thinking about the “are you going non verbal?” question one of mack’s bu friends asked him when he started shutting down because apparently that’s what he does when he’s having a hard time

so i just came back to this vid of wm when will noticed mack was clearly annoyed and didn’t want to talk, but instead of forcing a conversation or backing off completely, he just watched him and waited, giving him the time and space he needed, but still got the answer in the end

and i feel like it pretty much sums up their whole dynamic

I really like where this anon was going because it's something I've been thinking about when looking at how fast Will and Macklin basically imprinted on each other.

In my brain, Will isn't necessarily a shy person - he's someone who needs to feel comfort to be himself and relax. As long as he has someone with him who he truly, fully trusts to have his back, he opens up to be his fun, silly and whimsical self. The thing is, before SJ, Will hasn't ever had only one "comfort" person. He's always had his family, and Voter/Leno/elementary friends who we don't know at childhood. Then Gabe comes along with the other trauma boys from the USNTDP who follow him to BC. His neediness is spread across many people because he built this congregation of "comfort" people (aka his Day 1s), so he can always feel safe, and thus be himself. Then he goes to San Jose and there's no safety net - there isn't even a net.

That's where Macklin comes in. Here's this guy who has always attached himself to one person everywhere he goes, making them his favorite person because he needs someone to be his like Will, but not in the same way or for the same reason. Macklin knows himself, knows he may not be everyone's favorite and wants that one person who chooses him above all else. However, he's also always known that his favorite person won't last because he's going to leave Shattuck in a year, Steel in a year, BU in a year. Each of those attachments is fleeting. The longest one is his ex-girlfriend, but that even ended before SJ.

So when boy who needs to find a comfort person meets boy who needs to find a favorite person meet because of their favorite thing - hockey - and recognize they can be what the other person needs? I think that's when they decided on each other. And the fact that there really weren't any other people who Will could spread out to on a regular basis while Macklin's never needed more than one person - I think that just led to a quicker codependency development that has just continued to today. Even though their circles are larger now, they still choose each other because they know no one else will choose them like they will each other.

And that's my dissertation on how Will's shyness and Mack's awkwardness led them to where they are now. Not exactly what it was supposed to end up at but i wrote so much already so just going to leave it as is.

ah thank you!! i just think it’s perfect for will, who carries the corpses of every person, place and thing that he has ever loved deep within him. he is never ever ever letting go of one single solitary beloved. and because of that, the ones he loves can also never fully let go of him — not leno, left behind at bc; not voter, destined to forever be will’s faithful companion; and not mack, even when he’s all the way in switzerland or vancouver or wherever it is that he goes without will. they’ll never let go — they’ll never move on — in a very real way, they’ll never change from the version of themselves that will loves so fiercely. and what is that if not a sort of death?

okay, I have a take and I would love to know what other people think because this is something I’ve been thinking for a while now and haven’t seen anyone else talk about.

The take: The rivalry between Mack and Will during college was not as one-sided as Will would like us to believe

Look, I can absolutely get behind Mack being the more intense one about it and taking the entire thing very personal. I totally see that.

But I just don’t buy the entire Will didn’t gaf story. I simply don’t. Because it kinda feels like the entire premise of that runs on Will’s word and while I love the guy, to me this also sounds like something he would gatekeep (familiar territory, anyone?) because it doesn’t fit with the image he wants to portray (no judgement)

Like, you’re telling me Will Smith Hockey didn’t care at all that Mack robbed him of his one chance at the Beanpot? It didn’t matter to him that Mack won the Hobey Baker and he himself wasn’t even a top finalist despite leading the NCAA in scoring? The guy is competitive to the core. And he cares! Soo much.

But this doesn’t matter? At all?!

Maybe it’s because I’m looking at this in retrospective. Maybe it’s that I’m considering the fact that Will and Mack are very different people and it so stands to reason that how each would act about their rivalry could vastly differ from the other. Maybe I’m totally off.

But to me Will is a fake idgaf-er (said with love) and I find that fascinating.

i kind of agree with what you are saying. it's obviously impossible that will didn't acknowledge mack during his college year at all. by his own admission (i wish i could be able to find the interview where he said this but i don't have the will to do the research right now im sorry) he said that he obviously keep an eye open with all that was happening with BU during that year. but publicly he put it in a way where he was acknowledging the hockey team rivalry, not his personal interest in what a specific bu star was doing in the tournament.

so what I think is that yes, he was really into the next generational star player that is playing against my team of it all, even just from an hockey perspective he would simply be. he is a hockey nerd there's no way he wouldn't be curious about the new canadian sensation.

(and curiosity killed the cat cause look at him sharing his first ten minutes on the same ice with said guy and becoming completely obsessed with him)

now, what i noticed is that while mack was really vocal during their rookie year about his beef (honestly, that wasn't even a beef, he was simply too starstruck by will to understand he didn't really hate the guy if anything he was really attracted to him even just in a hockey way) with will smith, will on the contrary was (and still is) very vocal about his relationship with mack right now. while mack loooved to tell people how he loathe the golden boy that lit them up and was never able to shut up about it (smiling every time people hinted at will), will loooves when people ask and tell him how his relationship with mack his special, how he his the person that know him the most, how he gets the good and the bad of the superstar in and outside the rink (he is so fucking smug about it). and even if he doesn't say much his body language and eyes talk for him.

it's like mack feels safe while talking about his relationship with will when hockey is involved, while will can't hide the fondness in where he is completely drowning while talking about this intense guy.

we always say that mack wears his heart on his sleeve but i also think that will too have this problem while someone asks him about people he really cares about. he can't hide that he cares, not in the way he can play nonchalant when there isn't an emotional attachment.

I know we always talk about will encouraging mack to have more sweet treats once they were teammates, which is lovely and great. however! usntdp will also had such a restrictive diet. it is important to me that both will and mack can be have fun and help each other be a little more relaxed. yes, will is mack’s release (enter smith, 20) but I think mack serves a very similar role for will as well.
