The Two Commanders: Remastered

Fresh off destroying the Reapers, Commander Shepard falls into a strange, medieval world where people mistake her biotics for magic. No-one knows who she is anymore, and neither does she beyond the title.

Knight-Captain Cullen has been a good templar for too long; being a good man feels far beyond reach. But his latest charge won’t stop talking at him, and some of it is starting to take root.

A slow burn of friendship, redemption, and eventually love, spanning from Kirkwall to Skyhold.

(AKA a rewrite of The Two Commanders featuring more character exploration, more belligerent flirting, and more of our Commanders.)

Chapters one and two, in which Shepard finds herself in trouble, and Cullen finds Shepard. So he's also in trouble.

The Two Commanders: Remastered — Chapter Nine

Chapter nine, in which Shepard resolves to get rid of Cullen. There's 200k words to go, so she probably doesn't kill him.

The second week of their journey passed largely without incident. Agata had resigned herself to her fate, sullen but not disruptive; Shepard was downright pleasant at times, although Cullen occasionally questioned her motive. Still, when she wasn’t needling him — or flirting with him, which she now did relentlessly and with a vindictive sort of glee — she could be entertaining.  Cullen had escorted his fair share of mages back to the Circle, but none of them had been quite like Shepard. She had an irrepressible fascination with the world, eager to learn as much as she could about Thedas; as he became more comfortable with her, and became sure their conversations weren’t a trap, he found himself returning questions of his own. She talked around anything she deemed too personal, and she had the tendency to be opinionated whenever they spoke of the Chantry, but at least their verbal spars were less painful than sparring with her physically. Mostly. “And so that’s the point where he can no longer reconcile his duty with morality.” As they’d approached the Vinmark Mountains, Shepard had launched into a long-winded story about some prisoner and the knight pursuing him; insistent on random tangents and introducing far too many side characters, she was still at it what felt like years later. Cullen only listened to pass the time. “So he chucks himself off a bridge,” she concluded with a smile, innocent and entirely unconvincing. “Inspiring anything in you?”

Lessons in Longing: Lesson 4 to Love is to Lose

Updated Chapter for @fenhawke-week Day 2: Reading Lessons | Grief

Excerpt: It is the first time he has visited her bedroom since the night he came to her all aflame and left her alone and cold. Her ember eyes sad beneath her ever-present smile as he slunk away in cowardice.  Fenris creeps up the stairs like an intruder. He is uninvited this time after all. He intrudes regardless. His pulse quick, a sharp pain in his chest. No less than he deserves.  The door is ajar and Dragon lays across the entrance, guarding what he loves. His ears twitch and his eyes roll in Fenris’ direction. His stumpy tail begins a sad thump-thump against the floor.   “Good boy,” Fenris tells him and the Mabari’s tail thumps louder.   Her bedroom is so quiet. It is strange being here without the warm peal of her laughter. The way she lights up every room until all anyone can see, think, feel is Hawke.  There’s the dull echo of people shouting and birds singing their warning calls coming from the Hightown courtyard below. The stench of sewers, and baked goods from the market streaming through the open window. Outside, Kirkwall is as mad and bustling and craven as ever, but inside these walls everything is muffled beneath the veil of Hawke’s grief.  He scans the room for her, expecting to find Hawke nestled in her bed like a creature hibernating for winter. The bed is messy and unmade, but there’s no sign of Hawke.   “Hello? Hawke...” He coughs to clear his throat, suddenly wishing his hands were not empty, and he had at least thought to bring some nice pastries, flowers, a book, a blade, something that might offer her comfort.

The Two Commanders: Remastered — Chapter Eight

Chapter eight, in which Shepard and Cullen find the tiniest bit of common ground once forced to look after a child together.

Shepard had not planned on being burdened with a child after attempting to seduce a templar, and the addition of one made her mission more difficult. Her injured hands also complicated matters. Her manacles were gone now, but her hands were bandaged and — though she refused to show as much to Rutherford — the pain was unbearable, her raw skin itching relentlessly under the cloth. She hoped that meant they were healing after his treatment, although the dark thought he’d given her something to make her hands fall off did briefly cross her mind.  At least she’d gained some standing with him after the night’s events. She’d thought her escape attempt would have lost her talking privileges, but her rescue of him seemed to have turned him— well, not quite mellow, but a fraction less uptight. She figured it was best not to mention she hadn’t known it was him she was saving. In her dazed state she’d seen a helpless figure sprawled on the floor under a menacing creature — a demon, she reminded herself, a bizarre addition to this strange land — and it was only after killing it she’d realised who she’d protected.  She probably would have helped him if she’d known it was him. Probably. It was still useful to have a tour guide. At any rate, Rutherford had warmed to her by at least half a degree — and that could only be a positive, because the evening had shown him to be smarter than she’d believed. She was more annoyed than impressed by how he’d played her at her own game. The fact he had at least two functioning brain cells meant she’d have to put more thought into getting rid of him when the time came, and that meant resorting to her original plan and playing the long con. Maybe she’d have to orchestrate more daring rescues to get on his good side, or start agreeing with him whenever he talked about the importance of his work.  Or maybe she’d just put more effort into seducing him. He hadn’t seemed entirely repulsed by her the first time.
