Teenage Miranda and Oriana
After finishing my last drawing of 16-year-old Miranda rescuing her baby sister, Oriana, I needed to archive and honor her pain in more than an illustration. I dipped back into a bit of realism for them.

Teenage Miranda and Oriana

More Asari baby content, with momma Liara's freckle brows, because I have baby fever rn
I'm a firm Miranda and Shepard shipper, but Liara was my first Mass Effect love, and I've always loved the idea of lots of little blue children
Credit for the asari markings goes to @peachyatelier. Turns out it's genetic

A little analysis on Miranda Lawson‘s childhood:
Miranda tells us those things about her father and her upbringing:
• „He‘s a very influential man, and extremely controlling.“
• „He didn‘t want a daughter - he wanted a dynasty.“
• He is completely egomaniacal, arrogant and only has selfish motives. „How arrogant can you be? The man is completely egomaniacal. Just another reason why I had to get away from him.“ - „But unlike my father and his own selfish reasons, Cerberus and The Illusive Man believe in the greater good.“
• Her father views Miranda and Oriana as mere investments, not human beings. And the only reason why he kept looking for them wasn’t fatherly love but because of what lengths he went to tailor them genetically. „My father invested a great deal in his dynasty. It wasn‘t a matter of just.. leaving. I knew he would continue to pursue his.. investments.“
• Miranda was brought up with no friends and she was pushed to impossible demands. (I was brought up up with no friends, pushed to impossible demands)
• He gave her everything she ever wanted but he always used it against her - even Niket, her childhood friend. Henry knew she cared about him and that she trusted him and he exploited that.
• He had a long term plan for her. It is plain obvious that Miranda couldn‘t have had any say in that. And it has been like this for her entire childhood. (It‘s always been like this. My father gave me everything I ever wanted. But there was always a hook, an angle for his long-term plan.)
• Miranda wasn‘t the first one Henry made, only the first one he kept (I wasn‘t the first one he made, I was only the first one he kept.)
• When Henry became dissatisfied with Miranda he grew Oriana to replace her (My father grew her when I was a teenager. She was meant to replace me.)
• Shots were fired when Miranda escaped
• She didn‘t have a normal life - unlike Oriana
• Her father wanted to turn her into exactly what he wanted - who Miranda wanted to be didn‘t matter
Here are some details, though, that show how awful the situation truly was:
„I ran away as soon as I was old and brave enough.“
That seems to heavily imply that Miranda would‘ve ran away earlier, but it was a matter of not being old and brave enough. If a child wants to run away from an early age.. That‘s a sign of some truly horrible abuse.
„I went to Cerberus because I knew they could protect me.“
Protect her. Protect. Miranda was in actual danger when she was under her father‘s control. We know shots were fired, and that Henry had grown dissatisfied of Miranda- which is why he made Oriana to replace Miranda. It is very likely he would‘ve killed Miranda. Why else would he tell his men to open fire? And as Miranda was officially declared imperfect with the creation of Oriana, she would have been seen as obsolete to Henry. He definitely wouldn‘t have kept her.
I would‘ve said maybe he could have intended to sell her off, but he kidnapped Oriana, murdered her parents, and ordered his men to open fire on Miranda. That seems like the kind of guy to me who just would have killed off his daughter.
There‘s also a line that shows how terribly Henry treated her. Like a mere object, a tool that would never be good enough. A failure.
„I wasn‘t a daughter to him. I was- I don‘t know what I was.“
Miranda is faltering there. And Miranda hardly ever falters. Her tone is also very heart broken, which means a lot from a woman who normally has an ice queen demeanor. And she can‘t even say what she was to Henry— she can‘t find the words to describe it, but she wasn‘t a daughter, she wasn‘t a human with a soul and emotions and own desires and needs to him.
And finally:
„I couldn‘t let my father do to her what he did to me. So I rescued her.“
That line shows how fucked up of a father Henry really was. Miranda is a hardcore efficient woman and she normally would not have rescued an unknown person (!) if it could potentially compromise her goals. And rescuing Oriana, a baby, who cries and thereby draws attention and who is vulnerable and could get hurt or die, is definitely something that could seriously compromise her goal of escaping. But yet Miranda chose to rescue Oriana.
Because she couldn‘t bear the thought of another human being going through what she went through. Her father hurt her so terribly much, that she acted on impulse, emotion, which she normally never does, taking risk to save her baby sister from her abusive father.
She considers taking Ori with her a rescue — that‘s how horrible her father truly is.
He‘s not just some super strict parent who demands straight A‘s and has strict curfew rules and wants her to play piano and take dancing classes and singing classes while doing loads of school work and working on a project for a science contest. Which already sucks. Nope, it is pretty clear he never even once showed any affection towards Miranda. No good night kisses. No hugs. No bedtime stories. No affectionate words. No playing with her. None of that.
Gifts were given, but as a means to control her. Not out of kindness or love.
Nothing was given out of kindness or love.
Dr. Lawson
Gods I love this woman!
Not every fight is easy
Love every single brush stroke of this art.

Wow, it's been a while, huh? I'm still here, starting a new chapter in life, but still in love with Fshawson!
The plot of the Mass Effect series
Breathless and content - just as she so richly deserves.
Gods damn 🥵
anyway now that it's safe to post art on tumblr again here's jack in this fit ;)
That's the same outfit I put her in for this drawing! It fits her so well!
Is not fair that not all squadmates werent romance options for both shepards
Thank gods for mods! I don't know what I'd do without them!
It was a different time when the game was originally released but they definitely should have had everyone available for both Shepard's with the release of the legendary edition
*WIPS*
I swear I'm still here, just have no motivation to finish anything. Please don't judge them too harshly in their current state of half-slopped on color and shading
You have gotten me so hooked on fem!shep/Miranda it’s not even funny! Miranda is such a complex character—imo one of the best in the series. I wish she had better writing in the third game!!
Do you have any particular headcannons or musings you love? 😇😌
Glad to have another FemShawson lover in our little fandom!
The "Miranda mod" for the 3rd game helps bring her in. Fully voiced for about half a dozen missions, including the Citadel DLC and endgame. I consider that to be close to my head cannon true ending (plus the happy ending mod)
I have many other head cannons for Miranda and Shep -- a full AU for post-war.
I know a lot of people head cannon Miranda continuing her father's and The Illusive Man's work in an ethical way post-war but not me. For me, I play full paragon and my Shep settles down after the war due to injuries and PTSD. Miranda and Oriana join. Oriana focuses on college classes. Miri goes a bit stir crazy in the beginning due to having freedom to choose for the first time. It isn't until she joins Shep for one of her art therapy classes that she truly feels something for the first time in a long time. No rules. No right way. No wrong way. No one telling her exactly what to do. Just her being her true self for the first time ever.
So that's the long way of saying I headcannon Miranda becoming a small artist post-war. Very obscure, I'm aware haha! I just like the idea of her doing something that makes her happy and gives her freedom
I love hearing others headcannons though! Bless me with more!
