 for @agustinmeanswell !
Pepa is, in some ways, a wholly different person than she was when she met AgustĂn. But there are some aspects of her personality that have never changed. Like the innate desire to tease a brother, whether he be her blood or not.
âAgustĂn,â she says, a smug look on her face so similar to Camiloâs that itâs jarring, âyou should watch your head.â She would almost sound serious, if not for the wavering, childish lilt in her voice.
Beyond a few initial teasing issues (read: debates over his worthiness for her sister) AgustĂn has always, in his opinion, gotten on rather well with Pepa. Sheâs become like the sister he never had, and itâs probably a good thing he never did have one because his mother would have likely gone daft with more than just him.
Time might have changed a lot of things, but alas, not quite his naivety, and he doesnât even consider that turning his head while swinging open the cabinet door might not be a good idea until the door knob collides with his forehead. He groans.
âPepaaaaa,â he whines playfully, rubbing his forehead, fixing her with a pout.
agustinmeanswellâ:
âTeenagers,â AgustĂn snorted, shaking his head. To be fair, when heâd been that age he likely would have done similar if heâd had the ability, so he canât actually blame Camilo, but still. In la casa Madrigal, they all shared the load when it came to the housework, âWell Luisa is still down in the village, unless Camilo has also developed the ability to lift the church.â
âSo we just need to figure out where he went, then.â And whether he was stil leven Louisa, or one of the other Madrigals. ActuallyâŠ
âHow do I know you are not Camilo?â
âBecause I havenât eaten half the contents of the kitchen while weâve been talking?â the tall man suggested. It was a reasonable question after all, and one that was probably stated far more times than anyone would think, but when you had a family member as mischievous as Camilo? You got used to it, âAlso I stubbed my toe four times just coming down the stairs.â
AFTER THE STORM
Starters for when something happened and you have to take care of them. Trigger warnings apply for Injury, Blood (mention), Death, and general Angst.Â
THE SOFT
âIâve got you. Donât worry, Iâll keep you safe now.âÂ
âJust lie still. Youâre in no condition to be up and about just yet.â
âDonât be silly! Itâs no problem at all. Someone has to take care of you.â
âDrink this; itâll make you feel a little better.â
âYou had me worried for a moment there.â
âI told you Iâve got your back, didnât I? I meant it, you know.âÂ
âHeyâŠhey, itâs okay. Iâll not let anything happen to you.â
âYou just need a little time to recover. Until then, Iâll handle everything.â
âRest up, and Iâll be right here when you wake up again later.â
âIâm sorry if that hurt you. I have to clean the wound.â
âListen to me, will you? This. Was not. Your fault.â
âYou didnât deserve for any of this to happen to you.â
âI will never let you suffer like this again, I promise.â
âItâs okayâŠitâs okayâŠIâm right here. Iâm not going anywhere.â
âYou are so, so important to me, and the thought of losing youâŠâ
âDoes it hurt terribly? Iâm so sorry. Is there anything I can do to soothe it?â
âDo you feel like trying to eat anything yet? I can make some soup if youâd like?â
âJust keep your feet up and let me do all of the work for once.â
âDoâŠdo you want to be alone for a while?â
âWould it be alright if I hugged you? Would that make you feel safer?â
âWe will get through this. We will get through it together.â
THE SHATTERING
âOhâŠ! Hey! Hey, come onâŠkeep your eyes open for me, come onâŠâ
âPlease donât do this to me! Please, please stay with meâŠâ
âMy GodâŠwhat on earth have they done to you?â
âNoâŠ! No, no, no!! This canâtâŠthis canât be happeningâŠ!â
âWeâll be home soon, weâll be safe and â hey, hey!! No, come on, donât do thisâŠâ
âMan, that was a fight, huh? I canât wait to tell everyone how we â NAME? Oh no! No, please! NAME!!! Câmon, you canât give up like that, you canâtâŠâ
âWhatâs the matter? Why are you so pale? WhereâŠwhereâs NAME?â
âNAME, whatâŠwhat did you do?â
âBreathe! Come on, pleaseâŠplease, just breathe!âÂ
âThis isnât how itâs meant to end. Itâs meant to be you and me, weâre meant to win!â
âWhat do you mean? Youâ you canât blame yourself for this!â
âOh God, oh â thatâs a lot of blood. Jesus, thatâs a lot of blood.â
âWhere does it hurt? Where â oh no. ThatâŠthat looks bad.â
âI thought you said it was only a scratch?!â
âWe have to go! We canât go back for them, we have to get out of here!â
âI will not let you fall too! You canât help them now, we have to run!â
âIâŠIâm so sorry that I failed you. I failed to keep you safe.â
âTheyâŠthey turned me into a monster.â
âIâŠIâm sorry! I didnât mean toâŠIâŠI didnât mean for any of this to happen!â
agustinmeanswellâ:
âCamilo? Not since breakfast, no,â AgustĂn mused, casting his mind back over the morning. Breakfast, then heâd gone for a walk through the townâŠthen heâd come back to lunch, said hello to Luisa, walked back into town andâŠ.seen Luisa again, âActually, now that you mention itâŠI seem to remember seeing Luisa twice.â
