something that’s been bugging me, genuinely curious if there’s a consensus here

rocky’s double-tap ‘question’ indicator is:

how interrogatives work in normal adult eridian speech

the actual eridian word for ‘question’ and rocky just tacks it on for clarity

something he and grace made up because the translator can’t do tone of voice

technically real eridian grammar but it’s the equivalent of baby talk

i will say i think the biggest potential point toward it NOT being a standard eridian speech pattern in the movie is the fact that rocky doesn't use it sometimes, the most notable being when grace confirms he's going to die. "why didn't you tell me?" has no question indicator. you could argue it's a storytelling choice, maybe to keep the flow of a relatively serious conversation, but he doesn't even do the double tap, which could have been left in pretty unobtrusively

the other instance that comes to mind is when he's explaining the 'fishing' plan to what he thinks is a live feed to earth. and honestly that one's even more interesting, because while the 'question?' text-to-speech is missing, he DOES do a double tap, *after* he doesn't get an answer. it's translated as 'hello???'

possibly even more unpopular read that i’m 100% certain about: eridians ending sentences with ‘statement’ is absolutely not a thing at all. the only time rocky does that in the entire movie is a callback to when grace said it during the fishing trip

Ryland Grace hits a really excellent aro/ace headcanon sweet spot for me where like. He's a middle school teacher in San Francisco, he almost knows asexuality and aromanticism exist as labels. But he also strikes me as the kind of guy who never quite got to the point of introspection to go "And that's what's going on with me, specifically," at least not when he was still on Earth.

Anyway I think about two years into the journey to Erid he realizes this about himself while talking to an alien rock.

i don’t know how many people on tumblr know about “verticals” - they’re cheaply made soap operas that are filmed vertically so you can watch them on your phone. they’re infamous in the acting world because of the poor writing and nonsensical plots - almost always has something to do with a mafia boss or a vampire or a werewolf - and they always have insane titles like “pregnant with the ceo’s baby” or “forced to marry the alpha king.” i come across tons of them on casting websites and they all have wild titles and descriptions but none of them, None of Them, have truly grabbed me like the title i saw today:

answering some questions i’ve seen:

1. yes, real people work on these

2. some of the scripts might be ai generated but a lot of them are poorly translated in to english from other languages (china and russia are really big in to verticals) or just written in like an afternoon by someone with no will to live

3. shockingly you get paid really well for these, like way more than nonunion standard, which is why a lot of actors flock to them

4. they’re typically hosted on tiktok or apps specifically designed for hosting verticals

5. as far as i am aware, dr. fangs does not prescribe mouse bites
