they are, for crying out loud
Their opinion of straight people/things outside of their experience
This character is disabled
Describe:
Their disability. Preferably in the actual labels, or make up your own labels for a secondary world fantasy
Any mobility, hearing, or speaking aids
Behaviours that come with the disability (ie- stimming such as rocking or flapping for autistic/ADHD people, navigating through appropriately wide paths for wheelchairs/walkers, sitting on one side of the group conversations to make sure their good ear catches it, etc)
Levels of aid needed and any accommodations
Avoiding things that trip them up (like somebody autistic not wanting to go where itās crowded, a wheelchair user avoiding curbs, a Deaf person making sure thereās a sign language interpreter at a concert, somebody with celiac avoiding gluten like the plague)
Plan cancelling because itās a bad day,Ā or having to leave early because the environment is bad
Medications, doctors, etc, if applicable
Self care rituals for after a long day or during a flare up
Their opinion of abled people/things outside of their experience
This character is mentally/chronically ill
Describe:
Their symptoms, from good to messy, consistently
Their energy levels, as many of us use the spoon theory
Self care rituals they practice during flare ups or after hard days
Medication, doctors, therapies, etc
Cancelling plans because a bad day came up, or having to leave early because the environment is bad
Triggers and their individual reaction to their triggers
Their opinion of well people/things outside of their experience
And so on. These lists are not meant to be exhaustive at all, but they are meant to get you thinking about how you need to go about describing representation.
One thing to note: you can go about establishing representation in one of two ways. Either have the characters noting their differences, or them nothing othersā differences. Neil Gaimanās Anansi Boys describes white skin when it appears, because within the narratorās world, black skin is the norm. But others note their own differences. Itās all about their character.
Either one requires a lot of careful thought and sensitivity readers, but both are valid* options for owning** representation.
Followers, feel free to add more!
*Do be aware that some groups are chronically under-represented when it comes to the actual word of their identity. Bisexual people hardly have characters say the word as their identity. Autistic people also hardly have characters say the word as their identity. Be very careful of not having characters talk about themselves if the group is prone to being coded but not explicitly represented
**You have to actually own it and say theyāre that when people put all the clues you left together
Thanks for reading! If you liked this content, please consider supporting me on patreon. Itāll get you access to a bunch of cool stuff!
Also make sure to do careful research on the real life struggles these minority groups face. Check and double check your sources. Learn about how to avoid info on these minorities that come from right wing and or Nazi groups. They can and will deliberately give you information that will cause these groups more harm. If you accidentally put information from outdated bigoted sources in your works while trying to portray these groups and you get called out, donāt ignore it. Always listen to legit complaints from the people in these minorities who are passionate about being portrayed respectfully. Also when youāre writing a trans person, donāt look for information on them from self identifying radfems, terfs, transmedicalists or truscum. They all have misinformation on what itās like to be transgender. And donāt believe the lie that trans people have to look a certain way to be trans when designing/describing a trans character. Cis passing trans people are a thing. I hope you donāt mind me adding this addition to your post OP.
Not at all! Source-checking is one of those critical skills you absolutely need when writing marginalized groups.
How do you do your glowy effects? Especially for eyes like in your Sea of Solitude painting. Mine usually come out dull and don't quite have the oomf I want them to have if that makes sense ^^; Love your art btw!
Glowing effects work best on darker images, heres usually how I do glowy eyes:
Done!Heres also a layer effect I sometimes use to do glowy dust for example.

