I like it in here.
Iron Lung and Project Hail Mary as "men who persevere against impossible odds and find courage in the depths of despair"
Versus Obsession and Backrooms "men will willingly stay in a literal horror movie situation over confronting their mistakes and taking responsibility for their actions"
If Backrooms was a children’s book
went to see Backrooms, came back home, opened Tumblr to see discussions of the movie and saw people calling the movie racist because the controversial character/"villain" of the movie happens to be a black man.
Now I personally don't share this opinion at all: Clark's race and ethnicity doesn't have an impact on the story at all and NOT ONCE during the movie I thought "oh he's an asshole, egoistic, abuser of a man because he is black and all black people are evil", he's evil because he's a asshole, egoistic abuser person that HAPPENS to be black, that's it. I would've hated him even if he was white, asian or a fucking unicorn. Calling the movie or the director racist and bashing his work online doesn't make sense and it's such reach to the point where it's embarrassing in my opinion.
I hated his character because he put innocents in danger for his own egoistical reasons, because it's heavily implied that he was a violent man that used to hit his wife and because he refused to change till the end. His skin color literally doesn't have ANYTHING to do with it.
Honestly, it feels like a lose-lose situation where people would have complained no matter which character was cast as black:
-If Bobby were black, people would complain that the black character dies first.
-If Kat or Mary were black, people would complain that a black woman was put in danger because she followed white characters/didn't convince the main character to change and not be evil (essentially giving her the fault of the whole ordeal).
-If there were no black characters, people would complain about a total lack of representation (which would actually be a valid critique).
I'm interested to know other people's opinion on this topic
(posted this on reddit too, click to see the discussions on the other app, many interesting opinions are being shared!)
Kane Pixels: “the backrooms are about memory and cycles of remembering things. Your lived experiences and trauma shape how the backrooms and entities form. Everything that shapes you as a person will be reflected and distorted by the backrooms. Clark and Mary’s past are deeply connected to what they experience in the backrooms.”
Random internet person: “I didn’t like Clark or Mary. Their back stories and trauma went nowhere.”