âHmm.. .so he turned into Luisa to avoid his chores.â Now the bigger problem was finding âherâ, and then getting âherâ to admit that it was actually Camilo. â AgustĂn, help me find him. Heâs been avoiding his responsibilities by turning into someone else all week, itâs driving me loco.â
âTeenagers,â AgustĂn snorted, shaking his head. To be fair, when heâd been that age he likely would have done similar if heâd had the ability, so he canât actually blame Camilo, but still. In la casa Madrigal, they all shared the load when it came to the housework, âWell Luisa is still down in the village, unless Camilo has also developed the ability to lift the church.â
agustinmeanswellâ / PapĂ
Sometimes AgustĂn wondered where the time had went. How had his children grown up so fast? It seemed like only yesterday that Luisa had been a tiny little tyke that he would bounce on his knee and pull funny faces with. Now she was a grown woman near enough, so incredibly capable and always taking on so much to ease the lives of those around her. Too much, he sometimes felt. It had been his concern from the start, even with Isabela and Dolores, that insisting that the children help the town every day was too much, but especially with Luisa. She had always been so eager to please.
Hearing her words now breaks his heart, and he wishes he had put his foot down all those years ago, insisted that she wouldnât be taking on so much, that she was only a child for crying out loud. But he couldnât change the past. Instead he reached out, taking one of her hands in his, the other going to cup her cheek lightly.
âOh, mi vida, you could never be worthless, do you understand me? And how much you do or donât do would ever make you that. You have so, so much worth. I am so proud of you Luisa, of the young woman you have grown up to be, of how sweet and gentle and kind you are, and even if you didnât lift a finger, you would still be so loving and gentle. And admitting you need to take on less? Oh, mija, that doesnât make you weak, that makes you stronger than you could ever believe.â
The gentle âMi vidaâ from her father was all it took for tears to fall down her cheeks. Her lips quivered as she looked back up at her father, listening to the words he spoke. â PapĂâŠÂ â  The nineteen year old took a step forward before wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug. She let out a huff. â What will people think? If I stopped helping⊠If I canât HELP the people, what use do I have? â  She continued to admit her insecurities to her father, but as she spoke more about her thoughts, the less panicked she felt.Â
Despite her fatherâs protests, Luisa still felt as if she was weak and worthless if she could not be of service. But how much could she put the PRESSURE over her own joy.  â I donât know where to go from here. I donât know where to begin to take on less. â  The past few years sheâs been picking up as much weight as they can, doing as many chores, starting as soon as she can. She never even gave herself the time to take a naps. In fact, the last time she took a nap was before her gift ceremony. She knew she couldnât keep going at full force. But the girl didnât even know where to begin with pulling back. â There is so much expected of meâŠâ
It had been quite some time since heâd seen Luisa cry, and the sight broke his heart. Oh how he wished he could just snap his fingers and make everything better, take away all the pressure, make everything better for her so she wouldnât feel like this. He was papa, he was meant to be able to fix things for her. As it was he wrapped his arms tightly around her in return. No nineteen year old should feel like theyâre useless just for not taking on the weight of the world.
âStuff what they think,â he said softly, raising his hand to gently wipe the tears from her cheeks and tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear, âLuisa Madrigal, your use and your worth will never depend on you burning yourself out for others. You have been taking on everything since you were five years old, mija, you do not owe anyone anything.â Giving her a squeeze, he pressed a kiss to her forehead, âHow about this? The donkeys? Not your problem, and if he kept a closer eye on them and fixed his fence, they wouldnât get out so much. And no more rerouting rivers. Thereâs no need.â
@agustinmeanswellâ liked!
âAgustin. Iâm afraid Julieta isnât here.â Pepa gave her brother-in-law a friendly smile, placing several dusty pots in the sink before preparing the soap and water, âShe went to the market to buy some ingredients and wonât be back until half an hour. Are you thirsty? Would you like a glass of water?â
âYes, I caught her on the way out,â AgustĂn smiled, scratching the back of his neck. More accurately speaking, he had been making his way back up the path and sheâd shoved an arepa in his mouth without even stopping, and the bee stings had since alleviated. She knew him too well, âWater would be wonderful, thanks Pepa. How are things today?â
â come here. iâll fix it. â (Tio Agustin to the rescue!)