Attention non-artists who commission artists: donāt fuckin do this???
Actually had someone do this to me too. Was doing a art stream, it took me over 2 hours to do his inked commission, he got a refund cause āit took too longā that he figured I wasnāt going to do it after I gave him the file.
Donāt do this. Do not.
Iāve had this happen to me with a $350 comic :/ I had already finished it, it was full color, 6 panels and had a full bg in every panel. I was lucky in that I didnāt spend him money yet, but it left me without funds. Iāve also had the above happen to me as well.
Donāt do this shit to artists. Weāre people too. Drawing for you is more than a hobby. Itās a job.
Use Paypal Invoices.Ā
I cannot stress this enough. That shit helps A LOT when it comes down to Paypal refunds/disputes. Thereās a description box that letās you put in what the product is/how long itāll take/yadda yadda, and then thereās another little memo box that only you and paypal can see where you can say itās a digital commission and doesnāt require shipping (So Donald Mcfuck canāt say that they never got their commission). And thereās also a box for your Terms & Conditions where you can say, if you have any conflicts/want a refund - email me, or you can actually tell the user that this is a digital commission and they wonāt be getting a hard copy of it.
ARTISTS. PLEASE USE PAYPAL INVOICES. it will SAVE you. And to: the people who do this to artists ā Fuck you. Itās okay if you change your mind and want a refund. But freaking TALK to us and let us know whatās going on. Let us WORK with you.
ALSO A HUGE TIP: Invoices paid will automatically set up a shipping notice which, if not fulfilled, can land you in SERIOUS hot water with PayPal. Since a lot of artists donāt print and ship the commissions, this is a huge problem.
However! Totally manageable. Just go to your PayPal, scroll down to find Seller Preferences
>> Shipping Preferences
>> Display Ship Button. Make sure all the boxes are unchecked. Then youāre all set!
As a big supporter of artists, donāt you ever fucking dare fuck over an artist like that. Like donāt. And if they take their time to do a good job, donāt shit all over them for it! Donāt be a fucking ass hole. Just donāt. These people put a Ā LOT of work and time and effort into their artwork. Just donāt be that guy. Often times these artists arenāt even getting what they deserve in compensation.Ā
I am very grateful my customers have been good to me, but Iām spreading the word.
Very important!
As a new artist, Iām very grateful for this post. Never knew this. Thank you.
Homies be careful!

things people do in real world dialogue:
⢠laugh at their own jokes
⢠donāt finish/say complete sentences
⢠interrupt a line of thought with a sudden new one
⢠say āuhā between words when unsure
⢠accidentally blend multiple words together, and may start the sentence over again
⢠repeat filler words such as ālikeā āliterallyā āreallyā āanywaysā and āi thinkā
⢠begin and/or end sentences with phrases such as āehā and āyou knowā, and may make those phrases into question form to get anotherās input
⢠repeat words/phrases when in an excited state
⢠words fizzle out upon realizing no one is listening
⢠repeat themselves when others donāt understand what theyāre saying, as well as to get their point across
⢠reply nonverbally such as hand gestures, facial expressions, random noises, movement, and even silence
*Disclaimer: Iām taking the term āBurn-outā kind of lightly in this post because if itās severe you should seek out professional help!*

Extra Advice
If youāre in middle of a busy school period; just stop. Thereās no point in forcing yourself. Just rest and if you want, tell your teachers/parents. My parents think iām superwoman and my teachers are snitches so iād rather not, but if you can trust theĀ āadultsā, iām sure theyāll be happy to listen to you.
Dance, sing, cleanĀ and/or scream your frustrations away. I do all of those (screaming when itās really too much) when iām mad at myself. I just keep myself busy with an activity that requires all my attention.
Listen to music that sound happy. That kind of music forced me to smile and not frown.
Donāt think 24/7 about what you have to do the next day or whatever. It just stresses you more and reminds you of what you still have to do.
Make a āpriorityā list and a āgoalsā list. Those are the only things you should sort out and focus on tbh
The moment I felt really relieved was when I was eating my favorite fruit, listening to Happiness by Red Velvet and watched the sky as I walked back home from school. I donāt know but that day was so mentally straining and doing that little thing helped me get over it. That was the day I really got over my burnout. Thatās why doing those small things might help you a lot.Ā
You can always send me an ask or start a chat with me! Good luck!!
