the "saint kim" thing is like. i know it's textual i know they put a halo on his icon and harry has a distorted view of him. but i do feel a little cagey seeing it happily repeated in memes and fanworks all the time, considering - AND I FUCKING LOVE KIM!! -
but considering that he does embody the rcm's cop fraternity culture, does bully civilians, does approach the communist reading group with a hand on his gun, does tamp down on most challenges to the status quo, and does have a limit to his (deep) reserves of patience, compassion and good judgment... can we leave the deification & dehumanization of kim up to harry? it's cool when he does it. it's his métier. he's got the disposition and the skills
People forget that the halo reflects Harry's view of Kim, not How Kim Is In Fact, and that actually Harry is an unstable mess and that his pov is unreliable. The idea that Kim is a saint and in love with Harry and willing to jump in and protect him from everything is what Harry wants to believe (or maybe he does believe it), but as soon as Kim saw Jean he Noped the hell out of that conversation, and he doesn't interfere in the p41 tribunal either other than to correct some facts. He isn't stupid, he has a pretty good idea of what's going on. Depictions that simplify their dynamic into "Kim will always defend poor Harry from Jean the big bad meanie" do all three of those characters a disservice

I'm new-ish to the Disco Elysium fandom, which has brought me back to Tumblr, and so I haven't read a lot of canon analysis of Dora and Harry. Me writing this is trying to understand canon and my own headcanon about Dora and Harry, along with follow up questions... Basically, I'm talking to myself, but I don't mind a sounding board.
Some information I have to verify in-game: Dora and Harry got together while he was a PE teacher. She encouraged him to have a more respectable job in detective work with the RCM, which he was very good at but became extremely stressed out as a result.
What I'm pretty sure we do know: Around this time, he became more of a mess, or at least, he was always prone to being a mess. The detective work triggered his addictions, and she could not handle his mental state. As the years pass like this, he was bad to her, and she was bad for him. This scenario reminds me of once upon a time in my own partnership in which I was prioritizing my work over my relationship, and I remember the strain it's had on us a couple, which obviously means something has gotta give--in my case, we were able to find a balance together because we talked it out and made boundaries. Clearly, Dora and Harry did not do this. If their issues had gotten that serious, I wonder whether Dora would have given him an ultimatum to leave the job or stay with her; since the Harry we meet in the game is obviously with the RCM, this ultimatum was never posed to him, or at least it did not seem like a big enough factor for it to come up in the ending dream sequence.
Questions that arise: Would Dora and Harry have been able to work out their relationship had he left the RCM (as part of an ultimatum situation)? If he was given this option, I don't believe he would take it, but why?
Possible answers to the latter question: 1) Harry is damn good at detective work, and he probably finds pride in things he could do (for his self-worth, because he likely has always had a low self-esteem); 2) Harry clearly has a sense of justice in wanting to support the community. Examples - He started off as a teacher, he listens to what Shivers has to say, he cares about kids, and he eventually is a communist (pre-game) because of these very ideals; and my final reason being a little more headcanony, 3) Harry wants to have a career that is "respected" (which I believe is Dora's initial reason for him having the job -- again, needs to be confirmed alongside the info I need to verify above). But detective work is a poor job, regardless, so I'm not sure why she would want that for him in the first place. Being in the RCM means having pay cuts, doing the job for the passion of it, for the good of it, and literally pushing his relationships and health away.
Headcanon thoughts: To me, it's also worth noting that returning to becoming a teacher would put Harry with Dora, rather than Harry with Jean or Kim (both of whom came *after* her -- Harry wouldn't have even met the partners that we associate with him had he gone back to teaching). Noteworthy because in my mind that means a Harry who chooses detective work is one that values himself, not just his identity within a relationship. Despite the toxic feelings Harry lingers on Dora, he is still ultimately choosing himself. In fact, having a partnership in the RCM is still healthier than the one he had with Dora because then he at least brings value as a good detective and his partners (Jean and Kim) respect his voice.
This brings me to Dora: I do not wanna villainize her here, either. I am still working out whether she respected his voice.
On the side of "no": I can't help but think of her upbringing (she likely did not have as much class consciousness [I relate to Harry here with a partner like this, and you would have to have patience to educate someone so close to you about this sort of thing]), the end result of their relationship (they did not fit romantically, so she left him), and her not giving Harry a clean boundary (she answers the phone call and listens to him speak, for example).
On the side of "yes": it could be that their relationship *developed* into that codependency; if Harry were to stay as a teacher, they might have had a healthier relationship, and likely, a healthier split.
Back to answering my former question: I still think they would have split up regardless of whether Harry would have left the RCM. There's something in the way that dream-Harry was lingering on his lost daughters that made the relationship already so broken. Also, he was born to detect, so well. He would have found his way to the RCM eventually, imo :)
All this postulating is to wonder: What does this mean for Harry in my fluffy AU-as-a-PE-teacher fic? lol
(also wow, I don't think I've written something like this on here since schooling)
I’ve actually been a fan of Ryoko Kui for over ten years and own all her manga :)
Rereading Dungeon Meshi after a while made me want to doodle, so here’s a silly sketch.
I kind of feel like the DE and Dungeon Meshi fandoms overlap a bit, so I was really happy to learn she likes Disco Elysium in a couple of Japanese interviews.
Ok I swear it’s the last time I’m posting these today but I realized it’s a nice opportunity for me to compare side by side my first disco elysium art from almost half a year ago which was for the most part closely imitating a reference photo I took of my game directly and made on the ipad vs. how i stylize very similar rear view compositions from memory now made on my phone in a moving vehicle
I love the fact that he’s a man who knows how to sew a lapel and center a back vent, and that he chooses to wear a bomber jacket and cargo pants that fit him perfectly on duty.
was anybody going to tell me the two princes podcast is a heartwarming sweet story with gay main characters and strong independent women and a lot of both funny and emotional moments or was i just supposed to stumble upon it by accident on spotify