"It's okay, tio. It's alright," Dolores protests, though the expression on her face betrays her discomfort. The fireworks were loud, but it was in celebration of Antonio's gift! She wouldn't take the attention from him tonight.
AgustĂn doesnât need any sort of special gift to notice how uncomfortable Dolores is. In truth, he doesnât quite understand why thereâs always so much insistence on fireworks around a house where one of the members can hear someoneâs eye twitching across the house. Digging his hands into his pockets, he retrieved a few scraps of thick fabric from where heâd been experimenting earlier on. It wasnât much, but he bundled them up, gently offering them to cover her ears with.
đ / PAPĂ:
âIt took me a little while and quite a bit of practicing,â he smiled, giving her a gentle squeeze when she copied the little tune. It was still a little discordant, still a little lacking in rhythm but for her first try, it was very good if he did say so himself. His precious girl picked up on things so quickly.
âIf youâd like, mi vida, we could practice together.â
đž â Mirabel had always loved spending time with her dad. Sheâs been called a daddyâs girl by her family. And you canât blame her. She gets a lot of her goofy and silly traits from her father, a lot of her passions are from him. So of course when he offers to teach her, she looks back up at him with stars in her eyes.
đž â âReally!?â she squeaks. âIâm gonna be the best piano player! With the very best teacher!â
Isabela and Luisa were both that little bit older now, beginning to assert their independence and not quite so clingy to their old papa anymore, or at least not as frequently. Mirabel, however, to AgustĂnâs delight, was still more than happy to spend time snuggled up together, and he cherished every moment.
And when she looks up at him like that? Oh, heâd take on the world for her.
âI know you will,â he smiles, and he canât resist the urge to give her a bigger hug now, a soft laugh echoing from his lips, âBut I gotta get paid in cuddles!â
@agustinmeanswellâ said:Â Â â Â you deserve to be happy. Â â (for Isabela)
â PapĂĄâŠyou donât have to worry about me anymore. I am happyâ& this time, I want to be true to myselfâŠto everyone.  â She was more than grateful that her father was beginning to realize the roots that ran deep within her, the perfect facade she created for herself for so long. She had never felt this relieved before, so free & liberated from everyone & everything. Hands holding his, she gave him a wide smile, nodding at him before pulling him into a hug.
â GraciasâŠthis meansâŠso much to me.  â
âIâm your papa, Iâm always going to worry,â AgustĂn said softly with a gentle look, giving her hands a squeeze. How had he not realised that sheâd been unhappy? The thought that sheâd felt that way, that sheâd hidden it and not felt able to come to him broke his heart, and he would do whatever he could to make sure she never felt like that again. His arms wrapped around her tightly, and he pressed a kiss to her temple.
âI am so, so sorry, mi princesa....Iâm so sorry I didnât see...â
@agustinmeanswellâ has liked here for a starter.
âWhatâs wrong, tĂo? Did my friends bother you again?â Antonio asked his uncle with a genuinely kind and concerned tone, looking up to his uncle.
AgustĂn liked animals, he really did. And mostly, they seemed to like him well enough (save for the bees). However, combined with his own accident prone nature, it did sometimes prove a little disastrous. Still, the concern in his youngest sobrinoâs voice made him smile, and he gave Antonio a gentle pat on the shoulder, âNo, no, mijo, itâs just your tĂo being clumsy again.â
@agustinmeanswellâ liked for a starter!
âAgustĂn, have you seen Camilo? Heâs been avoiding his chores again, pretending to be other people.â
âCamilo? Not since breakfast, no,â AgustĂn mused, casting his mind back over the morning. Breakfast, then heâd gone for a walk through the town...then heâd come back to lunch, said hello to Luisa, walked back into town and....seen Luisa again, âActually, now that you mention it...I seem to remember seeing Luisa twice.â

i'm a sucker for that scene where one person is injured and alone and ends up knocking on another person's door in their hour of need, and i'm an even bigger sucker for the tending to the injuries and the quiet emotional content that follows, and i'm here to make it everyone else's problem! as always, to reverse the actions, just add "+ REVERSE" to the end!
from the injured.
" i didn't know where else to go... "
" whatever you've been told about me, whatever you've heard or seen or listened to... none of it's true. "

" i'm sorry... i know this isn't what you signed up for. "
" you're the only one i can trust. "
" do you believe what they're saying about me? "
" aren't you going to say i told you so? "
" i am grateful, you know. for everything you've ever done for me... i notice. and i see you. and i've never thanked you properly before, so... thank you. "
